One tip is to mix & match species & colourss, less agression. & as stated earlier try & go for all males.{more colour} There is a cichlid part on this forum, you could post in that section. A colony of electric yellows, demasoni, M.estherae{red zeb, pulu point}, M.Barlowi & Maingano too, would look good. Whatever colony you go for, I wouldn't make it any bigger than 4, otherwise overcrowding & fighting, as in males fighting over territories, will be a big problem. And somewhere quiet for the females to hide could be a problem too. Just have to be careful, I have found victorians can be a bugger to keep with mbunas. Well its really up to the males of whatever species as to how they all get along. Do a google search on malwai cichlids, look through some galleries. If you see anything you like, put their names up. I will let you know what is around, if I think they will work.....Brad i am sure will add his 2 cents too. I am sure the lfs you deal with, would deal with a couple of particular types of wholesalers. Excuse me Brad, 8) would that be haven't not have? What you said makes sense. I wouldn't be moving fish either & to help produce slime coat you only need a little salt & there are plenty of products that help in slime coat production, check any of the good chlorine neutralisers. The salt bath is mainly used here to kill parasites on the fish. Just a note, When treating parasites this way. Place 4 teaspoons of salt in a bucket per 4 litres of water from the aquarium. What amount is some? Once the salt is dissolved, place the fish in the bucket for five to thirty minutes. Observe the fish closely, and if it exhibits any signs of distress, return it to the fish tank immediately. Or once they lose balance, as in tilting over. How did you go? Get your water tested? Umm thats why I had this up first. :roll: Goldfish are still a dirty fish as in high carriers of diseases. Imported ones are worse. Banned ah, wow. Thats good too. ps; did forget to add some salt to the tank as well. 1 tbsp per 40 litres be fine. Frenchy

If your water is soft it would be more prone to dropping. What is the carbonate & general hardness of the water? {gh, kh} Frenchy

I would get the water tested first. If there are/have been ammonia..spikes then that would of burned the skin, making the goldies more prone to diseases. The reason I think this is that the diseases you have described are common for goldies when things go wrong. Although in saying that I bet one of your goldies was carrying more than its fair share of problems. Especially if newly imported; I have seen my fair share of sickly goldies. Where I used to work, treating new goldies was a rountine rather than wait & see if they are carrying anything...we had our own home brew parasite mixture, so wasn't a costly exercise. Firstly white spot treatment is an anti parasite, so fungicide is worthless here. The ones that are breathing heavy & thrashing about, sounds like parasites too. Use Praziquantel. The red sores, are more than likely a gram-negative Bacterial infection. Oxytetracycline is what I would probably use. Good luck. I am not sure how these drugs react if used together. Maybe best to treat for the parasites first. Maybe the bottles will have warnings, or whatever. Full course of treatment needed for both. Parasites usually treat for just over a week, bacterial infections is 10 days. Or if only one has sores, cull this one now & just concentrate on the parasites. Frenchy

Is the tank heavily airated? This could be the cause of your pH rising. You are expelling CO2 at the surface which will make the pH rise. Frenchy

Got me thinking the same way too. Maybe a trick would be t leave "it" with the girls and see what happens. I have had victorians show plastic sexuality before, so maybe venting can be off. Frenchy

Sorry should of added that these guys can be timid when very young too. The robust nature of some malawi species can be to much. Frenchy

hmmm, a bit of colour for a girl, not unusual. As is females showing light colouration to avoid breeding, or in this case. I would guess that if it's a girl, showing colour as to be the dominant of the females. I like the last pic well done, very nice. Any chance of another vent photo for interest's sake? Nope thats fighting not breeding. Remember cichlids are territorial Sounds like the old cichlid dosen't like the new cichlid, thats why he has been chasing him & for the parrot to be damaged, he has tried to stick up for himself. Looks like the parrot, will continue to get a hiding. The best thing to do will be to seperate. Try & find out what the other cichlid is. Usually when adding cichlids to a tank best done in multiples, so to spend any agression too. ps; How big is the tank? How many cichlids are in there & what types? Frenchy

It is always trial & error when trying something like this. I don't mix & match much because it can be a lottery. Brichardis, if they pair up will want a section of the tank. Will depend on if they can all get along. How big is the tank? Frenchy

Depends on how big a balls the male has. :oops: sort of. :-? I would say he will nedd to grow up a bit. Generally a small male will find it hard to empress a larger female, hence breeding may have to wait to the male catches up in size. Frenchy
