Some of those pics are from G Alexander, who has been using zeovit for years, and other are from someone who have been using it for more than a year. Also, phosphate is not the only nutrient around.

Clearly you don't have enough understanding of science, or even maths to understand why releasing iron does not necessarily have to correspond to higher iron content in the water. Just because you keep asking the same questions it doesn't mean they haven't been answered.

Yes That's what the Lars Sebrella test did. A zeovit tank. They measured the concentration of iron in the solid zeolite BEFORE using it using using spectroscopy, then measured it again at the end of 48 days of using it in a tank. They found the concentration of iron had dropped significantly. Therefore it must have been leaching into the tank by whatever mechanism. So what part did I make up? The iron levels in water have little to do with how much iron is being put into the system. Think of it like ammonia, there is a lot of ammonia being processed in a tank, but water levels of ammonia are undetectable. I'm getting to that, just be patient, i've got three different replies to this thread on the go at the moment.

Yip, and his test didn't measure all of the iron released, just some of it. It would also be before any metal eating bacteria got in on the action too. Using a test kit to test iron won't tell you how much iron is being released and used in a tank. Nor is it easy to test using a hobby kit for something which is in the parts per billions. So testing for iron like this is not going to tell you much. I didn't just make that stuff up.

Many of the pictures i've seen of G.Alexander's tank i've seen cyano and other algaes, which wouldn't survive in a truly low nutrient environment.

Clearly it works, and clearly the results indicate it is adding a nutrient (even ignoring the analysis done in the past). But you said you have had increase algae growth at the same time? Interesting. This indicates an increase in nutrients, while at the same time colours are improving. What could causes that to happen? Many of the zeo tanks i see have really colourful corals, yet the tank contains a lot of cyano and other "high nutrient" type algaes all over the rocks, yet it claims to be a low nutrient system? I've noticed this even in well established zeo tanks. Sure it works, in that it produces colourful corals, but i don't think it is a low nutrient system.

cookie, i think you got the wrong end of the stick there. I was saying that following the zeo guidelines, people generally do more water changes than those not using zeo, and therefore spend more on salt a month.

The only way you can say that is if you know why the polyps are extended in the first place. If you can't tell why polyps are extended, there is no way you can even generalise to say that the polyp extension is generally related to "happiness". Layton

How do you know a coral is not "hyperventilating", or feeding, or trying to purge waste etc when it's polyps are extended? It could be doing any of those things and may or may not be a "happy" time for the coral. That's all. So maybe by upgrading the lighting, the coral was hyperventilating due to increased zoox activity? Or maybe it was happy. Polyp extension is not necessarily a sign the coral is "happy". Nor is it a sign the coral is "unhappy".

Why?

They could be increasing surface area to get rid of increased O2 from increased zooxanthellae activity. Really there is no way for sure to know why a coral has it's polyps extended, just by looking at it.

Could be a sign of stress. Corals extend their polyps for a number of different reasons, not necessarily because they are happy.

I've used mainly red sea salt for the last three years. No problems with it other than mag and alk can be a little low for my liking. Layton

Three halides provide much better coverage on a 6' tank. so maybe have 250's at each end of the tank and leave a 150 for the middle. If you bump up to 250's cut a couple of hours off the photoperiod for the first few days. To give the corals a bit of time to adapt.

Many other forums have a little link which will display a "printer friendly" version of a thread (usually with all the posts for multipage threads) I haven't found a link like that on this forum, but if it existed you could print it to a pdf for offline viewing.
