  1. Your tank is really moving along quite nicely
  2. haha, I was too slow
  3. In theory there is exacty the same amount of work required to pump the water in either case. The extra friction in the pipe and additional bends would mean a pipe going to the top needs more energy.
  4. Yeah, I am in the same boat, I've been scouting around for a bigish pump (enough for three closed loops) that is uber quiet. In the US they rate this pump called ReeFlo Dart. It's way to grunty for my setup, might still be overkill for your tank you should look into it.
  5. Cool, nice work. Metal halides are miracle workers. What brand and bulb is that?
  6. I would also like to have the tank against the wall, but I would to it by having the pipes go through the bottom of the glass, asked about in other thread. That makes sense so that bottom pipe is a spray bar rather than an intake. What pump are you planing on using?
  7. Nice, I decided to go the way of the full siphon. Silence is pretty important to me. By the look of your design plans your going to use closed loops. How are they going to work?
  8. So have you decided which overflow design to go with? There is a comprehensive discussion there.

    Glass strength

Im will be setting up my tank with closed loops and an overflow which will all go through the bottom pane of glass. Will these 5 or so 32mm holes scattered about a 900x500mm tank base, weaken the glass too much to withstand rock and pressure? Or will by simply increasing glass thickness be enough to stop my carpet from getting wet?
  10. You must have some sort of experience in cabinet making. Seriously thats better than a brought one
  11. Would the saltwater stay 'fresh'. Would you cycle it through a UV sterilizer?
  12. Man of man, this is getting intense. After every post I change my mind   All good, personal preference I guess.
  13. Where did you score these from?
  14. Thanks for the info, I do need to do a bit of physics study anyway
  15. Oh right, I see  Just one thing what size of swing in water level are we talking (5cm, 10cm)? The standpipe should be about 3/4 the height of the weir as shown? Thanks
  16. I see. So when there is increased head in the weir the pressure produces extra flow. When the water level aproaches the standing pipe it slows down due to lack of head, is this right? :-? This valve is just a standard ball valve? Why would your return pump output vary?
  17. Which type do you have layton?
  18. Has anyone had problems with just a single overflow getting blocked ect?
  19. I used to live in the sticks about 4 months ago, I'm keen on some insight about your setup
  20. Cool, thanks . I'll go with a triangle shaped overflow in the corner with the dunso standpipe. Is it better to just let it overflow the piece of glass or should their be a comb on top?
  21. oh right, so it is better to have the traditional 'overflow' to remove floating things. What about debris that is not at the surface?
  22. In theory the airhole at the top of the tank should break the siphon.
  23. I'm in the process of designing my tank setup. The main objectives are that the overflow is hidden, quiet, takes up minimal tank space and takes water from the middle of the tank. Just need a strainer over the bulkhead to stop fishies getting sucked in. I am thinking two of these overflows would be the way to go. Not sure of pipe size? Anyone got a sharp stick to help the design process get moving? Thanks Kyle
