  1. Its pretty easy to see how natural sunlight improves the colour or red/orange goldfish in a pond vs tank, so I guess it would apply to other fish too. Those fish in pics people like Koji post of big aro breeders being pulled out of the ponds always look really nice, and you know they haven't had artificial lighting on them...
  2. This is my mates aro, he's crazy, keeps it in a 2000L tank with 100 huge clown loaches, a heap of plecs and the biggest flagtail in the world. I heard he feeds it kittens but not sure if thats true.
  3. Doubt it, unfortunately. Would love to have some as part of the big SA tank I'll one day have. I did see an trademe auction a few years back where a guy in Napier was selling a big tank with a couple of huge dats, big jag, and two pikes (not sure what species tho). So at least one species has been here some time...
  4. You can get the noodles in a bulk 20-25kg sack for a reasonable price if you need a lot of them. Pumice would be a better option than scoria. As Henward asked, are you using it submerged or above the water level?
  5. My old ~50cm fire eel died a similarly sudden death, fine one day dead the next.
  6. Do you keep it in the fridge?!?! I was running two 300W Jagers on my 1400L tank, but that was in a well insulated room with other tanks. Still running two 300W on the 400L tank I have now and usually only one turns on.
  7. I've done something similar to what Geoff described but suspending the wood above the tank with only the back half of the fish in the water. Usually after a minute or so they figure out they need to get out of there! Have you tried watching at night to see if it comes out?
  8. Not right now, I've just bought the one above from fishstreet, and we're in the midst of hunting for a house/section and planing a build. Just need to get some adapters to get it up and running.
  9. RIP Earnie, he was a monster!!! No pics of the dissection?
  10. I found having all my tanks in the same well insulated room made it more economical to heat, but the bill would still fluctuate by over $100/month from summer to winter.
  11. Not wanting to seem ungrateful and I know you're all working for free etc etc etc, but what are the upgrades that caused all the problems?
  12. Nice list Jamosfish, interested to see pics of your royal/L027, I've been trying to educate myself about the differences between L27/L191 etc but I can't really figure it out!

  14. Good work Geoff! Chipped in my 2c worth. If anyone wants to have a crack at IDing my "clown pleco" more accurately go for your life!
  15. 250L ain't really big enough for breeding jags OR a black shark, let alone both together. If your jag pair is smaller the tank should be ok (not for ever though), but keep a close eye on them for aggression. Jags are usually good parents/partners but in a small tank one could turn on the other and do some serious damage. As for any other fish unfortunate to be in the same tank... How big are the pair?
  16. Get a bunch of neons and hope they're small enough for him to ignore? Could buy a pretty big school of tetras with the money from the green tho!
  17. Would look nice in a big school...
  18. That seems more sensible than one enormous tank, and you could still use a solar tube to put natural light over it...
  19. Hurry up and buy a house so you can build a mega tank with a solar tube over it to get some natural light on him! :digH:
  20. Do I really need to say it..... HE IS SPECTACULAR! even more so in the flesh, really good looking fish, colour is certainly getting more impressive with age. No pics of the other tankmates this time?
  21. My reason for wanting one is so both heaters will turn off and on together rather than trying to get both their thermostats in sync, so +-1C would be acceptable.
  22. I've read that they aren't at all predatory and you could keep them with any sized tetra, but have never tested it. If you want it to be authentic check fishbase.org and find species that have similar distribution, some corys would round it out nicely too. Personally I'd go with something light coloured like lemons or rummys. I'll give you a call about dropping off that food this week too.
  23. Have asked that question of the seller, if its plug and play or needs to be hard wired.
  24. Anyone used one of these before; http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=474686833&permanent=0 What about this one, all the way from Czech; http://www.top-thermostat.com/en/produkt-1564/aquarium-temperature-controller-atc-300a.html?currency=eur
