I know youve probably looked online already... Just a thought though... http://www.fishdoc.co.uk/disease/diseasehome.htm Those are some handsome fish... what a shame! Shortee

ok .. hmm, Ive just put aquatic mix in my 75l tank with stones on top... with lots of plants that are growing happily... and was thinking about a bristlenose... so they dig lots and need softer sandy substrate - not so good for a planted tank then?

Im sorry I cant help Spider, but I do want to convey my sympathies, such big losses must be terrible for you! I hope someone can help you and your fish soon!! Best of luck, Shortee

Nice to see another cantab here... My teenage son and I have three tanks and he is new to the hobby... Ive had fish on and off for a few years (ahem quite a few yrs now!) Good luck with your tank... Best wishes, Shortee :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Dont you just hate days like that? I have done that myself, and my son nearly did that when we were doing a water change yesterday on our smaller tank... My paranoia leads me to keep a spare heater and filter on hand just in case  Im having one of those days today. Have just noticed in our new 74l tank that two of the neon tetras have a white spot here and there (fins and tail)... *sigh* So its time to roll up the sleeves and dig in I guess. What kind of plecos do you have chickiejo? Do you have other fish too? Hope everything gets back to *normal* again soon! Keep smiling, Shortee :bounce:

Really enjoy reading everyones posts and learning lots... Have now got two tanks going - planted and cycled successfully (so far!) with orange platies, guppies and neons & glowlightss in one, albino corys (Charles, Diana and Rodney) and guppy fry in the other... and number three tank in the making - a 74l tank that I hope to have something different in... kuhlis or something that isnt a livebearer :-) Cheers & Happy Fishing, Shortee

Did you see the freshwater puffer on trademe for sale this week? ... Dont know if youre still looking or not? Best Fishes Shortee -
Thanks Keri Anne - I will, because Im hoping that we can breed (just for ourselves, not to sell or anything) as true as possible. I wondered about it being a weakness, it looked really wrong... and I felt like she might have been suffering. I got her when she was heavily pregnant, so I dont know what she looked like beforehand. No others seem to have that problem, but if they come from the same place, they might have the same genetic tendency in their fry could they? Thanks for your help, Take care Shortee

We lost the big girl today , so I guess having babies was rougher for her than the others... and I think she may have been older than first thought too, she was by far the larger of the seven preggie girls we got. Still, we are learning lots, and have a tank of little guppy fry to watch. Got some java moss today for them to hide in and I have to say WE LOVE ORGANISM!!! We got some wee algae eaters too who never sit still! Theyre awesome... so busy! Thanks all Shortee :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

I got replacements yesterday at LFS - 6 in a pack for around $10 which is great... Thankyou everyone for your comments ... Now back to Fishing Shortee :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

For your replies, Im truly grateful for your advice and imput, this fish breeding thing gets trickier by the minute! So, we have this girl with the bent tail - will she live happily ever after and continue to breed bent tailed fry or normal ones... or will she pass to the big fish bowl in the sky? Cheers Shortee

Hi folks, We recently purchased some guppies off trademe - five large pregnant guppies. One died, the others seem fine. The last of them gave birth today, but is left with a very bad tail droop/hunch back. She is the biggest of them, a lovely coppery colour with black from her waist (such as it is) to her back fin... Is this something we can fix, or is it going to be the end of her? ... Ive looked on google and it mentions inbreeding as one thing that may cause this, or a permanent droop but continuing sustained health after giving birth... Any of your experiences and advice gratefully accepted, Best wishes Shortee

Thankyou for your reply , Im not sure but here goes... the filter is a waterfall type that hangs off the back of the tank, suitable for our small community tank of 32litres. It has a very small filter thingie that fits inside and it has a spongy plate inside and ... well the water is not so much going through it as around it. Can you clean them out and recycle, or is it easier and more appropriate to replace it ? I hope that makes more sense Thanks again Shortee... who is learning lots today!

Anyone in Christchurch know where I can find replacement parts for these wee filters or can I adapt filter wool to fit the inner filter panel thingie whatsit ...? Advice greatly appreciated, Kind Regards Shortee

Newbie question about Glowlight tetras and breeding
1familiarfish replied to 1familiarfish's topic in Freshwater
Thanks Caryl... Will get some of that organised. :bounce: Have just found a site that recommends separating the males from the females then putting them back together again so they will spawn... and feeding them on live food... Will try that and see how they go. Thanks again for all the advice... Shortee :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: -
Newbie question about Glowlight tetras and breeding
1familiarfish replied to 1familiarfish's topic in Freshwater
Thanks for such quick replies... More questions... weve just found two tetras with definite signs of eggs, we can see their bulges in the shape of eggs --- What is green water please? Do I purchase it, or make it somehow. Fairly resourceful here, we have extra tanks when we need one for tiny fry - will breeding grass be ok? How many babies do they have? ... Time to be googling to see what I can find too, we didnt think theyd breed (doh!), weve only had them a month and the glowlights are just tiny themselves. Again, many thanks for the information and advice! Greatly appreciated, Shortee -
Can someone tell me please, are these dear wee fellas supposed to get err rather round before laying eggs? Ive never had egg laying fish before (they ARE egg layers arent they?) , only live bearers, so have no point of reference... We have six glowlights and two of them have big tummies... Any advice etc would be welcome, Thankyou in advance for your fishy wisdom, Shortee

Thankyou for that... I also saw the most amazing fish stock and set up at Organism, that shop is my all time FAVOURITE shop for fishies... Im still building up my tank, I got a new one for just me, so my son can have his live bearers (guppies/platies who have just had fry! YAY!) and I can do something else with mine... except Im not sure what to put with Kuhlis... Do cichlids like them? On another note, how often does the Totally Tanked club meet plze ...? Age restrictions? My 13 yo son is interested in joining... Cheers, Hope everyone is having a great week! Shortee :bounce:

Thankyou for the friendly welcomes... We are on the hunt for a new tank, so I think the bug has hit hard. Duncan saw Kuhli loaches last night on a website - can you still buy these in NZ?, I havent seen any in CHCH of late - and believe me, I have been to every shop that sells fish in the greater CHCH area *sigh* Ive never gone beyond livebearers before, except for neons, so I think we need a challenge Have a happy day all!
