  1. I'm not really trying to defend that stupid statement, but it's not as dumb as it sounds. Central/south america is known as 'latin america' as they primarily speak languages derived from latin ie spanish and portugese. But you probably already know this
  2. I asked a question if they look different in the flesh... cos the pics they provide dont look yellow at all, that I can see. I didnt think sunshines really got any blue on their body and they look to have a fair bit. Sounds like the feeling is "if the seller isn't positive, don't touch them... or be ok with the idea of possibly buying hybrids"
  3. Hi all, I asked a while ago about red shoulders as they are a fish I'd very much like to get my hands on. There is an auction on trademe at the moment they are calling sunshine peacocks, but they bought them as red shoulders. What do they look like to you guys? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=219541010
  4. The place I'm looking at is 115 sqm - its pretty big. And the space is very poorly utlilised. If I can find a place a tank would look awesome in, without interfering too much with practicality I just might do it. At that point I think ill have to start another thread to gather ideas
  5. I didn't bid. I was nervous about the glass thickness and repairing and the general response on here confirmed that. I just might put a nice display tank in the cafe... so I might be asking some more advice on that soon. Especially around design... I know nothing about sumps. I just need to make sure I still have money in the budget for the necessities before I spend any on a tank. "sorry, we don't have an espresso machine yet... but you're welcome to stay and look at my display tank" Maybe something around 6"x2"x2" would be a better idea. Or maybe something longer with a smaller cross section. I already owe you coffee for a year for the friendly advice and great fish deals you've given me so far!
  6. I had a 24W light over my last 2ft tank and constantly had to cut back the plants. From what i've read a lot depends on the depth of the tank -and your tank is only 1ft deep. How are the plants you currently have growing?
  7. Unless of course someone is willing to pick it up and getting it repaired on my behalf... would be a years free coffee in it for ya! haha
  8. Its annoying when people arent that clear in their listings. I asked that question under my wifes account name and still feel like I don't know the answer. Id LOVE to put this in the cafe, it would look spectacular as a big malawi tank. But I guess Im going to have more than enough to keep me occupied over the next month and having to get a mammoth tank fixed is another headache I could do without I hope it comes out nicely for anyone else who plans on bidding.
  9. I wasn't really sure where to post this, but there is a very large tank on auction at this stage - 8ft x 2.6ft x 2.6ft in 10mm glass. Its a monster. I'm interested mainly because I am currently putting in an offer on a cafe and think it would look truly spectacular as a feature in the place. I just can't quite come to grips with a couple of things... 1/ It has a broken bottom pane of glass so it would hve to be repaired. I will try and find out how much it would cost to replace - but anyone want to hazard a guess? 2/ How on earth would you move it? 3/ What kind of heaters, filters, light etc would you need for this behemouth? I'd imagine filtration can't be as bad for a huge tank as you would never stock it close to its technical capacity. The auction closes in 12 hours and I have no idea whether this is agreat opportunity or a very dumb thing to consider Any input would be appreciated!
  10. I guess there is no such thing as overfiltering, but that CF1200 moves a lot of water... id imagine you'd create quite the water flow in a 150L tank. As long as you're cool with that. Looking forward to seeing how your plans come together!
  11. Is that a greshakei in the centre foreground? Wow does it ever have some red on it!
  12. Here is how my tank looks at the moment. I went for plenty of caves, but I sure do like the look of the first one aquatopia posted. Maybe my africans dont need quite so much rock space...
  13. I was going to reply, but that second article isn't really that long winded or technical... maybe try giving it a read?
  14. Oooh. I have such bad fish envy right now. I've already put my name on the waiting list for babies
  15. So where in Christchurch did ya get hold of them, Mark? Would make a nice addition to my tank
  16. Wow, they look amazing. Can they go in a tank with some of the more placid mbuna? Anyone out there breeding them?
  17. Surely there is a market for them... I've seen that at pet stores locally anywhere from $19 - $45
  18. Thats awesome... must be amazing to watch. Must also mean you get at TON of little lionheads
  19. Yeah, these two are shacking up. But seriously, you should see the size of the female... she is somewhere between 2 and 3cm long. I have 7 lionheads of various sizes in my tank for just over a month and the males are becoming quite apparent with darker colours and more of bump. There are two other territories being set up and its quite funny watching the border disputes between them. May be other couples forming for all I know. I do like lionheads, but I think I have a few too many So mystic, let me get this straight, you're saying the older batches of babies will actually help defend any new fry? I thought my kribs were good parents... but they totally turned on the older siblings when the new eggs were being laid.
  20. Wow, thats quite the lionhead production line you have going there! Hmm, sounds like lionheads arent that interested in eating fry of their own kind... my problem is they share a tank with some greyshakeis, johanis, and a couple of random other malawi cichlids. Oh well, I guess I just watch and see what happens...
  21. If they do start breeding, I cant imagine them effectively keeping their tankmates at bay. I may have to set up my fry overflow tank sooner than I expected! haha Im still having a hard time picking the difference between males and females at the sizes they are (2 - 7cm), but im pretty sure a couple of the bigger fish are females. I guess he just happened to like one on the smaller end...
  22. Hi all, I have 7 small lionheads in my 4ft aquarium (thanks Navarre!) and I'm wondering if the are already shacking up. The biggest is a male of around 6-7cm and it has claimed the far left hand of the tank and been fairly cranky about keeping the tankmates out. Ive never kept lionheads before, so I figured that males just must like to claim a piece of turf. As it turns out, there is a small lionhead that it also sharing its territory - it looks to only be about 3cm long. It stays almost entirely in a nook in the bogwood, while the male is busy shifting rocks around... surely its too small for these two to be breeding already?
  23. That looks like some kinda female peacock to me
  24. The dems are very cool looking... but the only time ive seen them available here they were around $25 each. Multiply that out by 12 and its not a very attractive prospect
