  1. they get smaller than aros but because they use all tank levels they require more swimming space. im no expert on aros but youd probably want something slowish, that gets large and is very placid. id imagine with pacu being so fast your aro would be like 'heck, hes fast and big, better keep an eye on him' i wonder if perhaps geos might be ok? i have no idea on if its common in captive bred aros or not- mystic will chime in on that one no doubt  i say ditch glass tanks and go wood and perspex, that way you can have a 10,000L for all the monsters *dreams away*
  2. melafix is fine id half dose on the meds though.
  3. that pacu will be 60cm in no time and can bust tanks like nothing ive heard about (heard of em going thru 10mm glass no sweat). your aro will also get around 60cm but apparently they can get much bigger pacu are fast fish (scare a 60cm one and see him fly lol) and they get nippy sometimes, i have seen them in with aros and it was fine but IMO aros shouldnt have fish below them as that can cause drop eye which isnt that nice. it can work but its probably not best for the fish. at 15cm your aro is still very very young, they only come out of their parents (fathers?) mouth a little smaller so he is probably best to be left alone for a bit till he gets a bit bigger and tougher. http://images.google.co.nz/images?q=pac ... rch+Images thats some pics of pacu- see how big those wild ones are?
  4. i believe you have to be in a club thats affiliated with the FNZAS to recieve it?
  5. i have had troubles with mine, it never held temperature properly. it wouldnt switch on until the temp dropped to 25, turn on, heat up to 27 and let it drop back down again  a breeder i know also had this problem so its not just me  . i have found my aqua ones have always been ok though and theyre not much more expensive
  6. what fish are in the tank? some fish wont tolerate double doses at all and often flourish will kill it off with a normal dose over time im told. i was advised it is pretty dangerous to double dose even though so many people do it, i know quite a few people that have lost fish due to this. antwan had some sort of algae and he DD with excel and it killed some fish, then used another product (??? ant?) and it killed the algae and fish were fine
  7. cons- arent that friendly normally and worse when breeding sev- get at least 20cm, 25cm or so normally. JD- eat your fish, get to around 20-25cm texas- pretty nasty and will get around 30cm jewel- theyre africans and just nasty anyway jags- at least 35cm for female, males average 45-50cm and shouldnt be kept with other species, the only fish they might get on with is a breeding partner. i loved my boesmani rainbows, theyre such beautiful fish- specially the males and they get around 8cm or so. firemouths might be ok, will end up eating neons though. they tend to be pretty placid fish as far as cichlids go.
  8. i saw that listing i thought *bet those plants arent going to last long once that oscar grows up a bit* i am unsure what those swords are, sorta look like plain old amazons. amazons get some massive roots so may be ok, but i wouldnt put it past a 30cm oscar to have a 'moment' and rip em out and tear em to shreads 'just because' you can always try and just hope that your fish turn out to be angels, ya dont know if ya dont try right? your cycling plan sounds good, that way the plants will get time to settle down and root properly.
  9. i challenge you to try find someone keeping rooted plants that arent jammed into a real hard spot with adult oscars in a tank  the red spot might also be a prob to plants, theyre pretty clumsy fish. most of the others should be ok though. oscars are notorious for re-arranging their tanks, i have fake plants in my O tank and even then they have to be weighted down cause he digs em up and they float :-? try plants like java moss/fern, anubias etc and tie them onto things but if you get some of the big plants that need to be rooted pile large unmoveable rocks around their base- you might find the oscars pull the leaves though  you want something with tough leaves that can stand being dug up a fair bit good luck with making the tank up :bounce:

    sealing MDF

hello all, just bought my trusty hammer lock stand today for my discus tank, i made it so it was only the half height one (90cm). i want to coat the MDF piece that is going to go under my tank with something to stop it swelling, what would i use for that? also how many people have used the ones with the 350kg shelves? my tank is 216L and going to be bare bottom but will work out around 270kg i think after everythings in place, if this tank ends up on the floor i will not be impressed. i got myself, my sister and mother to sit/stand on the top part and it can hold our combined weight of 205kg approx.
  12. fish lose eyes all the time and most live as long as they dont get bacteria or fungal infections in the wound. i say if hes acting ok keep him, put some melafix in his tank and keep the water clean and hope for the best. keep that naughty eye eater away too
  13. i thought all woods rotted eventually but it depends on the type as to how quick?
  14. your getting overcharged if your paying 30 bucks for a 4cm discus mate! thats around what youd pay for the leopards or something which are normally alot more expensive. i say let MTS strike again and get another tank
  15. vets will do it for you and some will even come to your home to do it for you if you have large fish. i asked my vet and he said he just put something in the water (cant remember the name) like they use for putting animals down. this is how my oscar is going to go if i happen to have the time, i dont mind paying for a call out.
  16. yes, its definatly just sulking a friend of mine had an oscar pair, one day the male snapped and basically killed his partner and then when she was gone sulked for a good few months! fish can definatly sulk, even if theyre the reason the fish get removed  as long as hes still eating, even if its less than normal, he should be ok
  17. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 753253.htm says its horizontalis but it seems alot of people call leopard swords this now?
  18. they will get bullied with an oscar unless its very placid IMO. BGK wouldnt stand up for themselves and a big fish whos feeling nasty is just going to keep on chasing :-? unsure of what they would be like with aros though. it seems like they (BGK) are quite placid fish except to ones they can fit in their mouths  some people use clear plastic piping for BGK hiding spots, apparently we cant see them when theyre in there
  19. i bury ones im close to or are too big to throw in the bin but small ones normally get wrapped in tissues and go in the rubbish. the hole i had to dig for the pacu i rescued was a bigun  57cm long not including tail at time of death, 7 years old. we made sure the whole was about 2 foot deep just incase the cats thought it would be funny to dig him up :-? i wonder what people would do with aros etc?
  20. i couldnt imagine anyone throwing an oscar sized fish onto the ground- good luck getting it even into a bag i say! no way id ever use the hitting method, its too violent for me- you wouldnt throw your cat on the ground to kill it would you?
  21. i wouldnt buy a 30mm discus, i reccomend people starting out with discus to buy the biggest they can afford but try for at least 7-8cm. it is very very hard work to grow discus up and so easy to stunt them, many people buy small ones because theyre cheaper but it rarely works out well, i learnt this from experience i reccomend buying another tank, doing it bare bottom and getting a few around 5-7cm, bigger the better cause its easier with larger ones. bare bottoms are often seen as ugly and boring but when you see your discus growing you will realise why people reccomend them (BB). i saw a great thread on simplydiscus about why barebottoms are great but i cant find it now
  22. do realise jono that individual fish will react differently to meds, you can have a group which are all the same species and some wont like the meds yet others will be fine. also tank parmaters can come into play. psyc- if the ich wasnt going away something wouldnt have been right in the tank and perhaps the meds could have just stressed them more? sorry for your loss, its not nice losing fish

    Bloated Goldfish

if you want to do another one i would do enough water changes to completely remove all traces of epsom salts and then dose. if it has cleared a blockage i would expect him to continue going down in size as he continues to clear out the backup

    Nasty Red-tail

my friend told me she had a heap of guppies go missing, didnt know who did it until she saw the RTS with one hanging out of his mouth. perhaps they normally just kill them and not eat them?
