I have now built my stand although i think i may give it a few cosmetic touches this weekend before i set the tank up. I am going to get some of that aquatic mix, and my driftwood has been soaking for a week. do i let the substrate and water settle for a few days or do i plant it at the same time?

i picked up some from haughton bay, and it is soaking outside. Will it be ok? If it isnt, could you tell me if you find some cos i need some to.

Hey guys i have just got a new tank, 1000mm X 500mm, which is just the right size for me at the mo, i would like bigger but until we move and i stop being a student this will do. :lol: Went to bunnings today to buy wood coz i am building a stand. Hopefully getting that finished but next weekend and i will start to set it up then. I want to do a planted tank so any suggestions for setup would be appreciated, i am a bit unsure as to what substrate to use... So my octagonal tank will be up for sale in a couple of weeks if anyone wants it. But yay, now i get 250 litres to play with!

try treated plywood, its bout the same price, its what im using.

i read somewhere that it may leech iron, but isnt iron good for plants anyway? Guess it just cant be enough to hurt the fish

does anyone know if it is safe to put volcanic rock in fish tanks? You know like the red stuff. I saw a pic and it had it and it looked really cool. My mum lives in Rotorua so i thought if it was ok it would be a cool addition to my tank.

My male honey gourami was blowing bubble nests when he was in the community tank but now that i have moved him into a smaller tank he isnt interested. Her has been there for a week and i have tried putting a female in, and in in a breeding trap. As far as i can tell everything is all right as far as breeding condtions go. He does sit mith his mouth up towards the surface but no bubbles. Any ideas??? :-?

Does the tank need to be cycled after it it setup? What if you bag the filter and keep it nice and wet? And also keep the gravel wet? What if i get one of those big water containers and keep some of the water?

thanks that was my line of thought to ive got a blanket wrapped around it, especially overnight. hope that will do the trick...

seems to be fine now so maybe it was just having a bit of trouble getting the temp up. i did fill it with cold water.

slightly off topic but what about dwarfs and honey gouramis together?

25w heater in a 13L tank. theres nothing in the tank so i have just put some warm water to get it up to temp. i will see if it can hold it. it is putting out a bit of heat.

now i seem to have a problem with my heater... I have turned it right up to 34 degrees but the temperature hasnt made it over 20. is this just because its cold and its a little tank or is there a problem with my heater??? It hasnt been used for about a month but it was fine whe i last used it.

yeah it is in plastic, it came with the tank. I can screw the plastic bit off though, would that be better?

i have a filter like this which came with my little tank... Is this what you mean by sponge filter??? If not will this work?
