  2. Even if the insects in the wild are good on their own, gut loading them at home just doubles the goodness. To me, pellets aren't just about the protein content but they're also important for the vitamins which the fish would otherwise not get as much of.

    hard working dog

Heh heh.. Wish my dog could do that!
  5. Without superworms, I guess we just gotta feed more mealworms to make up for it haha. Too bad we also don't have house geckos here lol! I remember them being such a pest in asia, would have been nice to have a free supply of fish food on the walls..
  6. Hmmm.. Didn't see it that way! Sad how people treat animals according to the monetary value. Would be nice to have more live food available in NZ though - gut stuffed bullfrogs sounds so much better than gut stuffed mealworms haha.
  7. LoL, comparing what we do in NZ for our fish, it makes the asian fish keepers seem so lazy! They literally just feed superworms and bullfrogs straight without bothering about protein content or vitamins. Just reading the discussions we have about PELLETS and the science behind it all, it surprises me that we're more on the ball than the asian fish keepers haha. (Though, Henward, you and I are technically NZ-Asian XBs LOL!)
  8. :rotf: That picture made my day!
  9. I don't think I would be able to sleep at night knowing that my 1000kg tank and stand could potentially land in the downstairs' neighbours living room if the flooring wasn't structurally sound enough! Much prefer having a tank on concrete flooring in a HOUSE here in NZ lol.
  10. Personally, I wouldn't feed only frogs as a staple because I believe in the nutritional benefits of pellets, but if we had proper bullfrogs in NZ which fish enjoy, I would replace mealworms with bullfrogs. I've read somewhere before that bullfrogs are really high in protein, so one big bullfrog would probably be the equivalent of feeding 15-20 mealworms for the same amount of protein. I don't think asian fish keepers even bother gut loading. I'm so confused lol! There are people who post pictures of awesome muscly aros and they claim that the diet consists of one of the following: superworms or prawns or bullfrogs. In other words, by sticking with one of the aforementioned as a staple, they have successfully raised great looking fish! But I can't justify feeding just one type of food every day - and I definitely won't stop the pellets. So theoretically, my fish on a balanced diet SHOULD exceed theirs in size (well, that's the hope anyway!)
  11. I have always heard that bullfrogs are really good for protein and bulk fish up really well, but never really saw proof like this before lol..
  12. Someone on the Arofanatics forum posted an update of his XB from May to June.. May: June: He said that during the one month he fed the XB only bullfrogs - never seen so much bulk in one month! Especially around the shoulder area..
  13. David - awesome pics! Looks like you had a really good time. Re: the fish shop in Singapore. That was my favourite LFS when I lived there; I used to live a short bus ride away. Most commonly known as C328 (Clementi Block 328) by the locals, but any fish keeper in Singapore will know it. Anybody who finds HFF Mt Roskill cramped will NOT survive at C328 haha! But there is sooo much dry stuff in there for great prices if you can be bothered to look. (Sigh, I miss that place sometimes lol)
  14. I think you've got a point there, David. Personally, I've only ever seen two black aros in person. One was Henward's and the other was at the biggest fish farm in Singapore. Yup, ONE specimen in the biggest fish farm/ arowana exporter in Singapore. I don't know if they were all sold out or if blacks are really that scarce. You'd think that blacks would be endangered considering how few of them you see compared to the more expensive breeds. :dunno: Also curious, how would breeders sterilise the fish without harming them? Hormones? Chemicals in the water?
  15. Silvers and jars aren't worth doing IMO.. Probably do it for bragging rights more than anything else lol. The cost of setting up and running the breeding house would not be covered by the return lol. Besides, anybody know how to sex an aro? Haha, very near impossible by appearance alone.
  16. I did recently consider mussels for aro food because you could stuff a pellet inside, but decided to stick with prawns due to the added benefits of the shell..
  17. That'll be Henward lol.. He's the only one among us humble mortals who can afford all the nice fish haha..
