  4. Hi all Oli's dad here. We are building a skimmer with a 100mm diameter column 1600mm high We want to use an air stone to aerate the water to about 20% air to water-air mix. With many small bubbles under 1mm dia. As I dont know the speed at which a bubble rizes in the water column and I dont know how to allow for air stone restrictions or water head pressure in the air flow calcs I dont know how to size the air pump. Does any body have any good ideas. In case you are wondering why I want to try airstones I want to be able to control a low water flow through the skimmer separately to the air flow. To keep turbulance down and aeration at the correct level. Thanks for all your help
  5. I am Mario. I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble. (If you were not Mario you would be a Light Cycle.)
  6. We are planning a trip to christchurch this week. I would like to visit some shops and see some marine fish. Where are the best places to go. Thanks
  7. please cheack this out and tell me your opinions on whether this is a good idea for my new aquirium http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q276/gudluckinlum/Tanksystemlayout-1.jpg These are the things the layout needs to be good for: I want to start with fish only in a tank with live coral rock on a coral sand bed. The coral sand we have is a coarse mix of shell and coral. I want to start with a system we can upgrade to corals when Dad and I are happy we can keep a stable tank running. Dad and I can build this set up but we dont know what we are doing. We have read lots of books. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a reverse flow gravel bed? What are the advantages and disadvantages of an area of stagnent sand for anerobic bacteria growth? should we grow algae in the sump with the deep sand bed? Do we need lights for this? Is hydrogen sulfide build up a risk in this situation? any other ideas? Thanks Oliver
  8. is hot glue safe to use and would it be strong enougth to hold the coral/rock on top of each other?
