  1. just one or can i have more with the 3 severums ?
  2. yeah the footprint is my biggest issue at the mo - my wife doesnt like fish (at least thats what she tells me - i see her watching them on the sly ) anyway shes putting the handbrake on what i can buy so sounds like an oscar is out for me... i so wanted a little albino they are so cool !!! will a jack dempsey or 2 or 3 and my severums be ok in said 200L tank ?
  3. really only 1 sev ? i have 3 in my 128L now - but i wanted to move them to a bigger tank and get an oscar - not sure i can afford a new tank of that size and at the price i just got quoted i liked the look and price of lmsmiths tank - but its only a 200L
  4. really? whats would be the min size ?
  5. im thinking of getting a 200L tank - 1150x450x400 - is this too small for 1 oscar and 3 severums ?
  6. no worries - there might be a better way of doing it but that seemed ok - i guess with the least amount of hassle for the fish etc it was pretty good - it took about 2 or 3 hours to complete from start to finish - just dont make it snow in your tank like i did to begin with - bubble walls and sand dont really mix too well  just sit them on top of the sand if you have any.
  7. i added silica sand to my tank recently - fully populated - heres what i did from start to finish * washed the sand - i had 4 half buckets and made sure the water was running clear in each of them * took about 50% water out of my tank and put that into a chilli bin * moved my fish and heater to the chilli bin * turned off my filter * removed all my plants and stones etc * removed a further 25% water from the tank * shovelled the sand into the tank slowly * arranged the plants etc * waited for the sand to fully settle * added 75% of the water from my chilli bin back into the tank * made sure the temp etc were all normal in the tank * then i just topped up the tank with fresh water and voila - all done
  8. thanks - i'll take a look at those if the stocking over the filter inlet dont work
  9. sponge filter - is that the one where the air is just fed through a tube at the bottom of the cage or with a pump sucking the water through it ?
  10. good idea - might nick some of the wifes stockings she wont mind im sure...
  11. oh jesus - that could be alot of fry going by the amount i saw get gobbled up last night - i have fairly powerful internal filter in the nursery tank will that affect the amount of fry that survive ? if it will - is there any way that I can slow it down - ie blockages or something to slow it down ?
  12. since i moved the 2 parents out of the community tank things are much better - im not sure if they tried spawning again in the small tank last night - i did see a couple of eggs floating around the tank before i went to bed but this morning i couldnt see them anymore... whats the average time between spawns ?
  13. is the aggressive behaviour between angels normal ? the one being attacked is looking really bad - fins torns, and scales looking taty etc.
  14. 1 of my angels started getting picked on last week but wasnt sure why then after a water change today 2 of my other angels started spawning in the corner of my community tank !! then all my other fish started eating the eggs - DOH - i have just moved the parents to my nursery tank luckily i keep my tanks at the same temp but will the parents start spawing again in this tank or will they give up with stress etc from the move ?
  15. i think im going to try a little bit of everything - these little guys just aint growing and i feel mean now knowing they should be bigger. so my list of things to try now is daily water changes - approx 10% more feeds during the day - currently doing 2 or 3 giving them different food - crushed micro granuals / crushed flake / microworms or Decapsulated Brine Shrimp is there anything i have missed ?
  16. do you mean the micro granuals ?
  17. heres a picture of my massive 2 month old baby http://tinyurl.com/pw77tb
  18. just updated my profile so the location is shown in there - cheers
  19. that could explain why they are stunted i better start feeding them more...
  20. Yeah they pretty much look the same as platies ive been doing 30% water changes bi weekly - is this enough or should it be less than that daily or every 2 days ? * are freshly hatched brine shrimp the same as decaps brine shrimp ? are either ok ? * where do you get microworms from and how to you keep them ? * i think the tank is a 50L i must measure it again to confirm * do they need to be a certain size before they start eating crushed pellets or flake ? i will take a photo of the little buggers tonight when i get home and post a link cheers Skip
  21. Hi - i have a few questions about my Swordtails and their babies. The first couple of "batches" mostly got eaten by my hungry severums because i didnt know what the signs were for the mother giving birth - I've managed to save 2 babies but they seem to be growing really slowly - i think they are about 2 months now and only marginly bigger than were when they were born - is this normal growth rate? im currently feeding them luiqifry about 3 times a day - is this enough ? if not how often should i feed them and also whats the best food to feed them ? i know theres a few questions in there and im sure i will have more shortly... cheers Skip
  22. they should be fine - i have 2 greens and a gold - the gold is chased around the tank a little but the smallest green severum in my tank but the golds fins etc are still in good condition..
  23. eaten / destroyed - same thing isnt it ?
  24. sorry yeah i know - i have only tried cold water plants in cold water - and since i had the bad experience i have never really tried again - although it could have been bad lighting that caused them all to die ? the lighting in my previous tank was pretty bad the LFS is a bit of a rip for anything - like at animates in old hutt road the sevs there are 25$ for a smallie - but in the animates in lower hutt the same size are 15$ - would be nice if they were consistant... oops getting off topic - maybe i will stay with placky plants for the time being esp since they dont get eaten
  25. are they all easy to get in welly ? and do you need a special bulb to make them grow - my last lot of plants (about 2 years ago) died when i had goldfish in the tank havent tried any since i moved to tropical fish so maybe its time i looked at it again
