  1. OK, so if the solution so far is correct... 3 groups of 4 coins. TRIAL 1: Weigh group 1 against group 2. If balanced, the odd coin out is in Group 3 If they are not balanced: TRIAL 2: weigh group 1 against group 3 If group 1 was heavier in trial 1, but balanced in trial 2 then the odd coin must be light and in group 2 If group 1 was lighter in trial 1, but balanced in trial 2 then the odd coin must be heavy and in group 2 If group 1 was lighter in trial 1 and also trial 2 then the odd coin must be light and in group 1 If group 1 was heavier in trial 1 and also in trial 2 then the odd coin is heavy and in group 1 If group 1 was balanced in trial 1 and heavier in trial 2 then the odd coin is light and in group 3 If group 1 was balanced in trial 1 and lighter in trial 2 then the odd coin is heavy and in group 3 Here is where I'm stuck... TRIAL 3 Divide the suspect group in 2. Depending on whether the odd coin is lighter or heavier as determined by trial 2 you can tell within two coins which is the dodgy one. OR Put one coin each of the suspect pile on the balance. If they are balanced... damn. If not, you have your coin!
  2. I think I bought that car after the accident! Well it looked a lot like it... http://www.cardomain.com/ride/383216/2
  3. OK, im going to get 15. Does seem like its going to be an awfully crowded tank once they get bigger, but i'll take your word for it. I'll let you all know when I get 'em
  4. Looking good. Are you going to fill that water level up more?
  5. Here are the service people I know of in our family: Uncle - served in merchant navy on the Queen Mary (I have his ID) Uncle's uncle- shot down and killed flying a bristol beaufort in belgium Grandad (wife's side) - served with the Canadian army. Not sure how, but the wife thinks he was in the airborne. Opa (wife's side) - served in the wermacht on the eastern front. Apparently met Hitler once. Great uncle - killed serving on a canadian destroyer trying to save other crew Apparently my wife's two grandads got on great, despite serving on either side of the war. They NEVER talked about it.
  6. So tank crowding wise, another 12 fish won't be a problem? My ice blue has always been 'relatively' mellow, especially now that he doesn't have any girls to show off to. But he is a big, tough fish. If I do this, ill be sad to see him go. Will the dems hassle they male peacocks and stop them from showing good colour? or do they pretty much keep their carnage to themselves?
  7. I've wanted to keep a colony of dems for a while now, especially with a few other contrasty fish. I have a 4ft 240L tank. At the moment in it I have: 1x 10cm+ Male metricliama greshakei 5x electric yellows 3 x small male peacocks 1 x brown hap 1 x BN I know I should get 12+ dems, but what on my list should I keep with them and what should I re-home?
  8. Are they the plecs that were selling for like $900?
  9. Britney thinks there are only two types of people in the world. But she had kids with K-Fed and proceeded to drive with them on her lap... so I'd take Jennifer as a more credible source
  10. There's nothing overly aggresive on that list... I've never kept a livingstonii but I'd imagine that would be the meanest dog on that block. I wouldn't think a BN would be a problem.
  11. nah, I say bristlenose FTW!
  12. haha, awesome names for your furry friends.... and funny pics too!
  13. Would something like this be suitable as a sump pump (the tank is approx 966L) http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=284012437 If so, how much should I bid up to?
  14. Hi Toddy, The most commonly kept non-cichlids kept with the African Cichlids would be catfish. Especially synodontis or plecs. You probably already know this, but community fish are generally not good companions for cichlidsl, and even more caution should be shown with rift lake fish. But in saying that, I've seen people successfully put all kinds of things in with african cichlids... BTW, 'Giraffe' and Livingstoni are not the same thing. A Giraffe is Nimbochromis Venustus, which is a very similar looking hap.
  15. Another question relating to lighting. Someone I know who owns a LFS said they could get me 180cm double 40W lights for a great price. They are considerably shorted than the 230cm tank, but 10cm or so of this will be lost to the overflow. Would 20cm at either end of the tank look strange without lighting directly over it?
  16. Either, depending on what is best for the sump. Nothing has been built yet.
  17. One of the guys who I've been talking to about building the tank doesnt seem to know anything about sumps and plumbing. This made me nervous, but he does own a company that does this kind of thing. he's an old guy - are sumps are newish thing? He's happy to make anything I tell him to, but he's obviously not going to be able to help with the design. What would you do hole size wise for a tank of my dimensions/size? Its probably not too disimilar to your 8ft (nominal size of 966 litres)
  18. You're right. Any added revenue it creates could never be attributed to it directly. But maybe if we look it another way there are some ways to consider the financial sense of this project. If I expect this project to have a 1 year pay-back period, $3000 would require an extra $58 of revenue per week. As far as cost of running goes - 2 x 300W heaters, 150W lighting, 50W pump = 800kw @ 24c per kw/hr = $32/week Throw in $10/week for food and extra costs, it would cost me about $100/week to run. The question is: would it likely attract more than $100 extra revenue per week?
  19. That profile pic reminds me of Gellieman and his amazing video Aicha
  20. Just to clarify something: the tank is not a substitute for good coffee! I trained with NZ #1 and World #7 barrista... im pretty damn fussy when it comes to coffee! Plus, there are plenty of places that make diabolical coffee and still exist. Just look at Robert Harris and Muffin Break (not to say they couldnt make good coffee, just they love to employ school kids who dont drink coffee. No wait, im not sure anyone could make robert harris coffee taste good)
  21. Haha, funny But now im going to be a geek and tell you that you're last word is made up. Hippopotamus is greek in origin, where hippos = horse and potamos = river ie river horse. Sesquipedalia is latin, literally meaning "foot and a half long" So I think you are saying you have an irational fear of small river horses?
  22. Are you thinking of creating a malawi cichlid sausage fest?
  23. Bar seating is common in cafes. Its a way that single people can sit near each other without feeling awkward (you're facing the same way). Instead of looking out into the the road, they are looking at the tank instead.
  24. Good coffee and food keeps people coming back. It also does attract new people, but that word-of-mouth process is slow. What I am trying to do is attract more people into the cafe so that I can impress them with the coffee, food and service.
