I currently have platys and swordtails in my tropical fish tank.. I'm looking at getting some different fish species but not really sure where to start. What fish are compatable with my existing fish that would be easy to care for? Cheers!

I was given a bristlenose catfish over a year ago, it has been living happily with my goldfish in a cold aquarium and has survived the cold winter that we've had, which i am amazed. Anyway, ive just set up a tropical aquarium and was wondering if it would survive a cycling tank? Or am I better off leaving it with the goldfish until the new tank is cycled? Cheers!

Im going to get some fish today. My tank has being running for a week now and water has cleared up. Do I need to do a water change before I add the fish? Sorry if this sounds like a silly question but i wanna make sure I get it right!

I have BN catfish and goldfish happily living together... have only had them over the summer months so far so have had no problems.. Im a little concerned about whether the tank will remain within temperature over the winter periods.. My house is generally warm over the winter months as I have a fire place in the living room (same room as my fish tank) and it gets quite hot! Although the fire is almost always going, it does cool down over night when i go to bed.. then i light it again in the morning to heat the house. Do you think my BN will be okay, even if it does cool down for a couple of hours.. or should i invest in a heater.. my tank is small so i'm worried about over heating the goldfish!

i have an aqua one 300F-LV Mini Internal Filter, only 3 months old. Just noticed today that it has stopped working, pulled it apart, cleaned everything out but still not responding.. anyone kno wat could be wrong? Or is it a repair job? Stupid me has lost the receipt, which i thought was with the box... Anywayz, if nothing can be done, can anyone recommend a good, reliable filter for my baby tank (25 litres) thats not going to cost the earth. Or is it better to get it fixed?

Do BN catfish eat these snails? I had 3 in my tank, and now there's only one left, both snail shells have been found with no snail inside!

I wouldnt know sorry, but funny you should ask. I went into a pet shop while in auckland and they were selling "cold water bristlenose catfish", they were twice the price as the other bristlenose catfish that were in another tank!

what's going on?? a week ago when i posted my tank it was cycling! Ammonia at 0, Nitrite 2.0, Nitrate 5.0. So I did a small water change, and the readings were the same. I've tested my tank today, as it's due for another water change, and the test results have baffled me!!! Ammonia risen to 0.50, and both nitrite and nitrate have dropped back to 0!! I dont use any chemicals or anything and haven't touched the filter media or anything.. so I'm a little confused!!

Thanks! I have only two, my tank is quite small so don't want to over crowd it! Do they eat the floating algae too? I have a little bit of that in my water as well, it's not as bad as it was, but the water still remains slightly green. I have an over confident goldfish who is always getting in the way of the BN and seems to enjoy algae wafers as well!

Need some advice on feeding BN catfish. How often should I be feeding them algae chips, courgettes etc? At the moment they seem happy munching away at the existing algae in the tank. Im going to buy a piece of bog wood at the pet shop this weekend, do I need to soak it first before putting in the tank? Will it sink straight away?

Oh okay, well I shouldnt have a problem then, the room temperature in my house gets pretty hot!

Cold as in unheated tank, tank without heater. My house stays pretty warm and is very hot during the summer months. I have a fire place, so in the winter the house stays toasty during most of the day.

for ammonia etc to appear in your tank while cycling?

Im glad too! nearly had a heart attack! we've had him for about 4 years now, would be kinda sad if we lost him!!
