I dont think halogen ballasts can provide the startup voltage needed for MH's You can get MH ballasts and fittings for around $170+ new.

If a heater breaks a heater breaks. Some of us do cold water changes also. I would still all ways recommend 2w of heating per L. Though i want to find a small good looking <40w heater for one of my tanks

Dont listen to the marks on the heater. Some of mine are set @30c and the tanks @ 22c :roll: Over kill is better. If you get a cold snap the heater will able to handle the air temp drop. I have a 1000w heater in a 270L and it wont cook my fish unless the thermo breaks

Yes. Id also dose a fert into the water. Well thats what most of us do.

Spot on Vinson You need 3 things for good growth. These are: CO2 or Flourish Excel(bio carbon) + Good lighting + A fert of some sort(PMDD)

Yes, if there is too much CO2 in the water they will suffocate. CO2 can also cause ph swings in water with low buffering properties

Over grown: With no stargrass and some other plants: Tanks getting stripped down on thurs and will have just glosso on the bottom 8) Aiming for a nice tight carpet with a bit of wood sticking out of it.

How long do you need it? Just keep it to a minimum. Make sure you have wire that can handle the heat output of the MH's or you will have a fire on your hands!
