  1. If they're new parents or are unsure of their surroundings, they often eat them straight after they lay.
  2. Yeah, at the end of the day, they want money and if something isn't selling, some money is better than none. I was surprised when I first saw stuff in there too, but I see it pretty often now. They had a big jebo filter last time I was there.
  3. I wish we got sugargliders here, that's what I want.
  4. Try the search function, there are lots of good pics and diagrams on here showing it.
  5. +1,000,000 on that one. They're very undemanding. I have 2 big filters running on the tank, and haven't done a water change in about 4 weeks and didn't feed for a whole week when I was busy at uni and leaving at 6am and not coming home till after lights out, and they were totally fine. Great to watch, too.
  6. I guess I just know where to look. Cash converters is a great place to get tanks/filters. There's a 3ft tank there right now for $49, in great condition. I'm going to bargain them down to $30 if it's still there on Monday. I also got an eheim 2213 with media from there for $40, and a 2215 for $25, both with boxes.
  7. Trumpet snails are the hardest to get rid of because they burrow in the substrate, and come out at night. But loaches should eat them, albeit slowly.
  8. Send them to meeeeeee!!! Because it's so cold, my snail population is dwindling. Tania and Scott very nicely bought me a whole heap a couple of weeks ago , but it's freezing outside where they live so the breed really slow....
  9. Yup they're choc zebras. Great fish. I'm gonna take a look at them and try to sex them soon, and maybe find them a mate.
  10. Silicone doesn't stick to acrylic very well, not sure how best to stick it to glass. To get acrylic to bond, you need trichloromethane, better known as chloroform. You can get it from a pharmacy.
  11. They're shy when they're small. Give them a few months to settle in, and leave them alone. Feed them a variety, and give them lots of places to hide. Eventually, they'll come out. They will be getting food, but they're pretty sneaky and you won't see them do it. When I first got my L270s, I didn't see them for 4 months. Now they're out all the time and look great.
  12. Why didn't you just boil it for a few hours? Set up a big pot on the BBQ and leave it to boil.
  13. That's true actually, you know, I forget the make of car, but they replaced the glass to special double-coated-plastic-lined-with-a-cherry-on-top glass and it made the safety rating go up a whole point (out of 5) because it was less likely to crush on a rolling impact. Glass is pretty amazing stuff, it can take a surprising amount of abuse.
  14. Are they important things we might like to share with the class? I'm scared now that my catdoor will make my house fall down or something
  15. It'll be freezing outside, so whatever you wear, make sure it's warm. The dress sounds fine, but make sure you wear heels. People our age can't do knee length dresses without looking silly unless we wear awesome shoes.
  16. Tank - free - given to me as it was broken - I had another tank the same size that I took a side from and fixed, already had the silicone. Eheim 2213 - $40 Stand - $20 (loving the bunnings discount) Light - 2 x 4ft single T8 tubes - free from a garage sale - they were brand new from a closed down petstore. New bulbs and ballasts - $15 (bunnings again) Fish - $5 for all the guppies and BN Plants - $5 =$85 total
  17. I don't have the $ for it right now, but make sure you post whether it's good and replacements etc and I'll look into it. Thanks!
  18. I've got 13 dems, but also some lionhead cichlids in the tank that'll probably eat the babies. I was thinking I'd have a go at stripping them into a container in the top of the tank. I'm sort of worried about putting the mum back in - I know if you have her out recovering, sometimes the others will harrass her when she goes back in, but then she probably does need a break as well. They're pretty laid back and I haven't seen any signs that would point me one way or another with them. Maybe I need to watch them more.
  19. How do you sex dems? Mine are getting pretty big now, most about 5 - 6cm, and I'm aware that they might be having babies. I haven't noticed any who look to be holding, and they're all eating, but I don't really know what I'm looking for. So, how do you sex them? How do I know if they're holding? Pics would be best if you have any
  20. Get yourself a refractometer, they're the only way to accurately test your specific gravity. Should be aiming for 1.005 - 1.015 for F8s and BBGs. I've never kept them together, but lots of people do, so you should be alright. F8s are pretty aggressive and need about 75 litres by themselves. You're best keeping 1 f8 and maybe 4 - 6 BBGs. Puffers and BBGs are sensitive to nitrates, so you should keep them under 10ppm. They'll also need to go into a fully cycled tank. Mix the salt in the water and leave it mixing with a power head for 24hrs. There are some BW plants you can get which both the BBGs and puff will appreciate. BBGs like small caves to live in, so try some cockle shells.
  21. There was another site like this but it was round pipes. They connected about 4 massive tanks around some guys house, and apparently the fish used them all the time. Can't find the link right now though sorry.
  22. How do you mean it was less than you could have bought the glass for? Did you use glass that you already had, or do you have a secret supply?
  23. Thanks. What should you aim for the number to be at a minimum? One of my tanks is sitting at about 3...
  24. I broke down the tank and resealed it. Next time I'll do black silicone so I can't see it.
