Fees due now, just had AGM last Wednesday We will post details on that soon Shannon is new President, She's organising judging too so not 100% sure what the plan is, will ask her to clear any details up, we're having a committee meeting next week so info should flow from the proper channels very soon. Owen VP Waikato Aquarium Soc
  2. The crawl is open to anyone, competition is members only (New Financial year) I too would love to see your displays...maybe we could arrange a car load. Oh BTW Shannon has rehashed our judging sheets so it should give a better spread of scores.
  3. Hey all Club night Wednesday 7.00pm Waikato Commerce Club Collingwood Street Hamilton We are doing a session on live foods, bring any starter cultures you can spare and share the wiggly love. We also have something else up our sleeve for members only so come along and check it out. NO SALES TABLE THIS MONTH SORRY>>>NO TIME :tears:
  4. Ok folks due to v8's we are shifting the date till 30 April. Book it in. Owen
  5. Hi all, I'm currently setting up a plaudarium and am toying with introducing some amphibs or reps. Its basically a 5 footer with another section on top. As its gonna be housing tropical fish Its water temp will be approx 25degC and high humidity so I can grow cool plants (maybe even an orchid or two). I'm thinking frogs as all the lizards and gecko's are either too big, illegal or need lower humidity and i suspect newts will turn to fungus lumps at the higher temps. Any suggestions? Any quality livestock about? Whistlers or bell frogs? Any other choices?
  6. I have just been informed its the weekend of the V8's, getting around town will be fine, but if we have too many people not entering tanks or able to attend we may have to move the date. I'll keep you posted. Owen
  7. The date is set Sat 16 April Full entry details to follow We are having a (non fisho friendly)fun night after we get back to the club Enjoy the facilities (Waikato Commerce club) We invite other clubs to come visit , billets can be arranged We'd also like two out of town judges to put with ours, we have our own judging criteria so you dont need to be Certified or formaly trained, even someone who understands "composition" or something similar. We will make sure you are well looked after, so best plan to stay the night. If you are interested and want more info, email Rochelle and she will send you a flyer, our email is in the club section on the FNZAS website Owen
  8. Same bat time, same bat channel. Robs doing a segment on plants so its gonna be kewl. Also Table show category is male Guppies. See you there
  9. Have a similar issue. I have heard that it can take a long time before they get the hang of it, they are a long lived fish, remember patience is a virtue....unfortunately not one I possess.
  10. See you all there! bring your thinking caps for event proposals for the new year. Dont forget to register your breedings. Owen
  11. In regards to leaves in tanks...Oak is a pretty safe bet, also beech leaves are good. only get leaves from the autumn drop. This is because they pull all the sugars etc back into the tree ready to conserve energy during Winter, I read somewhere that you can get bacterial and algae blooms if you dry summer leaves. Also make sure they are well rinsed and then dried before adding, this will eliminate the greeblies. Same article also said not to boil leaves first.... It was an internet article written by a Park Ranger try googling it, it was short but had pretty good advice IMO. Nice work BTW guys
  12. I've been somewhat quiet on the forums front as I have been thoroughly shattered and burnt out of late. I have been pointed to this thread by an associate, I tried to read from the start but it so damm long! I lost momentum at page 10 and just skimmed the last few so I have a general gist of whats gone on here As this is a discussion dear to my heart, I'm gonna end my self imposed forum exile to make my comments and follow this from here on out. For the benefit of those who dont know me, I am the Pres of Waikato and VP of the Federation, all comments here are my own and in all likelyhood not those of either organisation. I have a habit of speaking my mind so here goes (sorry if it ends up as a rant) I am concerned about the industry, as it is clear those of you who are active on here are. It is good to see some action taking place, its been a long time coming and at last the Federation has a fish committee who are doing something. I've been down this path and been "told" by those who "know" that its a waste of time and "far too expensive". From hard personal experience...I have to agree with them if the usual recipe is followed: Step 1. Take 1 or 2 well meaning and energetic people Step 2. mix with 10 or 20 big mouthed blow hards who are all talk and no trousers Step 3. apply small amounts of private cash Step 4. shake well with swollen egos, political correctness and butt covering and stew for 6 months Step 5. Evaporate off Blow hards Step 6. Turn out on tray and.... Viola! 1 or 2 burnt out energetic people no money and a cloud of grumbling blowhards who blame it all on others. Harsh but true. The only way to get your goals achieved is by a concerted effort and actual team work. Dont faff about and for goodness sake if you promise something, follow through. To those well meaning energetic few, dont take on more than you can honestly handle, spread the load! If there really are serious people reading this thread then join up to the federation, its not perfect but despite its flaws it is democratic, open and crying out for energetic people. You can help those few people who aren't burnt out yet from dying completely. I have always held the belief that the Federation should be constantly in the ear of the relevant agencies but this takes co-ordination if its going to last. I am impatient, as are many of you non members, the fish committee with the oversight of Jennifer has the framework pretty much completed, It is my opinion that next year is critical, without new energy and many hands to undertake the field work we will simply trash another batch of well meaning and energetic people and leave them on the waste heap. I watch with interest Owen
  13. There will be another event coming up, just need to put my thinking cap on, and recover some lost time on my breeding.

  16. Finding the Commerce Club is easy, if you can find Wintec city campus on Collingwood st, carry on up the hill from the roundabout, its half way up on the left # 197, down a long drive, loads of parking. Give me a ring if anyone gets lost. 0274 938 936 Owen

  19. For those who don't read the club section, Waikato Aquarium Society are holding our tank crawl on Saturday, we will be following up with a buffet meal, a few cold beverages, and we are hosting a fun quiz night later that evening. For details check out the club section "invitation to event" post and my recent post re meal details etc. You dont have to be a member to play with us, come a long and see what we do. Maybe you thought fish clubs we were full of old smelly people wearing socks, sandals and cardies? Not here in Hamiltron !! 8)
  20. Hi all I need an indication of numbers for the kitchen so they can plan for our after crawl meal. We will be having a roast buffet at the club at 6.00pm. The meat will be chicken (as that should keep most folks happy) and there will be a dessert (crumble or a pavalova) Adults $18 Kids $12 The food is top notch, the bar is very well priced and there is snooker, pool and pokies etc for those that way inclined. Feel free to stick around and socialise with us even if you cant make the crawl or attend the quiz, we will be running photos from the day on a projector so everyone gets a second look. The quiz night kicks off about 7.15pm and we still have some places available, its teams so don't freak out about not knowing enough and there are plenty of questions and team activities even non-fish geeks can contribute. (Quiz not suitable for young kids) We expect we will be finished the quiz by 10.30pm. Please contact me by email or phone if you intend to have a meal, or want to grab a last minute seat at the quiz night. rochandowenAThotmailDOTcom 07 843 2227 0274 938 936 See you Saturday Owen
