  1. That would be great Caryl!!! He was such a cool dood!!! 8) I have got all the equipement to start on Longnose Larries nose!! He is a bird wrass with a growth on his nose, its getting hard for him to eat now. I saw Steve Erwin do surgery on a fish, so I got a few suppies from work and am going to attempt it. Clove oil to put him to sleep, marcain with adrenilin to numb the nose....then lop it off, plaster it with alovera gell, then put in a hospital tank to recover.....
  2. My most favorite fish in the world died yesterday...old age I think, he just started getting thin about two months ago but was still eating OK. I was told that there are no more Lawn Mower Blennies coming into NZ??? Is this true?? If it is , does anyone know where I could get another?? My tank will never be the same with out him!!! He use to sit in my hand and enjoy a tickle behind his ear....gill.....whatever.....
  3. When I was a little one, my mum was giving the two goldfish some medicine for white spot, she told me they were sick....when she turned her back, I had them both out into my dolls pram, put to bed...heads on the pillow....because they were sick!!! I am now a fish keeper and a nurse!!! They both died!!
  4. Vicky's set up is a dream!!!! Hang in there....
  5. realities of living SUCK!! as long as they do it quick, and non of the other horses see.....spose they have had a good life....it still sucks though!!
  6. what would cause the disease? Would it have been adding something to the tank which carried it, or was it in the water you added....???? What a shame for you. I couldn't even imagine what that would feel like!!!
  7. Thanks Sephew, that has made me feel alot better!! I did another water change today and a syphon....I'll test for nitrates tomorrow after work. My trickel filter was really dirty when I took the original one out....I will gradually take out the coarse filter "fibre" stuff and just fill it up with coral rock instead, I will have to keep the sand though, I have two little fish that keep us entertained for hours digging holes in it and spitting out the sand...the only issue I have now is my RO unit doesn't run well with low pressure, and the river has been in flood, so I only get half a bucket each time I try to use it....no humans are allowed to drink it either!!!! I shall look into putting a post on the wanted site for some caulupra, there are no locals here in Blenheim, so I shall have to have it posted from somewhere. Thanks for all the advice, its been really great....when Carol gets home from overseas I shall book a lesson on how to post photos!!!
  8. Yes I have a Deltect skimmer. The old sump had two trickle filters, so I got the sump made with just one, and made sure that it was easily cleaned...and the gap at the bottom big enough to syphen the gunk out. So, is it best to just fill up the sump with coral rock, and not have trickle?? Does anyone know where I can get some caulupra from??? I do have sand on the bottom of my display tank, I have a anenomi thingy whos body needs to be buried in the sand....I have built up the corner of the tank with rock so the sand is deeper here, I do syphen the sand every water change I do....the rest of the floor is covered with sand which is more that 1cm and less than 15...oh boy....what should I do now??
  9. I've made the sump and my good man helped me fit it in the cabinet.....we ended up having to cut the floor out as the original floor was made of custom wood!!! So now I have a new floor of marine ply with my new sump! :bounce: :bounce: I have a compartment for a refugrum???spelling...so now I am after the green stuff to go in it. I thought I might get some miracle mud I saw in Holliwood when I was there last....I have also got lots of coral rock which unfortunatly has been out of water for ages...now how do I get it "seeded" so that I don't get major changes in my water if I added it to the new sump. I used the orriginal media I had running in the trickle filter, which I still have running, I just extended the length of the whole sump....it looks great. Any advice from you experts out there??? I am having trouble with nitrates though still       .....and my soft corals suffer, my mushrooms and leathers don't do well. I have been changing about 280lt water every 2 weeks.....its a 700lt tank....I did one yesterday, and will do another tomorrow....see if I can crack it. My tank is really coming on great.. ..wish I knew how to post pictures ....
  10. Does anyone know the best place to get a sump made?? I've got the plan, someone near Chrischurch so I can pick it up. Thanks
  11. I've got a red banded shrimp in with him, I don't think it would be something that a cleaner shrimp would move....Thanks though.
  12. Good idea!! Think I will just leave him for now, hope it just drops off!!! The surgeon at work wasn't keen to have a go   and even talking to the vet, he wasn't keen either. We will just have to call him "Larry Big Nose" now!! Thanks for all the help. :bounce:
  13. My bird wrass, "Larry Long Nose" has a growth on his nose , it has been slowly growing. :-? Does anyone know who does surgery on fish??? It is not affecting his eating ability yet  , but I think it will soon. I could put him to sleep with clove oil, cut off the growth and see if he lives?? I wonder how you would promote healing, maybe keep him in a hospital tank with lots of alovera. Has anyone done this?? Poor Larry!!
  14. That sounds cool!! PM me your cell.
  15. That would be great Mikee, will let you know when I'm heading over. Let me know your cell number so I can get in touch.
  16. I will be in Auckland from the 4th Feb to th 8th, am wondering if there are any cool tanks I could look at in the area of Howick Pakuranga?? I'm in Blenheim and I am the only one here with SW!!! Any fish for sale??
  17. I have a wave maker and three power heads in there, its a 6ft tank. It does get white blotches on it. I will try to point one of the power head at it and see how it goes. I did have an issue with my puregen though, I chlorinated it and I noticed some of the coraline algea going white at the intake pipe...I fixed it quick with a massive water change and carbon....nothing else in the tank was affected though, but the leather was looking sad even before that. Thanks for the help.
  18. Might be, there is a small anenomea that is just above it in a crack in the rock, maybe that is anoying it? The galaxia hasn't alway been there, and to think back it has shrunk worse since it has....I never thought of that. I'll move it and see, it use to really big I did move all of the corals from another tank, but that was ages ago now. It did really well in the other tank.
  19. I still havnt worked out how to put photos on this!!! I have a web mail thing now so I will try and work it out,
  20. Its been shrinking for a couple of months really, I keep thinking it'll get better but in fact it is getting worse.
  21. My beautiful leather coral has been slowly shrinking, its head is now pointing down....all my hard corals are growing well, nitrates and phosphates down, feed them fuel. What else should I do?? My Zeneas ?? spelling....the pulsating coral doesn't seem to be as large and open as it is in other peoples tanks either....HELP
  22. I've got a Arcadia 3 series with 2 250w metal halide bulbs, 20k. also two tubes...? what they are. I've just been looking at Chemera's post of interesting sites to look at.
  23. I also have Nitrosorb is the sump with carbon and PhosGuard in my skimmer with Purigen as well. Who said this "sport" was expensive????
  24. thanks for that Chimera. 600lt tank , with two trickel filter sump, Deltec skimmer TS 1250. My parameters are Nitrate 10 calcuim 420 mag 1500 Phosphate .03 I don't have a calcium reactor, wouldn't know how one works...I add Reef Advantage Calcium, depending on my test results which I do every two weeks....I add it twice a week 25mls. Also add Reef builder 15mls 2x week, to raise alkalinity, and of course Magnesium 40mls 2x week. I also add Vibrance Fuel and Ions from Aquavitro, I have only just started adding this product, I use to use the seachem products. I use natural sea water which I do a regular +- 30% change every two weeks. I have quiet alot of current in the tank, I havn't worked out the volumes of what is being moved about, but my return pump is one of the big sizes eheim, the overflow pipe is quiet small and does abit of the sucking noises...but can live with that. I would love to see my corals doing really well, to the point of having a problem of having to prune!!! I wish!! Thanks for your help. Sally
