  1. Has anyone seen the three tanks with killies at HFF. If so are the killies with black and white stripes clown killies or are they something different. It was my understanding that killies jump - do they or do they not. I noticed none of their tanks had lids on.
  2. Thanks kiwiplymouth - I started to wonder what was happening as they also have starlight bn in the store as well and these spotted bn were a lot smaller. There are some other plecs that I really liked the look of and another that I have never heard of before (sounded something like nicu.....) but I couldn't see it in the tank.
  3. weeellll, one was to see what they had and there are a lot more types of fish in store that I haven't seen before than just this import and mention to hubby that there were fish in store that normally aren't in NZ second was to have another look and this time tell hubby how really nice they were and how I had some empty tanks (and show him the empty tanks), and mention again that they normally aren't in NZ and third time was to buuuuyyyyy them!! :bounce: Given that we have just purchased and had a new spa pool installed...
  4. They were $39.95 each. I was told they get to about 10cm which given that my tanks aren't that big is a suitable size for me. There were also some spotted bn in the shop. Any ideas as to what these would be.
  5. ugly?????
  6. yes with a bit of effort. I was going to get some but thought they would go up my intank valve. They've got a really good range of corys in, they've even three types of killies as well, in fact there seems to be a good range of all fish in at the Mt Roskill branch, not sure about the other ones. The banded knife fish is really really nice and I don't normally even like them.
  7. let me know how it works out please
  8. Went into HFF today (after two visits yesterday lol!) and purchased three of the Pretty pekoltia so here are the pics. Opinions welcome and expected! They also have a wider range of other plecs/panaques than I have ever seen before and I was pretty keen to get some others. Looks like I'm going to have to get me some bigger tanks in 2010

    Limestone

Try Stone & Water World in Ellerslie or alternatively one of the garden centres (use the yellow pages and save your petrol and time!)
  10. I haven't got one myself but have thought about it however I have spoken to several people who have and the feedback varies (as one would expect) - hard to keep clean - filter system not great - looks really nice for displaying fish imo the biggest issue and one that I have had before (with my setup) is that if one fish catches something the rest are also exposed to it.
  11. you sure theres no bn babies in there as well ? most unusual imo for a bn to attack
  12. dwarf sag (you would have to ask alanmin the proper name for it as I got it off him - It is pretty fast growing in the tank, I started off with about 15 small plants at the beginning of winter which is not a good time of the year and it has pretty much covered the tank even with bits being taken out and given away.
  13. In the top pic no 6 is hiding behind the blue snakeskin (you can just see the tail of it) and in the bottom pic the white diamond is in the half of the tank I didn't photograph. This tank is 450 litres and I run 3 very basic tubes for lights. Wanting to get T5 after Christmas. The tank is 2 years old mid Jan 2010. Tank needs a really good clean up and filter needs cleaning as well I think. My job after I finish for the year at the end of this week. Even with 6 (2 confirmed pairs and 2 oddballs) a fair bit of fighting goes on between the males who have their own females. The other two whose sex I do not know referee the fights
  14. mines just my first initial a (Adrienne) and dodge (my surname). Given that my location is Epsom its not hard to find me in the phone book if people think about it!
  15. you may find that when another fish is added that the new one won't be so shy. If the fish has been in a tank with dirty algae covered glass it won't be as used to movement and lights.
  16. Black beard algae dies off with regular florish excel dosing as on the bottle. Heres a couple of pics of my tank which also needs a good glass clean. The flecks are air bubbles as I also run an air hose in the tank.
  17. I'd only do a maximum of 4 discus if you wish to increase from the two as otherwise if you want to add any other fish you will need to upgrade the filter. I have cardinals, rummynose, hatchets, sterbais and fancy plecs in my tank and they look good. Other fish that cope with the temps are bn & harlequins. You could add some driftwood and contrasting plants. I currently have red pine, indian? fern, swords and dwarf sag, all of which are doing well without great lighting, with jbl balls added and flourish excel to keep the algae under check. Val looks good as well but doesn't like a lot of excel added.
  18. If you think the reason the tank dropped to 28 was because you unplugged your heater, then maybe the heater is faulty. I still tend to go with the hot weather theory.
  19. Unfortunately its the weather up here, not a faulty heater or anything else. My discus tank, in the house, sits at 28 in the winter and in the last week has hit 30 -32 degrees during the day. Suggest you leave the lights off as much as you can and run a fan in the room, let as much cooling breeze get in as well. The outside temperature yesterday was 26 degrees. I also did a 200 litre water change yesterday, my tank remained at 30, but remember in the summer the pipes are not as cool as they are in the winter so the water is not really really cold. By the way my tank is 30 degrees atm.
  20. Christmas at my sister in laws - about 16 of us ranging in age from 16 - 81. 5 nights in Waiheke Island from 9-15 Jan and then I'm back to work. No Chrissy pressie for me this year as we had a month in Europe and have now purchased a 6 person spa pool which arrives next week. Tinytawny - I have pm'd you.
  21. He's a nice looking boy Sam, I think I have seen your other photo of him (hm?) and Nick your female looks very nice. What tail type is she?
  22. I find that in general is it very hard to see fry for the first couple of weeks and that there are often more in the tank than you think.
