I guess now Jetskie Steve will be famous. The first one to be banned on this site great to be recognised for something. I have obviously led a sheltered life.
Only got banned from the local swimming pool for doing bomb dives many years ago. For one day thats all
Go Steve
My rate is the same as yours Steve 0.16 hr. Has been fixed at that for the last year or so. Thought i was getting a good rate. Mind you they do give a early pay discount as well. Chimera turn on your oven if it is electric then watch the jump in price.
Looking good Ben. If you want value for money when buying a house you should move to New Plymouth. Also while you are out spending we need a marine shop here so set that up as well will ya.
thanks for the vote of confidence Chimera. What i will do is move the computer next to the tank then he will notice the tank once in a while in between games.
Thanks for the info guys.
I have two 250 halides and have just added some soft corals. Main reason for putting the lids on to reduce evaporation as i will be away for 5 weeks at a time so will intrust the tank upkeep to my teenage son. I will see how things go if i need to i can always install a auto top up.
cheers
I have had my marine tank set up for about two months now. I have decided to replace the glass lids to reduce the amount of evaporation. Is this a wise move or not. Who has lids on there tanks and who does not and why not. The temperature has not changed much but the evaporation rate has near stopped.
Mark
Fantastic tank Scuzza looks great. My tank looks very much like yours except it is half the size and does not have any fish or corals yet. It does have rock though and the tank is made of glass.
So some similarites anyway
I use twenty litre buckets. Tried the twenty litre plastic gerry cans but they are a pain to hold under the water and take ages to fill up. I also have a rope tied to the handle of the bucket so i can lower it into the water. Have bought a bilge pump so hope to get this set up so i can pump the water straight into a 200 ltr drum.
Thats the plan anyway. Just hope the pump is up to the job
I tried running a Laguna 7 as well. Drained my sump in about 20 seconds so have put it on hold for the moment until i get plumbing rearanged or may need to settle for something a little less powerfull.
The crabs are very much like the ones you find when you lift rocks at the rock pools. All are quite small and a pale brown colour. Lots of baby ones so no chance of removing all. Will just try to remove as many as possible.
Mark
Well put it this way my live rock has crabs. Question is do i need them or not? This rock has not been added to my tank as yet so do i try to remove as many of the little blighters or not.
Tks Mark
I have got black material on the back of all my tanks now. Easy to remove if i get sick of the colour. Plus i think it gives better depth to the tank. Mind you my frshwater tanks are heavily planted which helps. The marine tank i am setting up at the moment will be black material.
I bought some black material from spotlight and taped it to the back of the tank. Looks great and if i get bored with the colour i can easily change it.
Another awesome tank. All the more reason for me to convert from fresh water tropical to marine reef. If I can have a setup half as good as the ones being posted on this site I will be very happy.
Hey Billaney. If they are low quality sub standard pictures then i am never going to take another photo again in my life.
Nothing wrong them.

Over the many years I have kept fish and plants I had to combat blue green algae three times. I found the best method without resorting to chemicals was to do regular water changes and reduce the amount of light to the tank for a few days. Also as was mentioned in a previous post find out what caused the algae to grow in the first place.
Mine was due to over feeding the fish and adding to much plant food. Have not had a problem since sorting the feeding amount out. Also highly recommend having at least two Siamese algae eaters in to stop the other types of algae taking hold. Like most algae eaters though they will not touch blue-green algae
Great photos Caryl. Thanks for the effort, the Tawhiti museum looks great in the photos. Worth the visit.
Well done Mitch, Debbie and co, on organising a good weekend.
I think his real name is King Neptune not Alan. Its not a hat it is a crown.
I had a crown i mean a hat just like that one but as there can be only one king, Alan is the man.
I just brought a centameter of Genesis. This is designed to measure your electricity useage in cents an hour or Kw. I have a LCD screen that shows the temeperature and humidity as well as the cents per hour and Kw used My electricity bill has been to high for my likeing so decided to get something to measure it to see what is costing me the most. I have noticed through the day that the electricty cost and use per hour goes up quite a bit. In the morning it is at about 10 cents a hour and by the evening it is up to 35 cents a hour. It fluctuates quite a bit with all the tanks i have plus i guess the Fridge and hotwater cylinder. It really goes up when the stove is turned on. I will have to monitor it for a while to get more of a idea what is going on. I have set the LCD screen up beside my computer where my son spends most of his time hopeing he will go and turn off some of the lights or the TV when he sees the electricity useage going up.
Slim chance though. Maybe i could incorperate it into his computer games with a alarm
I brought some glossostigma last summer at our local garden centre here in New Plymouth. They had it sitting in a shallow tub with the leaves out of the water. Cost $12 for a large bunch. I have been growing it out side in a small pond. I tried to grow some in a tank inside but did not have much luck. It needs good lighting and fine substrate i believe.
Cheers Mark
