  1. There are also 2 retail pet store outlets and several food stalls at the show. The Saturday Dinner and Auction is for FNZAS Members and a limited number of their guests. Hey everyone, where's all those entries. So far I've only got 17 fish entered. That means you'll get to look at 283 empty tanks! Come on, get those entries in lickety-split...
  2. Thanks Kim, I've added you to the list. Could someone from the Waikato, Kapi Mana and Marlborough clubs send through the names of people coming to the dinner please.
  3. It would be best to get the scientific name if possible. If you can't work out what it is yourself, try getting someone from your club to help. Post a photo in the forums to get it's id. We're here to help as much as we can... The judges are likely to disqualify any fish named incorrectly. We are expecting 300+ entries for the show. It is important for our tank layout that all fish are correctly named. It will reduce the last minute panic when trying to get all the fish into the correct tanks. If we get a fish with a name that is incorrect and can positively identify it we will try to adjust the tank layout to house it. If we have to shuffle too much we will have to either leave everything as-is or leave the fish out of the show. We want to have every tank full and all entries will be arranged by class. To shuffle one fish into a class where there will be no spare tanks will mean moving many fish. Then there is the paperwork to update. It's something we'd rather not do. You can see how important it is to correctly name your fish.
  4. Still only 17. A bit slow, but I guess everyone will send in their entires at the last minute so I get completely overloaded. Remember, Wed 22nd is the last day for registrations, I won't accept any more after that. So, make sure you're in early please.

  12. It's only a short drive for most people. It won't happen unless we all put in the effort. The Hawkes Bay Aquarium Society is doing a lot of work to make this a great show. Lets support them.

  15. Hey everyone, where are all the fish show entries! It's not going to be much of a show unless you enter it. To date I have entries for 15 fish. We've still got 24 days to go before the show but I'd rather have your entries sooner than later. The last National Fish show had 480 entries. I don't want to get all the entries in the last 2 days. Please get your entries to me as soon as you can...
  16. If you want your fish to be on display then yes, just mention on the form they are not for the show. If you are only going to auction them and don't need a place to put them then no. If the fish are small they should be ok in a bag for most of the weekend as long as you can keep them warm and bring an air supply. I would recommend putting them in the show or expo however. If they are good enough specimens to sell then they are good enough to put on display.
  17. Most filter sands are crushed to give them sharp edges. The sharp edge traps the dirt particles better. The reason this type of filter works well on pools is because the backflushing process cleans the muck out. The sharp edges may cause some problems with your fish and damage their mouths. If it is used as an undergravel filter, you might find it packs down too much and has too little water flow. If it is put at the bottom and normal gravel on top it will go stale unless you use a gravel cleaner. The gravel clear will mix the two layers up exposing the sharp stones...
  18. Possibly, talk to Midas about saving it as a MS Works spreadsheet. Only option at the moment is MS Excel...
  19. There will be more added over the next couple of days, but this kicks it off...
  20. Have finally added an info page on the FNZAS Homepage. The downloads aren't up yet but hopefully in a day or two... Here's the link, let me know if you spot any errors: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/496.0.html
  21. They are very common. They look like a grey guppy with a back dot in the middle of the fish. As previously stated, it's illegal to move them from the area they live in. The idea is to stop them spreading further than they already have. They are a very problematic fish. They get into a waterway and eat and kill everything else in it. Notice there aren't as many frogs about, good old Gambusia eat the tadpoles...
  22. That's it. Val uses up the calcium out of the water. Regular water changes are required to keep it healthy if your water is quite soft. You could try adding a bit of Calcium chloride to see if it helps...
  23. It's possible the Flourish Excel reacted with the calcium in the water and stripped it out. Val needs lots of calcium... The Flourish wouldn't have killed the plant as it's great stuff.
