Again thankyou all for the info. At this stage my Son has swapped the timer with one of the old plastic pin jobbies and it is working for now. So when i get home in two weeks i will get a digital timer and relay setup up.
Thanks for the info all. I like the look of the HPM digital timer has anyone used it without a relay. It’s rated for 2400W MAX so wouldn’t this be more than enough without the relay. I have some experience with relays as my sump had a water level cut off switch for the pump that I burnt out three times until I had a relay installed. I guess this would be a similar thing when the lights turn on the initial power surge could overload the timer.
PS I’m not an electrician’s backside
Sounds like the digital timer with relay may be the go. Even on my freshwater tanks with the fluro lights the cheap timers crap out after a year or so.
What type of light timer do all you guys and gals use to turn your fish tank lights on and off. I am having trouble with the one I am using at the moment. I think I have lost one fish already due to the stress from the lights staying on all night. I work away from home quite a bit and my tank minders my children are having trouble with the light timer. I don’t know the brand name but it is the one that you recess black buttons around the dial edge for the time the light stays on. The other one I have used is the one with the plastic pins that you push in for the time you want the light to turn on or off. Both cheap in price so I guess you get what you pay for.
I would like to know what other options are out there that would be more reliable.
Cheers Mark
Hear what you are saying splendidus as i said in another post what gets me is my bill for two months a couple of years ago is what i pay monthly now. I dont have that much more stuff using the electricty either.
I dont think the 600 dollars is just for the tank power bill. My bill has gone up about 50$ a month since setting up a marine tank. What i have noticed is when i use to get the bill for electricty every second month it was about the same as what i am now paying monthly. Good old price increases.
I bought a anemone off Beachy a while back he was a bit worried as the day i picked it up it was not looking too good. I have not told hime yet but it split in two a few days later. So now i have two healthy anemones. Thats the trick just whisper in its ear its up for sale. Easy
My copperband cleaned up all my aiptasia and all the small fan worms. Now he cant resist having a go at my two feather dusters all day. They only get to open up at night. I have tried hiding them but to no avail so am thinking of covering them so he cant get at them. Any ideas on what to use.
Great photos. Love the butterfly fish as well. One question do any of the corals actually come into contact with the ones next to them. If so any problems
Just a word of warning if you have any seio pumps or power heads in the tank make sure to cover the intake with mesh or something so your anemone does not get turned into mince meat like mine did the other day.
JDM. For what it’s worth my second marine fish I bought about three months ago was a Copper band. I new this fish was recommended for experienced marine keepers but due to my apistasia infestation I hoped this fish would take care of the problem. Well I am pleased to say I have no apistasia left in my tank. After he or her cleaned up the fan worms he then started on the apistasia. Even though it looked like he was chewing on barbed wire he still kept eating the apistasia till it has all but gone.
Now I am feeding him blood worms frozen mysis shrimp and frozen brine shrimp. Because my tank had only chromis in it he was able to settle in to the tank a lot easier. What I have read about the copper band though it seams like it can be the luck of the draw if they will eat other foods.
If he did not eat I had planned to set up a small tank to selective feed him as Wasp has advised on this site.
This has turned into a very interesting topic as i think most of us have problems with condensation. I believe double glazing is the way to go when building a house especially in the colder parts of NZ. I will be looking into having one of these ventalation system installed in my house sometime soon. I have two underfloor gas heaters in the lounge and dining room and when these are used the comdensation is huge. Word is to have a window open but then all the heat escapes out the windows you are continually trying to keep the rooms warm by turning the thermostat higher.
My six cents worth

I have not had my aquarium running that long maybe six months or so. But have had the glass lids on from day one. Evaporation is very little maybe 5ltrs a week. Not sure what effect the lid has on blocking light but what few corals i have seem to be doing well. Actually the fresh water tank i have never needs topping up only water changes.
Still i get lots of condensation on the windows though especially when running the gas heating.
Fantastic Fay one brilliant marine aquarium. I love to see lots of different colour soft corals and mushies other than brown and green which my setup is mostly at the moment.
Thanks for sharing it with us
