  1. A couple of lads have turned out to be one lad and one lass and now they're getting cosy. The lass is exhibiting "go away" behaviour to the other fish in the tank whereas the lad is digging in the cave (comes out with mouthfuls of sand and spits it out). My convicts had reversed roles with the female staying in the cave and the male keeping guard so I assume this is the norm for T-Bars?
  2. Well I gave him all the pieces to build a new tank anyway so technically it's new, but with old glass
  3. I asked for a quote a while ago to build a tank and it was going cost about $250 for a tank half the size of the one he's repairing.
  4. Update: guy from Port Nicholson glass (don't know his name, he never said) picked up the tank - was not impressed with shoddy lid job and will do it again for the same price which was very nice - he pointed out more flaws in the bracing and said what the other guy did won't hold and he explained what he will do to fix it. He also said the tank was only braced along the bottom of one side and not the other so will also fix that - which explains the leak. After everything I'll be spending on this tank, it would have been cheaper to have just had a new one made  Oh well, at least now I'll be safe in the knowledge that the tank will finally be set up and running once it's home - I just hope the fish don't get too stressed living in their bins for a week. One already tried to make an escape for freedom before I got the lid in place and has brained himself a few times since but seems to have finally settled down.
  5. And keep the glass clean - I can't find a definitive answer from the net.
  6. Well they all know me at the gym and the guy on reception at 6am is so cruisy, he'd probably let me do it too :rotf:
  7. I plan to clean out them out properly before use, and do daily water changes when the fish are in them - will that do?
  8. Yep, very frustrating I might tell the guy on reception that when he's tired of seeing goldfish being eaten alive, and members being horrified by the sight, to give me a call.
  9. I don't think they are, they're made by Perroplas of NZ and are storage bins - will that be a problem?
  10. The BN will be there to eat the algae which is why the tank is heated. Last time, I asked to take the goldfish that was almost dead from being eaten alive and they didn't call me back - but the next time I was there the tank had been cleaned and dead/nearly dead fish gone so guess they went back to the guy to fix - they don't want my help.
  11. Very tempting - I'd probably keep the tank heated but would replaced the goldfish with neon tetras or something as they're so pretty when lit up (and the tank is too small to house many goldfish anyway). I'd need to investigate how much the set up would cost and how this was paid for and the daily upkeep - though as I go to the gym every day, I would ensure they're fed daily too. Unfortunately I think the manager thought my help last time was interferring and that the other guy knows more than me so not sure if my offer to help would be accepted. However, I'm fairly sure the other guy would charge a weekly or monthly fee, whereas I wouldn't so my help would be cheaper too. But I really hate cannister filters, I'm really crap with them so that would be my downfall.
  12. Actually, the ones I will end up buying are 110L and have wheels - just not sure if I'll be able to fit them both in my car so may require two trips. I was a bit paranoid about the bath idea...with no lids..... so the bins seem a perfect solution - and will be fab storage after
  13. They're already paying someone else who provides the fish, food, set up etc. - but he doesn't come out often and pretty much leaves it to the staff to take care of it, and they do a pretty poor job as they have no idea.
  14. The goldfish have been replaced with fresh stock and guess what - the BN is once again attacking them - one fish had it's tail completely shredded and was clearly stressed.

  16. I don't know, they've paid out on all my car claims so far - why would you say they're useless?
  17. Ditto. Good point though, especially if my LL wants to replace the carpet, I'll need to check what my insurer will cover but I think mine was a blanket policy too without needing to specify everything. I'm with AMI.
  18. I phoned Port Nicholson and he'll do it for me for $100 - $150 maximum, includes travel etc. etc. too so I'm rapt! :happy1: He's coming out Saturday morning to pick the tank up and said the fish will be fine in the bath until I pop them back in the the tank the following weekend so that's what I'll do.
  19. @ godly, I'll make some calls to glaziers tomorrow - it's a shame it's had to come to that. @ Graham, the tank is too big to transport so unless Pete makes house calls...
  20. True, but I'm always paranoid that the fish will jump out and that's a very interim measure. I'm starting to think I may have to eat humble pie and ask the guy who made my lids to rebuild the tank - I can imagine how much he'll charge for it though
  21. The edge of the tank is on the edge of the cabinet it sits on so can't really wrap gladwrap around anyway - I tried some silicone glue stuff and and duct tape and it didn't work - as the dripping has become faster At this stage, I'd be happy if I could borrow a tank or someone could take care of my fish so I can drain the tank and stop the damage it's doing to the dresser it's sitting on until I can get it remade - of course I'd happy to pay for costs
  22. I noticed this only actually started after I topped the tank up (I had the level low as there was no lid, but once made could top it up and that's when the leak started) - unfortunately lowering the level hasn't helped - the leaking has got worse and is dripping once every 2 seconds (a metronome in the background  ) Really? Gladwrap? Well I'll try anything at this stage :nilly:
  23. Oh gawd, there's no way I can do this - the tank is very tall so I'd need someone to help me hold it in to place, let alone the rest The leak has actually got worse so it will have to be done fairly urgently now - I'll need someone to come and do it as the tank is too big to fit into my car - please can someone help!
