    Do you name your fish?

I name mine. Usually they're more of descriptive names to identify them. My Surinams are big suit and little suit. Jurupari are big punk and little punk. Gold severums are big and little gold. Green Severum is Green. Green Terrors are Mr. Saum and Mrs Saum. My two Mystus cats are Mystus and Stripe. Redspot is Redspot. The Jewels are Stripe, Fork, Pawprint and uh, I forget. My Albino Pleco is Pirate because he's missing an eye. That's all the ones that have names.
  2. There's nothing saying they can't go rockpooling this sunday then the BBQ the next sunday.
  3. Those aren't guppies, those are leopardfish. Different species than guppies and ARE coldwater, unlike guppies.
  4. Where in Paraparararumumumu would be best to meet? I'm not particularly familiar with the area. PM me your cellphone number, just in case?
  5. My severums are, I don't see why angels can't be.
  6. I've read suggestions that you throw a few earthworms in with your whiteworm culture. It keeps the media stirred up and helps stop it from going bad. I don't think you'd have much problem with both together. The whiteworms, if you're feeding them constantly, tend to stay on the surface, I'd think the earthworms would tend to stay a bit deeper?
  7. Heh, I've had nightmare/dreams with my plecos and catfish crawling around livingroom floor. Then came the bit about fish in hamster balls...
  8. You really don't need more than an inch or two of compost, I don't think more will hurt though. Just dump them on top, they'll sort themselves out. I feed mine baby cereal. Seems to work well.
  9. It's possible, I suppose, but more likely it's a problem with the conditions in your tank. What species are they? A lot of fish's eggs are very sensitive to hardness and PH like, I think, angels?
  10. Great, Pies...Ask for pictures the day AFTER I give the camera back.

    Breeding houseflies

Somehow I suspect it'd end up my dead corpse being the maggot food if I tried that.

    Got a skimmer

Nope, top of the second cylinder is open to the air. Oh, and Reef, since you've been so wonderful and supportive of me trying to get into this hobby, I've got a little gift for you. Click here

    Got a skimmer

I closed off the air and noticed something wierd about the skimmer. The water goes up the center cylinder, falls out of it into the second where the water level is about 5-6" lower then it goes down afew more inches and around and back up the last cylinder, past the level of the second cylinder and out of the skimmer. What I don't get is...How the hell does the water level in the in the third cylinder go up past the water in the second? I can't figure out anything that would be sucking it up so you'd expect the water level to be even through all of them, it's totally out of balance! It's like magic!
  14. Your fish just aren't that bright.
  15. You know, if you stop feeding them every time you walk past the tank they eventually stop begging to be fed every time you walk past the tank. Mine usually only start begging about half an hour before dinner time.

    Breeding houseflies

Hmmm, Might not be worth it to drive out to your place every day for flies. Most of the flies that occasionally fly around here are too big anyway, I think.
  17. Anyone tried breeding houseflies? I'm thinking of trying it to feed my frogs. Not having much luck with fruit flies, thought maybe bigger houseflies would work. Anyone know what kind of media would work well? I was thinking I might try similar media as with fruit flies.

    Got a skimmer

    Haha, Oh no, it's contagious!
  19. If it's carbon dust it's not from the ceramic noodles. You should have rinsed them before using them. But, they shouldn't be giving off dust after a few minutes of use and that should be picked up by the filter and caught eventually.

I thought someone might be interested in a small update, Sorry, my mistake.

    Flat Worm

They're kinda pretty, actually. That's as long as I don't end up with any if I have you cycle some rock for me.
  22. That's what I was thinking, Warren. Pick up more glass shrimp and some hermit crabs. Andrew, I've been collecting my water from pukerua bay. Only made one trip for water so far though. There's a pullout right where the road meets the coast heading from wellington area. Seems like a fairly easy spot to get water. It can't be too far from where you guys are planning on going.

    Got a skimmer

It's still doing nothing, I can see some foam down the tube that goes up into the collection cup and occasionally a small blob of foam will get pushed by the airflow up into the cup, but that's it. Would the outflow water have any effect on the skimming? I've got it going through about 3 feet of hoses to get into the tank. And the instructions seem to say you should have absolutely no restriction. It's about as good as I can get it though. Actually, I could try and rig it up as a HOB, it's just a slight piping difference between the in sump and the HOB version of the berlin, as far as I can tell. That way the outlet could be going straight into the tank. I wonder what my chances are of buying the correct HOB pieces...
  24. Pukerua Bay...Hey, That's near me, isn't it? I'll have to see if I can meet you guys there then!
