it may well be some kind of parasitic infection, any chance of a photo?
  3. looks like a great start, what kind of filtration will this system have running?
  4. Hi Caryl That would be great thanks.
  5. hi all im writing an article on nz natives for Aquarium World and wondering if anyone has good clear pics i can use....any help will be much appreciated
  6. YES that is a LOT! The stream is unusual in national terms because of species found in it. A downstream gabion basket prevents exotics from entering the stream... I would say this site is of national significance!
  7. The following species can be found in the Orokonui Stream: Short-fin eel, Anguilla australis Long-fin eel, Anguilla dieffenbachia Lamprey, Geotria australis Common bully, Gobiomorphus cotidianus Giant bully, Gobiomorphous gobioides Red-fin bully, Gobiomorphus huttoni Blue-gilled bully, Gobiomorphus hubbsi Inanga, Galaxias maculatus Koaro, Galaxias brevipinnis Banded kokopu, Galaxias fasciatus Giant kokopu, Galaxias argenteus Common smelt, Retropinna retropinna Koura, Paranephrops zelandicus
  8. Not a problem! Anything that promotes our beautiful natives is all good...and yea the visitor centre will surely be looking for merchandise.

    Worms

THey are good key indicators of over feeding. They help eat up left over food too. They only get out of control when conditions arent ideal in a tank. If tank conditions are great, you wont even notice them.
  14. I don’t have a problem with others keeping fish, whether wild caught or not. I do however have a problem with people who don’t consider where their animals come from (or the impact of removing them from their natural habitat). Yes I think more people in the aquarium hobby should be aware of such issues, it leads to a much deeper and more enjoyable hobby experience.
  15. Good article however one also needs to consider the ethical implications of keeping marine tanks considering the negative effect the aquarium trade has on wild caught species and their natural habitat.
  16. no not safe. use aquarium grade silicon
  17. melafix can only do so much. i generally only use it for newly transfered fish etc. When i see symptoms of bacterial infections and fish death more agressive treatments are a good idea.
  18. i would suggest a full treatment of furan.
  19. theres nothing wrong with using 2 50w heaters, however in a small tank such as this one, it means even less space for fish! 1 100w heater takes up less space than 2 50w heaters. what if's is always a risk. what if the power cuts out? what if both heaters fail? what if...
  20. Im in Dunedin also. It sure is cold! I would suggest upgrading to a 100w heater. That will do the trick. 50w heaters by themselves are useless for most applications.

    Brown algae?

this usually occurs in new setups, it will most likely go away after a few weeks or so, also could be the result of high silica from new gravel or rocks.
