  1. Hey Wok, can you stuff something in the AquaClear to get the water really clear? (is this called polishing?) When my carbon gets the biff in a few weeks, apart from more noodles, what else could I put in there? Sorry Tsarmina - hijacking your thread here a bit.. An AquaClear 30 will filter a tank up to 113 litres, this is a HOB filter, you can get them off TradeMe for under $50.00 (look at the Aquaclear 20 auction, details there)
  2. Yep, have a test kit, does pH, High pH, Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia. Had to stash it up high in the cupboard since it's got lots of corrosive nastys for my four year old to get into. I only have a 60 x 30 x30 tank with heaps of plants, I want to put a wee bunch of Glowlight tetras, a few otos and maybe a pair of Dwarf Gourami when the water is right. I was trying to avoid putting fish in that I don't particularly want and will have to get rid of them later.
  3. Are Bristle Noses hardy enough to help cycle a tank? I would really like some otos, but from what I've read, they might be a bit fragile (and expensive) to chuck in before the it has cycled.
  4. It's probably filled with resin (not the clear stuff either) so that you can't do that and steal their ideas, or find that there's nothing in the resin at all!!
  5. So Wok, you're not even contemplating buying the 15000litre tank from Napier then?

Sort of takes the fun out of fiddling with your aquarium, doesn't it? May as well have a plasma screen on the wall showing a looped DVD of the front of someone's fishtank... gee where have I seen one of those? I know a cafe in Albany!
  7. And a bag of cement in the bottom of the cabinet to stop it tipping over when you pull the tank?
  8. What size will the tank be? Could be pretty heavy and unbalance the setup if you are pulling it in and out of the cabinet.
  9. You could consider having a light sitting on top of the cabinet. You are going to need access to the top of the tank for cleaning, feeding purposes anyway, so if you cut out some of the top to allow for this, you could put a glass lid on the tank and put something like this http://www.officedepot.com/products/Art ... ue/421408/ on top. Don't ask me where you can get these in Nz, though, it's just to give you some ideas!!
  10. My eldest daughter would love a pet rat. So would our two cats, no doubt...
  11. You should be able to get isopropyl alcohol from a chemist shop, but usually only in a small bottle.
  12. Hey Caper, you're lucky your cat just types, our managed to press a combination of keys so that whenever you use Microsoft Excel and click on a cell, it anchors there and selects a whole bunch of cells wherever the mouse moves. Damn nuisance, renders the program totally inoperable, had to reinstall it to get rid of it.
  13. Why do you need more light if you're adding Co2? Is there a rate for lighting eg watts per surface area, or depth. Or is colour temp more important?
  14. Is 7000k excessive for a freshwater planted tank? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Members/0004-3 ... 889857.htm Would it need to be a single fitting, or would a double be better? Same size tank as above.

    Finally Logged in!

Hi Rebecca and welcome. It's quiet here tonight - they must be watching Lost and Invasion on TV2. It sounds like you're fairly well set up already, but there is lots of valuable information to be found here.
  17. Yes... wasn't quick enough there, they were a good price, too.
  18. The Pygmys look neat, do they eat algae?
  19. That would suit a beginner in a planted tank, to go with some Glowlight Tetras. Preferably not plant munchers!! The tank will be about 60litres 600 x 300 x 350mm, and I want to keep things (ie fish and plants) in proportion.
  20. http://www.adana.co.jp/contest06.html Just curious...
  21. Lounge = place where sofas (lounge suite), TV, coffee table live. And fish tank, of course. Yep, you can see through both sides of the tank. You may be waiting a while for pics! What do you consider a 'small' tank, Caper?
  22. Here's a way to eliminate the gooey residue! http://www.corsairmemory.com/corsair/co ... month.html About half way down, April 2005
  23. Thanks Wok, we have allowed for drainage and a tap under the tank, and the floor is concrete, ground and polished, so no soggy carpets! This was actually for allergy purposes, ie no cat fur and dust mites living in the carpet. I originally wanted the fishtank in the kitchen, where it would make up splashback behind the bench and under the cupboards, so you could sit there and stare at them while allegedly cooking tea. But the room behind it will be our plant room, and houses gas bottles and storage tanks for the underfloor heating, amongst other things, so that wouldn't work too well for the poor fishies.
  24. Peanuts - was that 'extra rooms' or 'an extra room'???
