Thanks everyone, just attacked them with white vinegar, no fizzing happened at all, so i guess thats pretty conclusive! :happy2: so just a scrub in some warm water with a coarse-ish brush?
-
well at the moment Im having a low pH problem - not incredibly low, my LFS says its all over town - must be the main supply, im just doing regular water changes but the fish dont seem to mind. Current fish are 2x angels 1x clown loach 5x odessas 4x tiger barbs 1x swordtail 1x bristlenose pleco (hopeless at cleaning - he must think hes still on holiday 8) ) plans are to increase the number of odessas, tigers and clown loaches, and eventually get into saltwater, when im allowed

Google backs you up - Limestone will Fizz when vinegar is added or applied. What does that mean though? is limestone bad? Can the vinegar have any affect on the aquarium? Cheers!

Hello All, yesterday I went to the beach and found some rocks that I think will look pretty cool in my tank, my question is, are they all safe? Do certain types of rock have chemicals that leech out of them over time? Do they need to be cured etc? I can post pics up shortly, or just given a hot water scrub? Thanks!

Great thanks everyone I went on the hunt for a plastic rod today, but was unable to find anything suitable except someone did suggest to contact a plastic welder and see if the rods they use are what I am looking for. but I will probably just find a piece of glass and glue it up, ill let you know how I get on! any tips for siliconing it to the glass? eg shave it flat first or leave it slightly off, and use alot of silicone? Thanks! -

the main base isnt quite flat on the bottom, but I dont think that even if it was that it would quite be enought to make it balance. Can you just silicone the glass to the base? Or is there a special trick to make the bond strong? It is a storebought piece of wood, and it will be extremely hard, I drilled two holes in my last piece to attatch a plant to it and it took a lot of drilling! haha! Thanks! -

Thank you! I will begin rock hunting again.. Is there any reason why the metal idea isnt popular? Can metal be used safely in a aquarium? How about a plastic garden stake, approx 8-10mm, that you can get from bunnings etc, the ones that are designed to help vines etc grow? That would be safe wouldnt it? EDIT - like these ones! except fully plastic not metal tube. http://www.housecharm.co.uk/items/11-5024160079008/Gardman-Garden-Stake--Green.html :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: -

the tanks going to be a little big for that unfortunately! - The tank is a UFO880 and I want this sitting towards the front... Thanks though! -
Hello! Today I found the piece of wood I want for my new tank, but it has a balancing issue.... - it doesnt stand up unless supported by something, (at the moment my food container ) What I thought about was drilling a deepish hole upwards from the base and then putting in a "L" shaped piece of metal, the shorter leg of the "L" into the driftwood and the larger end can be turned around to support the wood in the most conveniant direction. My question is, is this a good idea? What kind of metals can be used in a tropical tank? has anyone else had this problem and come up with another way? I thought about a glass plate at the bottom too but the L seemed more user friendly and easy to install... Thanks in advance!! Thanks :bounce:

cool, thanks! i was only thinking of getting him some lady friends as i was told by my LFS they are supposed to be paired up 1m to 2f? is this not the case? Cheers On another thought, im going to the lake today, are rocks etc safe from the Rotoma lake? or any lake? or any special things that need to be done other than a good clean to make them safe for my tank? Cheers!

Howdy all! Im after some ideas regarding tank layouts and stocking ideas for a communal corner tank - 305L, (UFO880), currently I have: 2x Angels 5x Odessa Barbs 4x Tiger Barbs 1x Bristlenose Pleco 1x Clown Loach 1x Swordtail. My plan was just to increase the numbers of odessas, tigers, and loaches, and give my swordtail some lady friends, however im wondering what everyone else thinks also I have a smallish piece of driftwood (approx 30cm long) which looks perfect in my AR620T, but its going to look very small in the new tank.. so im thinking either a large feature piece of driftwood with plants on the wood & around it, or a rock / wood theme reusing the wood I currently have. Does anyone have a setup similar to this? or a similar themed tank? Id be interested to see pics as I cant find many via google or other fish websites, Thanks alot in advance

Wow only ten bucks! they are $20.20 from my LFS, we will see how the tank pans out, im thinking approx 15 tiger barbs, 15 odessas, 10-15 Clown Loaches, my Pleco (and maybe a Queen Arabesque too) my two angels, and a couple of swordtails, to give my lone male swordtail some ladyfriends  haha
-
Thanks Guys, just waiting for my new tank now, cant wait! :happy2: :happy2:
-
cool, what would you suggest? i like my barbs...
-
Lol, I forgot about that. I might have to restrict her to one...

haha I agree, im getting a UFO880, so far I have : 2 Angels, 4 or 5 Tiger Barbs 6 or so Odessa Barbs 1 Bristlenose Pleco 1 Clown Loach 1 Male Swordtail how many more fish could I put in a UFO880? My partner decided that the condition that I get this tank is that she is allowed 2 silver sharks, Bala sharks I believe? so there will be two f them too, looking for stocking and planting ideas, etc.. probably another subject though.. Anyone selling loaches cheap?
-
Hello, I have a clown loach and have had him for a good 6 months now, hes doing ok but im getting a bigger tank (330L) and I know he is supposed to have a few more than just the one, any reccommendations? will new baby clown loaches be ok or should I be hunting for some bigger ones to match? roughly how many is a good sized group? Thanks Shey

lol, first time ive ever put a tank together, so thought i was being nice, used not tooo much, and turns out i used ALOT, how long should I leave it before i start trimming off the excess? Cheers
-
Hey there, I have just reconstructed my old tank, there is silicon for africa, inside and out, the outside stuff I know I can just scrape off with a sharp stanley blade, the internal silicon is what im being slightly more cautious about... how do i go about cleaning off the excess silicon inside, without stuffing the seal I have just made? How do i make the bead inside super tidy and professional looking? Any help or suggestions would be greatly apprecciated. Also what can I safely clean up the outside with? obviousally I scrape off the excess with a blade, but what about small smudges, smears, etc, is there some liquid (similar to turps or meths or something) thats safe enough to use? Cheers for any help

Subject: WARNING DON'T TRUST YOUR WATER Heya, ive done a bit of research but havnt managed to contact council, on the internet it seems to think that im on town supply, so my test must have been a dud, also it seems odd that more people havnt had a huge cry if the test was accurate, as far as geothermal activity is concerned all of Rotorua is aparantly riddled with it, and i know some parts of rotorua are heated (including their water) by geothermal activity, but im on the other side of town from them, the opposite side of most of the geothermal activity.. im not sure how sulphur and other stuff might affect water but i guess its possible? I wonder if its more something in the tap lines at my house - one tap is fine, the other is not? im not too overly worried about it any more as ive decided im just going to use the main tap in the kitchen and ignore the one in the garage

hmmmm ok, thats a bummer, most of the glass ive got will only equate to just under 200L tank maybe the discus will have to wait. Thanks for the info!
