  1. Could people please list any cichlids that they have already photographed and sent in. That way none of us will make double ups and make someone else's job harder.
  2. Well since you already have Mbuna in your tank you could just stick with a few more.. maybe some bumble bee cichlids (crabro), estherae (peach, orange cichlids), ice blue zebras (greshaki). Try stay away from any of the melenchromis, most of them are quite aggressive.
  3. Im in the proccess of building a wet/dry filter for a 5' tank I'v got most of it sorted but not sure what size tank to use for the sump. is there a way to work out what the minimum size should be or is it trail and error?
  4. not sure about the kenyi as we have never had any but we have kept yellows, zebras, convicts (all female) and peacocks all in the same tank and never had any problems. just remember cichlids are really messy and the more you have the more you have to filter and with our 300L tank with 2 internal filters one doing 1200lph and one doing 600lph (I think) and we still occasionally get some high nitrate spikes and doing 20% water changes a week combats it pretty well

    peacock

One of our peacocks is really withdrawn from the rest... now in its own icsolation tank but its not eating and colours are really dull, nothings wrong with the water and dont really know what to do, tryed giving it a salt bath and that hasnt helped it much. Any ideas?
  6. yeah I know what you mean, they should let more spieces of tropical fish in the country for the one reason being that most of our waterways are to cold for them. There are some awesome cichlids out there I would love to keep, exspecially some of the african ones. If no one else wants to organise getting pictures and book references for the cichlids i will happily do it if people are willing to help out by sending clear photos of ones they have with there scientific name. That way only one list is getting sent, instead of someone else having to sort through and take out all the double ups.
  7. Is everything on the full list all the fishies that already have been logged with photos and identification?
  8. A list of the fish we have are as follows Malawi: Metriaclima (or Pseudotropheus) Estherae (orange one and a peach one) Metriaclima (or Pseudotropheus) Greshakei (Blue with orange) Cyrtocara Moorii Melanochromis Auratus Labidochromis Caeruleus Psuedotropeus Socolofi (albino) Pseudotropheus Crabro Nimbochromis Venustus American Geophagus Brasiliensis Cichlasoma Salvini Archocentrus Nigrofasciatus Aequidens pulcher Cichlasoma Octofasciatum Red-headed cichlid-cant find scientific name. Tanganyika Neolamprologus Brichardi
  9. Just wondering if anyone is organzing something for cichlids like rob is for the catfish.... We would love to see the spieces we already have to stay in the country and a few that are very rare to become more popular. If there is someone doing this or people that would like to help us do this with providing photos and things please let us know.
  10. If we are transfering fish from a small tank to a new set up larger one we usually try fill the new tank up to half (if possible) with water from the old tank and sit the old filter operating in the new tank for a few days to make sure the new tank is cycling.
  11. Hmmm we need the same stuff to treat bloat, there is a seachem and aquatronics drug that contains it for fish but dont know if its avaliable in nz.... best bet would be to ring tropical blues or goldfish bowl tomorrow to see if theres any chemicals containing it, please let us know if you have any success.
  12. Have been feeding them the same stuff for months and only in the last 2 weeks we have 2 giraffe's and another looks like its on its way out.... the only thing that could have been different was that i was occasionally chucking in some freeze dryed tubflix worms but that was last done friday and noticed the bloated giraffe this morning.
  13. One of our giraffe's have blown up like a ballon, dont think its dropsy because none of its scales are sticking out, we have lost a few fish before when they have done this.... any way to cure it or anyone know what it is?
  14. Is there any special type of concrete to use and anything else i have to be aware of when attempting to make some of these for fish tanks?
  15. Is there anywhere to get this stuff in teh waikato or auckland region for cheaper than what you pay at the stores, if you are after a large amount it gets quite exspensive to buy it in sacks from hollywoods.

    WORMS

if you dice up the worms and slightly boil them they are fine to feed fish, most of our fish like them live and still whole though
