  1. Just be patient, won't be long and you'll be wishing you only had 25 to deal with...
  2. Yeah, Lumens is a measurement of light and it's different from lux.
  3. Pros, you can fit it in a corner. Cons: Maybe they don't hold as much water as they appear to? May be pretty hard to get your hand to the back of the tank. That's all I can think of.

    Cichlid Tank

They'd be extremely unhappy in a 110 liter hex. There wouldn't be any swimming room at all for them once they start to grow. Maybe dwarf cichlids would be ok.

    Nitrate Poll

Most of my tanks seem to stay around the low end, 10 or less. But my big tank seems to be either 0 or 70ish when it comes to water change time.

It's some nice coarse sand...Or fine gravel. I haven't been able to find it anywhere again, I bought out the fish store I got it at because the owner said the place he gets it stopped selling it in bags and only sells by the ton now. Average grain size is about a millimeter, made up of a mix of tan to black grains with some clear grains and occasional other colors. Put it like that it sounds kinda ugly like your standard fruit salad gravel, but it's much nicer looking than that.

I put the bird grit in the cannister filter, not on the bottom of the tank.
  8. There's an animates and the lower hutt pet center in lower hutt. I think the melling station would be the closest one to those two. You'll find the animates easy enough, it's on the other side of the bridge. The other...Let's see...Over the bridge, straight at the first roundabout and second roundabout to the right of the motorcycle store and it's just before the animates. I'm horrible at giving directions.
  9. I've gotten to where I don't even bother vacuuming the gravel most of the time unless I see pleco poop floating around in the plants. If you have a chance, stop at Lamp specialists in Petone. They've got a better selection of screw in flouros than mitre 10. Might be better to get some higher kelvin ones and higher wattage ones. My personal preference I think the standard ones mitre 10 has will be too yellow. I'm not sure how the prices compare though...

    Cichlid Tank

What do you want the crushed coral for? Don't need it with a SA cichlid tank. That and I have no idea, I gave up and started buying bird grit to keep my PH up. Like $8 for a kilo.
  11. Heh, I was just looking at that about 2 minutes ago.
  12. Maybe it's a really aggressive fish and you don't want it with the rest of your fish, maybe it's deformed but you don't want to kill it for whatever reason you don't want it in your main tank. It doesn't have to be another display tank or have anything in it. It's just usually easiest to use a fish tank for it. Some people fill their sumps with plants and throw a light over it. Some are just totally empty with a heater in it. Some fill them up with media and sponges so there isn't any room for fish. Some people use them to breed live food that will then be dumped into the main tank, most common in marine setups but I don't see any reason you couldn't do something similar with FW. You could use it as space for throwing heaps of liverock or for corals in a marine tank. Space for heaps of crushed coral or similar for an african tank. Some people do combinations of the above. Ummmm...Basically you can do whatever you feel like with it and you can cover it up so it doesn't have to look pretty if you don't want.

I was going to say something along those lines, but then I couldn't think of any of those words. Brain block.

    Cichlid Tank

The big yellow one is a gold severum. Severums a good medium sized beginner fish I think. Very outgoing and piggy little bastards, don't share the food. Oh, and they're south americans, prefer a PH around 7, temp around 26 give or take a couple degrees. Not at all picky about it.
  15. Your pleco would eat lettuce and spinach if you feed it to the tinfoil barbs.

    Cichlid Tank

Depends on what kinds of cichlids you're talking about? Tanganyikan and malawi cichlids generally prefer 8ish PHs. The rest of the africans and south and central american cichlids generally prefer right around 7, discus prefer lower. So...Yeah, you need to be more specific. Saying "Cichlids prefer different PH from other fish" is about as specific as saying "fish prefer a different PH from other fish"
  17. In its most basic form, yeah, they're just smaller aquariums. Baffles and things are just a modification of that. Doesn't have to be an aquarium though. Could just be a big plastic bin or anything else that holds water.
  18. That's due to a an imbalance of the blood in your alcohol system.
  19. Corner tanks like that aren't extremely common, but they're not particularly rare. If it's 10 mm glass it should be just fine.
  20. Not this argument again. The 5 seconds is SHORT term memory. That's a totally different thing than long term memory which is what the clicker training would have been in. Long term memory is more of a physical rewiring of the brain. Like if I tell you my middle name, you'd probably forget it in a few minutes. That's short term memory. But your own middle name, that's in long term memory, you'll probably remember that until you get old and senile.
