just being chased by a net is stress enough for a fish and could probably lower the immune system :-? i agree with mystic on the Qteen thing, most people think 'ahh well, havent had any problems yet so no need to set up one' but its not until you have outbreaks of things that can wipe out your tank lot of fish etc that you realise what a good thing it is to have, my Qteen is just a 40L plastic storage bin with a spare heater and sponge filter that is kept running in one of the other tanks (naughty i know). good luck with the rest of your fishies, plecos and rams are sensitive fish anyway when it comes to illnesses so dont beat yourself up too much also hope your kittie gets better aswell

i beleive the gold saums are fake GT's? sort of a GT lookalike... unsure if there are any differences in behaviour or if we actually have both true and fake GT's in the country or just one type. greenterror- sounds like youve got a cutie on your hands, theyre not normally tough enough to take out jags- 'hes' a keeper- nasty fish rule! 8) you should be able to find some pics of the different sexs on google

tapeworm do live in the gut but they sometimes do fall out of the fish from what ive read, i am unsure what they look like though sorry
-
the panaque species are also very avid wood eaters and can chow through soft woods very easily
-
chances are that he will turn on the other fish once he hits puberty, im not sure what size that is generally. i dont think a smaller acara would last very long in a GT tank depending on the size of the GT of course. once he gets a bit of size on him i would probably move out the guppy, algae eater and khulis (they might be ok if theyre really secretive), most of the others will probably have to be moved out once hes able to fit them in his mouth, or even nearly in his mouth. i have seen a few successful tanks with tank mates for GT's, they are mainly larger/faster fish and the tanks are always 400L+, it seems GT's wont play nice if they dont have all the room they want
-
i think its time to pack ourselves up and leave this country, lets go to america guys! they have a half decent selection of fish over there
-
what sex it is (you say he but i label fish certain sexes if i dont know hehe)? if its a male dont get another male, chances are one will kill the other, they dont have 'terror' in their name for nothing  perhaps ask if they can order a sexable one in of the opposite sex and see how that works out? if he is beating up an acara i would probably move the acara out, theyre not massive fish and GT's can pack a punch if they want to. they are absolutley stunning fish (on my wanted list lol), dont have any pics we can drool over by any chance?

new tank arrived.... let the silly questions begin(pics)
sharn replied to Doug's topic in Beginners Corner
also your RTBS might snack on the smaller danios. -
why exactly are they classed as 'high risk'?
-
it was a monster alright, really makes you have respect for a fish when you see this big jag lurking in the back watching 'his domain'. i think he was alone in a 300gal (1200L approx) so he had more than enough room, i wish i lived in america so i could steal him
-
i think the biggest male ive seen was 56cm not including tail... do you have any links to pics of ones that big? i have always read from big cichlid guys on the net that they average 50cm for males in tanks, how big are the wild caught ones generally?
-
he felt so special, i could see his little happy face  hopefully he does spawn with the female and ant can get some F1's out there cause the males are stunning!
-
i just got three of them with a filter i bought off TM. the light is a nice white colour and they light two footers perfectly (not sure about growing plants though). the cord is nice and long too
-
id like to see you throw a pacu/gourami/aro at the ground alan! its not as easy to euthanaise fish for the people that keep fish over 20cm long or so, because they can be such large animals you really need something to put them to sleep first (like clove oil) and then do the deed.
-
congrats cameron! i would get a 4x2x2 if possible. it is a tall tank though, you could probably go shorter but they would look great in a display tank spawning and the extra room is always appreciated by these beasts, especially if the male roughs the female up a bit. can you put your hand in their tank while theyre breeding when the male is around 40cm please to let me know if it hurts? just joking bud

Testing the waters for a new Christchurch club
sharn replied to Loopy's topic in FNZAS & Afflilated Clubs
is there already a club in chch? if not then i dont see why its a problem!! tga used to have a club, it went under years ago and with the help of others we recently set up a new one. you dont need 50 members to have a club, even 3 is ok! i think we have 12 financial members of our club. its not a hassle at all starting up a club, i did alot of the groundwork for ours and once you have interest, posters up to try and grab more attention and members you organise the first meeting, discuss with the other people what they would like to have in a club and away you go! caryl was a large help in setting up the club (thanks caryl!!). its not a major affiliating with the FNZAS, and it wouldnt be a major un-affiliating id imagine. you dont even have to affiliate anyway so it could just stay a free club. its not supposed to be a high tech, govt like thing with lots of fine print and hassles, its supposed to stay fun and easy! -
yeah, there is the control box which you hang on the outside of the tank that has the temp dial on it, that box has a power cord and a probe attatched that goes into the tank. plus they cant get smashed by big fish
-
i hope you havent got any males because theyll grow wider than the tank at 15cm they are still very young, the will hit maturity in a little while and i dont hold much hope for any of the other fish then you would need at least 1000L to try and house four jags in the same tank and thats just space wise, i think it would be near impossible if you had multiple males. heres a good example (its one i always remember because we had told him countless times to move that jag out)- http://www.theoscarspot.com/smf/index.p ... 267.0.html
-
i wouldnt say they are better either but i have had nothing but trouble with my two jebo so dont use them any more. if i have to replace/buy new heaters i get stainless now, so much easier to use so my tanks will slowly be changing over to them
-
you will see their bellies turn orange. make sure they pretty much always have food available to them and do lots of water changes as the brine shrimp die after a while in fresh water
-
chopped bloodworms (reeeeeal fine) work if they are large enough to eat that yet, they dont have to be that old until they can start eating prepared foods.
-
a 1000L tank shouldnt have 10mm glass and a pacu shouldnt be in one much smaller so no probs  pacu can break open brazil nuts in the wild with those freaky teeth, imagine what they can do to precious aro skin if they want the zoo was the scenario i had seen where they seemed to be ok, those pacu were zipping and nipping all over the place though. giant gourami might be a good choice actually? perhaps consult an arowana forum?
-
ill bet those are stunted discus should have small eyes so compare with pics on simplydiscus (those guys are tough on eye sizes) to the fish youve seen to determine if theyre a good size for their eye size.
-
they are very nice fish (which i hope to one day own) but i could list a whole page of disaster stories with very few happy endings, if any :-? they are very very aggressive fish, they will often take over the whole room they are in and will try and attack the person near the tank thru the glass a male can get up to 50cm or so, so they are large fish, its like all the muscle in their bodies go to their jaws. smcoleman is a very lucky man indeed, many breeders will seperate their pairs thru dividers to spawn as males often kill the females afterwards or if they dont want to spawn. wok- i would move yours out man, they can snap like nothing, if you dont value your other fish then they would probably be ok if your tanks 60cm wide or so (cause of the size they grow to). jags are some of my favourite fish and i have a spare 460L for a lone male but im too lazy to set it up
-
hahahaha i feel sorry for you man! when i was moving tanks they were stripped bare bar substrate (large gravel) and it still took me four nets and two people to catch the little mosters! theyre such sneaky little fish
