  1. I'd say a lot more likely he smacked into something. Silver sharks are pretty jumpy little guys. Especially if you only have one instead of a school like they prefer and in a smaller tank.
  2. Nope, from what I can see, it's all the same stuff. Trichozole, Metronidozole and Flagyl(For humans). Well, I guess it could be slight variations, but I dunno, probably just differences for what it's intended for. The medicine may be named Metronidazole, and branded as Trichozole for vets and flagyl for humans.
  3. Trichozole IS metronidozole. Just gave the fish the last dose today...So, we'll see if it did the trick.
  4. Just thought I'd let everyone know. I've been having a problem with my fish and got some Metronidazole from a vet at the Wellington Animates named Tracy. She was very very helpful.
  5. I've got some pretty coarse sand, pleco seems to love it. I don't think there'd be any problem with fine sand like beach sand or similar. Only problem I have with the coarse sand is my cichlids spit it on top of my redspot and he's too lazy to shake it off.
  6. I'd say it's much more likely they just couldn't handle the temperature in the tank than not enough air. They'd have been relatively cold water snails.
  7. I do. I just bought some trace element mix, chelated iron and epsom salts from a garden center and about 2 tablespoons of each in a squeezy bottle full of water. A little squirt ever night when I feed the fish seems to work great. It seems like the plants don't grow at all and get covered in algae if I don't use it, but they grow nicely if I do. Oh, The bottle usually lasts me something like 6 months and I think all up everything cost me about $30...Probably got enough for 10 years.
  8. Oh no, anything but discus!
  9. Because of their energy innefficency they're being banned? If they're worried about that they should be banning incandescent lights, not a less commonly used spectrum of flourescents. They seem to be at least as bright as the common ones, cool white? at a similar wattage too. Now, if they really want to save power they should disconnect Auckland from the power grid, then the rest of the country would have heaps of excess power.
  10. Then you need something that eats them.

    Feeder fish

Kill them then chop them in half so the oscar can eat them?
  12. Ok, I emailed him. I probably won't be able to make it, though. Got people coming over for dinner.
  13. One of many unanswerable questions like a few related ones, how can you call a bird that can't fly a bird? And why is the NZ airforce logo a bird that can't fly?(Though, it's appropriate)
  14. Anyone here know what's going on with it? I missed the last meeting, so I don't have a clue about it other than it's supposed to be Saturday.
  15. Well...It clouded up again. Was crystal clear like normal until the clouding started to get noticable about 5 hours later. Still there after doing my slave labor today. It's not as cloudy as it was after the previous water change, so maybe it'll stop doing it eventually?
  16. The bird grit is in a fine mesh bag in my 404. The cloudiness seems to be pretty uniform throughout the tank. Neither the tap water, the rainwater tank or my other 3 tanks are getting cloudy. I'm going to do a water change as soon as I can be bothered, maybe after I check my email and all the fish MBs. We'll see if it clouds up again.
  17. I wouldn't have a clue who to ask for a student. But, my father in law has a microscope. The cloudiness is clearing up, though. I'm going to do another waterchange tomorrow, we'll see what happens.
  18. Hmmm...Paramecia...No, I'm not going to buy a microscope to check! Don't tempt me! It'll take money away from my marine tank fund.(More like make it go negative)
  19. PH is 7.2ish, don't know the hardness, the new water is rainwater, PH 7 I didn't do anything with it in Christchurch because the tank was here at home. It just sat for 2 weeks without a water change. Other than that, like I said, no changes at all.
  20. It could be some of the grit has dissolved enough to change the composition of what's being released. It definitely doesn't have anything to do with low water tables, I'm on tank water.
  21. Hehehe, Nope, not bringing back chch water. Neither of the filters was overly dirty. I did notice that the bag of bird grit I'm using to keep the PH up when I was cleaning it makes the water pretty milky so it's a suspect, but...Odd that it would suddenly start making the water cloudy(If you look close you can actually see clouds in the water) and that it would seem to only do it after water changes. Oh, no changes within...Ummm...ages.
  22. Ever since I went to Christchurch a few weeks ago my 400L tank gets cloudy whenever I do a water change. It's annoying. I bought a bunch of filter wool and I'm going to try cleaning the filters and putting it in, they're a bit overdue anyway.
  23. The 03 spraybar is a straight swap. At least the 404 and 403 spraybars are, so I assume with the 204 and 203.

    Skimmers

But, you could skip the adding salt and the skimmer and just use the purifier, why add all the extra steps?
