  1. Hi si_sphinx. Not sure but they could be female Kenyi or Juvinille Male kenyi. Could you take a closer picture?
  2. Hi si_sphinx. Personally, Ive never encountered to much aggression at all with my giraffes. I have some "large" ones as well as smaller ones in varying sized tanks and they are quite peaceful. You do however have to watch how big they get in comparisson to their tank mates (food cycle)
  3. Hi Slightly Blue Dalmation. My wifes breeding these guys at the moment and has fry but they are only 1 cm in length. Shes got quite a few of them. Will be a wee bit off before they are ready to go. Let me know if youre interested.
  4. Hi Lynn. Finally got hold of the guy that I passed the 2 male Haps onto. Unfortunately........ he had a tank failure some time back and the 2 boys perished along with all the other fish. I will ask around and see what I can dig up.
  5. Hey Paul. Tanks looking good.
  6. I think your red empresses are a little young to start breeding yet
  7. Clown Loaches and Bristle nose in combination do a great job. Bristles sort out the algae while the Loaches get rid if excess food waste etc.
  8. Alanmin4304. Im sorry but cant keep quiet on this one. What you have stated is not always the case. Sometimes fish are not always readilly available or people are getting out of certain species. Hence its pretty unfair to state the breeding pair has been "Bred to death" or are "no bloody good". IMO, a breeding pair should have hatched lived babies hence rules out infertile eggs etc.
  9. Thanks for the contact details cichlid7. Much appreciated
  10. Hi Guys. Does anybody have contact details for Origin Aquatics? Failing that, anybody know where I can get a good deal on a couple of Fluval FX5's?
  11. Heaps of different Malawis as well as Frontosa's. Seem to be hooked on African Cichlids!
  12. Hi there, I have a brand new container of Aquarium Science Aqua Tonic. Can anybody please tell me what this is used for? It says it is a general water conditioner. thanks

    Missing fry

Sure is amazing where they end up! I did some maintenance on one of my external filters a while back and found five happily living in the area between the base and bottom tray! Felt really guilty cause I hadn't cleaned the filter for 3 months and Hadnt had that breed of adult in the tank for over 2 months!!

    ID Please

Hi Mike. At tis stage Ive got to agree with you. The latest AB that came in about 3 months ago are nowhere as good as the one that you have. Got to admit though that smidleys fish does look like an AB  ! This raises the question though, have the fish been mixed as jacobs and AB's came in at the same time. A collegue of mine also has AB's that came in at the same time as mine but his look quite different already :-?
  15. Hi there. I think you will find that the Latin name for these guys is Labidochromis Exasperatus. Below is a good link for them. http://cichlidae.com/article.php?id=149 Female stays the pearl colour while the male changs to a light blue as it matures. Hope this helps
  16. Sweet. Thanks for that. Think I will give it a go.
  17. Hi guys. Does anyone have air stones in their tanks with Frontosa's? Ive just set up a large tank and wanted to "liven it up a bit" with some airstones. Im pretty sure I read that it wasn't recommended but no longer can find the article. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated. thanks
  18. Hi Ian. I think your right with your thoughts. Ive just done some tests on another 1 of my tanks and have found the dials of the new heaters are quite a lot out. Ive turned them down and will wait and see. Thanks for your input.

    Buying Malawis?

Jansens Mt Eden is always worth a look as well. Pretty knowledgeable and usually have a decent supply. Like previously mentioned though, there are a few good people up there that always seem to have Malawi's for sale.
  20. Hi Ian. thats what I thought but its not working out like that. Both thermostats have been set at 26 degrees however the water temp in the main tank is up to 29 degrees. Heaters seem to be on all the time. Temp started at 22 degrees on Saturday evening (when it was first filled) and has cntinued to rise.
  21. Hi All. have finally got my 8ft tank up and running. Im running twin 200litre sumps with a 300w heater in each however Im having a problem with getting the temperature right. Anybody able to supply suggestions. thanks
  22. Nice fish!! Hey Andrew. 1 of my Red Emps is carrying!!!!! Waiting, waiting waiting
  23. I used to have a couple in a brackish water tank back in Auckland. like previously mentioned though, dont put them with puffers cause they wont last long. Havn't seen much in the way of them lately but holywood fish farm used to get them in. Im pretty sure they were around the $50 mark

    Invisable fish

Tank mates will definitely give these guys more of a "Comfort level". I have a couple of pairs in with my fish and they are always visible and friendly as (could be saftey in numbers). How big are the fish iny our 4 ft tank. If they are around the same size perhaps you should move them back if they were happier or like previously mentioned, add some compatible tank mates. Its worth while persevering cause they are great fish with neat personalites. good luck
