emperor tetras?

do you mean the gill coverings (operculum) are missing so the actual gill tissue is exposed? with dosing you add your inital dosage then 24 hours later add another dosage. so say your tank is 80L you use two capsules on day one then add another two 24 hours later. im not 100% what happens then as i dont have a pack on hand but it tells you what to do after that on the pack. lowering the tank water will reduce the amount of meds needed

Scuba- fish will handle cooling much better than over heating (which rarely happens when using heat packs unless its done wrong). i have read of discus surviving temps down to around 15C during shipping, loss of power etc tho they will go very very sluggish and will need to be bought back up to normal temps very slowly. even in well insulated poly boxs the temp can still drop quickly if the outside temps are low. 2fishy- i would think your supplier may be able to supply you some, have you checked with them? i think there are some on trademe too and work out really cheap if you buy bulk

i agree with alan, dont mess with it if you can help it. i use bird grit in most of my filters because my kh (carbonate hardness, keeps your ph stable) is 0 out of the tap. there isnt often an set ph level 'your fish must be at or they will die'- thats a load of poop and altering normally only occurs for breeding. do you have some sort of filter on the taps?

welcome shilo we have a tga club if you are interested in popping along- everyone from the novice to more experienced are welcome. if you would like some more details you can private message me just wondering if you cycled your tank?

i was quite happy the other day when i found out i can start my Rena by just pumping the lift lock clamps for the hoses- a few pumps and it started to siphion itself and once full i just plugged in.

im not sure- someone said once that that massive seahorse farm tank would put less pressure per square meter on the ground than a car (only four wheels touching the ground) because its spread out over such a large area, i assumed this would be the case for the tank i wanted (over 3.5mx4 footx4 foot and it would be out in the garage) but i did look into that industrial concrete at one stage. i would definatly re-inforce the floor extremely well for putting a tank like that inside. youd probably wana get builders in to do that to make sure its done properly

setting up my new aro tank (alot of pics 56k warning)

keep in mind clown knives (if properly housed which isnt too common here) can reach 36"+. most average 24" due to improper housing though but they are awesome fish- definatly worth the extra room! i think royals are neat fish and when they get larger (which takes ages sadly lol) they look absolutly stunning! some gold lines do look nice- they cost more though and sometimes they arent really that gold for some reason -
good to hear discus can sometimes take a while to settle in, i have been told larger discus dont take to moving as well as the smaller ones do. congrats on the eggs- will you attempt to keep them or let them get eaten?

melafix helps with wounds but i am unsure if its ok to use with orandas. extra clean water heals wounds up wonderfully if the fish is healthy so you dont have to use meds. tonic is an all round med- it will keep the wound clean but im not sure if it should be applied topically like meth blue would be-probably better wait for someone on that one. Wunder dose make plain meth blue so perhaps its worth ringing a few other shops to find it if the Tonic wont be ok?

i am wanting to make a 5000L tank for pacu one day and it would have wooden back, bottom and sides with a pespex/glass front. it seems quite tricky to put together and you need some sort of sealent for the inside (perhaps pool sealents or something) but it would work out cheaper than all glass i would imagine

i got it- without a mans help unless you count Frank's (my oscar) watchful eye as help  i pulled it apart fairly hard and managed to wiggle the piece into place- got grazed knuckles in the process but grazed knuckles is nicer than having to take it to someone to fix

ahhhh- so thats why theyre saying dechlorinators will also effect treatments and can be used if things go wrong? its a pretty drastic measure to go to so i would only use it as a very last resort. oscars are real messy fish and even when theyre small will still blow food out their gills so that could be contributing to it- you may not be over feeding at all? if you keep the tank really clean the planaria will have nothing to eat and will die off. certain fish will eat them but i wouldnt advise putting them in with O's, even baby ones. O's can go quite a while without eating but i have found garden worms (from a place that isnt sprayed) will get them to eat when theyre having an "oscar moment' and are being really picky. what are you feeding yours at present?

 the steel cap just missed  i tried a little harder to pull it apart, it sort of pulls apart but still not enough to get the little spikes on the clamp into place :-?

im no scientist but thats what is said on the net when it comes to using PP? after my treatment on one of my fish the water was still purple so i decided to test it out and it worked- the water didnt go clear but nearly, sort of like a light tannin from driftwood. *shrugs* found this also but have no idea what it is-
-
i agree alan- i would expect .5ppm would kill the planaria and it wont hurt the fish at all. 2ppm is the average dose when treating fish, tho 1ppm is often used with africans as they are more sensitive. a constant watch has to be kept on the tank also (and i mean constant, check on occupants at least once every 5 mins during four hour min treatment) as that is normally when things go wrong. H2o2 is its antidote and is easily obtainable (i use 3%). sadly i have had to do alot of reasearch on it lately but if caution is used (and a constant watch) it is relatively safe. it is an option if it really bothered you but is normally easy enough to clean up to barely noticable levels using the methods above (reduced feeding and water changes).

i suspect you have plain albino corys (cant remember sci name but its not adolfoi), i have some and theyre very peaceful fish and have never heard of them causing damage to other fish.

black lights provide little if any goodness for plants, and nothing for fish. i think i read that prolonged exposure to the fish can cause them harm but im not sure. different coloured lights (ie orange, green etc, like the coloured bulbs you can buy) are purely for looks and wont provide much for plants either. there is a certain K that brings out the blues and pinks in fish which is natural and will be ok for plants- i just cant remember what rating it is

i cant i bought it off TM (new, and the guy sells alot of fishy stuff) and because it was posted i have no way of claiming from either him or the postage company because i dont know where it was broken. it was the clip closest to the centre of the box which makes me think it wasnt in the post (box was undamaged) but i have no way of proving it. he did not state in his auction that he took no responsibility for items after they left his hands but im not paying 20 for it to be sent back when its not my fault it got broken i am going to hit the roof if i have to pay someone to fix this for me- i paid 220 for it and ill be one unhappy camper if i have to pay more for it  why would they sell the spare parts if it isnt easily fixed?

i know the PP kills all snails, it probably kills planaria too?

i recently purchased a 304 and sadly one lift lock clamp arrived broken. got the replacement clamps today but cant for the life of me find out how to get them in! i took the four silver screws on the underside of the head out but that wont pull apart (i didnt try very hard for risk of breaking it) enough for me to be able to get the clamp in place. any ideas?

yes, many people put sheets of poly cut to fit around the back and sides of their tanks

that looks bad is she able to set up a quarentine asap, she just needs a 40L or so bin (large bucket would work etc) you can buy at the warehouse, a little internal (like 20 bucks from the pet store) and stuff some of the filter media from the old tank into the new filter and a little heater. fill the bin with half old water half new, set up and your away for a hospital tank. its way easier to treat in a seperate tank and it wont stress your healthy fish. is also handy for quarentining and new fish before they go into the main tank. it will need to be treated asap as it is quite far gone, i reccomend furan 2 as its gentle and seems to do the trick well but others use other products. there should be a product at her LFS that will tackle fungus. where abouts is your friend located? we have a fish club in tga and someone may be able to pop around and help her 1 on 1 if shes having and doubts or problems when it comes to treatment.

i agree on tank size, but i would reccomend upping the w/cs to 50% minimum if all the fish are of medium size (around 10cm or so) as they will be creating a good amount of waste. clean water is a good healer too. i would go for something like meth blue, furan 2 (more broad spectrum) or something of the likes for the shark, furan is totally safe for the cats but if she uses meth blue (or something similar) make sure she does a half dose if she cant treat in a hospital tank as cats are sensitive to most meds. that bit makes me think perhaps she is catching the fish, breaking down the tank and giving it a big over haul- would you be able to find out her cleaning routine please?
