  2. I saw a sump that had these different grades of sand in it so the water flowed like throught different media throught a labyrinth. first coarse sand then medium then fine then filter wool. Is this very effective? I'm not very clear in my expalianation am i :bounce:
  3. its like a colourful blob in the middle of a bareen white void. I agreee with the above imagine the neck strain
  4. Well it's good i said excuse me if i'm wrong. :bounce:

  6. Animates had the fluval 204 on special last month - bugger missed out but otherwise the jebo's sound pretty good. Animates has an aqua day on the 15th of july so i might wait till then cos they said lots of stuff will be on special. Is it 1 watt per litre when it comes to the heater
  7. Currently i have a tall 35x35x60 tank and am not using fluros but the energy saving bulbs - an idea whetu gave. I have had great plant growth with them so would i be able to continue using these? Thanks everybody :bounce:

    Mould

I didnt know mould could grow under-water You learn something new everyday
  9. As Brad said it is bacterial bloom probably due to uneaten or other matter decaying. Do a water change and if you have a gravel cleaner use it to take out any excess food and other stuff that could be the cause. Also as mentioned if you change all or too much of your filter media at once the bacteria are not there to convert the rotting stuff through the cycle so other bacteria begin to eat it. O wise ones correct me if i'm wrong  It will clear up once the cause is fixed. As for the Kissing Gourami you might have to move him. How big is the KG compared to the other fish. From what ive heard they're better kept with fish their own size or larger - Please correct me if i'm wrong again  Hope it helps Kiran :bounce:
  10. i looked around both animates and animalz mirimar. The lady at animalz said a 100L tank was $100 dollars and said if i got it done through Port N Glass it would be cheaper. But i'll give hut pets a call to see what they have What type of external canister filters are best. I've seen lots of different ones. are any superior? or are there any that people comonly have problems with? Thanks for your help
  11. HI Eveyone I've measured up the available space in my house (My parents house would be more correct) and I am going to save up for a new tank (i have limited funds now) :bounce: . I'm thinking of getting it made by the Port Nicholson Glass guys as i cant find any around to suit what I want. It will be 90cm=L x 45cm=W and 60cm high. It will be a tropical planted freshwater and I have a few questions :-? 1) Will the Port Nicholson Guys no what glass thickness it should be? 2) Does any one know roughly what it will cost? - I'm gonna ring and see if i can get an amount from them 3) It will be roughly 180-190L what filtration will i be looking at? Will a large internal do or should i go for a small external + UG or even wet dry. Also i currently have a 75L on a flat based cabinet. There is an identical cabinet currently not being used and together they could fit the aquarium on it could this be used or do i need a stand? I would put a wooden board over them and make sure it was level. Thanks for your help. :bounce:
  12. Ammonia might just be cos its a new tank and not cycled fully yet.
  13. Sorry for your losses Caryl.
  14. I noticed this too but as i brought my tank as Complete setup no way of knowing where the heater was from. it sucked it away with the siphon. Never seen it again :bounce:
  15. Are there any other bottom dwelling species in you tank Matt? Thanks for your help :bounce:
  16. i'm thinking of getting some cories would these clean up the khuli's food before it can get to it? Should i just play it safe and get a BN or Two :bounce:
  17. I recently brought one of these remarkable fish The guy at the LFS said they're easy to keep so i brought it. He is in a community tank and I have been feeding bloodworms once a week at night (just before the lights go out) Is this sufficient? The plan was that he picks up the bloodworms that sink to the bottom and feed on the left over flake from the others. I have tried peas and apple but he doesn't seem to like them. Are there any other foods i should try. Thanks
  18. From what i know they eat a certain kinda of algae (green spot - I think :-? ) Not the algae you are talking about which -i'm pressuming by what you and Caryl have said- is a different type
  19. I have read that adding small amounts of water to a bag is an old myth. That it actually takes several days for the fish to fully adjust to the new conditions . I read this in a book that was fairly recent 2003 in the local library. Is this true?
  20. I was wondering a few days after my single BN catfish died what other catfish would be good to help control algae. I was thinking of two corydoras (but they are more omnivorish) or perhaps ottocinclus' or two BN's What small catfish or any other fish is good at controling algae. They have to be small as my tank is only small. Perhaps max 5/7 cm each. Thanks
  21. ok. Well i used full dose but my khuli seems fine - I'm thinking that i fed the b/n peas and maybe they absorbed some of the med and the bn ate them. Has this every happened before? Four days after all spots have gone so i might put a carbon cartridge in my filter. Or should i just let the med dilute through regular water changes. Thanks everybody
  22. Everything was going well (3 days after all spots had dissappeared) with the med but i woke up this morning to a patchy coloured dead BN catfish . I'm guessing it reacted badly to the med - he was looking slightly off colour yesterday. Has anyone else had this problem?
  23. Awesome Tank great planting and the darker substrate has great effect :bounce:
  24. I should have treated it aggresively from the start. I pretty much made it worse for myself/fish By your info i'm assuming i can treat them in the main tank :-? Thanks for your help
  25. ARRRGH Its over more than one fish now 2 neons and a glowlight I did not raise the temp as 27oC is already pushing the limits of the tetra's tolerance (or so i read) The aqua one works but it comes back. This fish all seem fine and happy though. I think i will get a treatment - Do these harm the good bacteria in the nitrogen cycle? I dont have a hospital tank so i may have to take a gamble. Thanks for everyones feedback
