ok I never realised that I was curious cause I had my tank turn green right before my eyes a few months ago.. triggered by a water change. It actually clouded up as a poured the water in.. and its been green for months. Its clearing now.. but we've had some rain so the water level may have gone up a tad!

yeah maybe find a freight company who will pack it for you and insure it. Cheaper than hiring a bigger car !! Actually.. hang on.. you have a truck.. dunno what your local 'dump/recycling' situation its there.. but at transfer stations here they have a recycling depot and they accept cardboard.. I'm sure you could pick some up for free if there was something similar there.. take as much as yo uneed and cut/tape it to size... the more layers the better!! THEN you can probably wrap it and wedge it without too much trouble!

Are you on a bore or town supply Caryl?
-
Can fleas live without a host? You can buy powders/non-aeresol sprays I think to treat areas individually. Try a pet store or do a search online.

Planted? I imagine it will have cycled like any other tank, so ammonia and nitrite should go to zero (the surfaces all house the same bacteria as filters would just not as much of it) But without plants I'd expect you'd have some nitrate....you could experiment though and not do any water changes till you detected some. Dunno how sensitive those kits are. Maybe the native fish are not big polluters? I have a barrel and a tub with plenty of fish in them. Neither has any water movement or filtration but the nitrates are zero thanks to the plants. I water change when I can be bothered. (and my bore water tests at 10ppm nitrates so even when I do w/c I'm actually adding nitrate!)

Could it be a water quality thing too? ie: the cheap stuff may contain stuff that might foul the water more quickly? example: I have some godfish in a bathtub. I was feeding JBL Pond vario. Fish were healthy. water was crystal clear. Ran out of jbl, started feeding cheap red pellets.. water was green inside a week!

how about a very large chillybin? should help keep the temp level...and would be nice and strong. Maybe lined with a large bag of sorts to be sure there's nothing offensive (ie: residue etc?) What about oxygen though? will a bin with a lid be a problem? I guess 5 hours isn't too long. Would some ammo-lock in the transport bin be an idea?

My white clouds go up to the top when the lights are out.. I think it's their 'resting spot' .. like bed/nap time.

Try an experiment if you're not sure.... put something in the tank that will move depending on the flow.. like a leaf off one of your plants (if you have any.. or soemthing that will float to some degree) and put it near where you're trying to figure out the current.. let it go and see where it goes and how fast. Do you know about undergravel filters? They use air to basically move the water around....the fact the bubbles are moving the water upwards, means that some flow is also being created as the bubbles go up. In an undergravel filter.. they use an uplift tube.. which means the bubbles HAVE to go up through the tube....lifting up the water in the process whch creates a bit of a vacuum (think if the water is rising.. it has to be making up for the pressure by moving the water somewhere else) I'll give you an example.. I ran an airstone in a bucket once and put a fish in there.. I had to turn it down HEAPS cause it created alot of current/movement in the bucket (not just at the surface). ie: turbulence Think too about blowing bubbles into milk or something through a straw .. you blow the bubbles downwards.. but they come back up at the top of the drink.. that means they went down the straw and came all the way back up again.. which means they had to move some of the drink around on the way up right? Air stone is the same as blowing bubbles re: your hang on filter.. If the water DROPS (like a waterfall) from the filter into your tank then you'd be getting better aeration than if it comes out at about the same level as your tank water. But you'l still be getting som eaeration because the water at the surface will be moving some. Hows about you tell us what your concern is? Then we can decide properly if we want to come all the way up there to the cold and kill you !!

Keep us posted as it grows in! Hey.. if you're interested in a cheap backing option that you can cut to size you can buy some poster board (stiff poster paper) from whitcoulls or paper plus.. you get a pretty big sheet for just over $2 and it comes in a heap of colours. I'm using black stuff for the back of my bigger tank. I just have to be careful not to get it wet but on a small tank that should be easy. you can probably just tape it on or use blu-tack or something

Would you recommend I take him out and treat it Alan? If so what with? I'd sooner treat it early than wait if it may help. Furan? I'd probably have to treat it in a bucket, I can chuck an airpump/improvised filter in there and he won't need a heater.

Thanks adodge, I was hoping injury was a possibility. the eye is not cloudy at all.. just pushed out some. The fish have been a bit rowdy lately, spawning I guess. It's well and behaving normally and eating fine so I'll just keep the water clean and keep an eye on it rather than treating.
-
Sigh.. another problem.... one of my flagfish has popeye (one eye only). Is this always caused by a bacterial infection or can it be from an injury? What's the treatment and can I treat it separately or do I have to treat the tank? (or should I keep up the water changes and wait and see?) Tanks is about 80L and I'm changing 20/week.. although I do have a green water problem which has been hanging around for months now which I can't seem to beat!! This particular tank has been nothing but trouble for me actually I'm very frustrated with it! Tank isn't overstocked, its got 3 jordanellas, 8 wcmm and 2 baby BN's.

Hey folks, One of my suckers has been acting a little oddly the last couple of days. It's deeper than usual in the pit that he(?) has dug for himself under a large flat rock. I did a big water change yesterday and normally afterwards both of the suckers chase around the galss and rocks etc etc...but this one didn't come out at all. I 'teased' it out with a little plastic stick this morning (just gently). At first when I put the stick near it, he tried to 'scare' it off like he was defending his ground...he eventually came out (I wanted to get a good look at him to see if he looked well.. I wasn't being cruel).. but only for a few seconds and went straight back underneath. His colour was all good and everything seemed normal.. they do go pale when they get stressed I think. Could they be breeding? I have 2 but I would only be guessing if I tried to sex them. I would say that if I WAS to guess.. I'd think the hiding one would be male.. he has more colour in his dorsal fin and he's generally more of a showoff/poser than the other !! I know some types of fish dig pits and then guard their eggs but I can't find any actual references to breeding borneo suckers. What else could be going on?

Congratulations djay :bounce:

Sounds to me like you've expaned your 'operations' over the last year.. more fish and more tanks means more problems too.. but hey it sounds like you're dealing with them very well! Hang in there

 ( now have the image in my head of the crusty old bugger in the DB ad who's severely dehydrated!) "We'll make a human chain!" (sorry.. off topic I know!!)

Is the tank glass? Dont' use a scrubbing pad on acrylic (Are you tigger on the lsb forum too? If you don't know what lsb is then I guess it's not you!!) re: the salt - in addition to some bugs dropping off with production of a new slime coat.. yes I do think that there are some freshwater parasites that cannot handle the salt and it kills them.. SOME .. not all!! I believe I've read somewhere that saltwater fish can sometimes be dipped in freshwater to the same reasons...but then wheter you can believe everything you read is a different story!

oh poo! That' not nice.. she could have told you beforehand!!
-
Aww... whata shame! After all the attention you've given her she couldn't even be botherd to drop while you were around huh! Never mind.. at least she's well which means there will be a 'next' time

I only ask for things I wouldn' t get any fun out of buying for myself Asking for paper for valentines day was a bit of a joke.. I have a reputation for being overly practical, and I figured.. he'd laugh me out of the room if I asked for flowers or something sentimental (The other running joke is that the other half is a terrible tightwad !! Only when it doesn't count though!!) I asked if I could have a valentine present.. he said no.. I did a bit of pretend begging.. he said "what would you be asking for".. I said printer paper and he laughed (as well as breathed a sigh of relief as he soon realised I was pulling his leg!)
-
no.. we don't celebrate it either.. it was just an excuse for a post I did ask my other half to buy me a ream of printer paper with valentines day as an excuse.. but he refused even that I laughed and said it was just as well.. it would spoil all my fun if I got everything I asked for when I asked for it and I'd lose my opportunity to once in a while pretend I was so hard done by !!

Thanks Matthew. I started treatment with wunder cure yesterday after finding another post (through the search) that said they had used it on their fish but basically your post reassured me that they should be ok with some meds which is why I went looking to see if anyone had used the Wunder cure. I had used the wunder cure in that tank before so I was more comfortable with it being a 'known quanitity' with their tankmates. All the fish are coping fine including the BN's. (and the month old fry I have in there)
-
Can I used meds with bristlenoses? I have both some white spot cure and some wunder cure, I also have sea salt or can consider upping the temp. What do you advise? the BN's seem unaffected as yet, I think its early stage so want to start treatment asap! Help!
