sorry for hashing up the old threads, just thought i might as well put it here instead of starting a new topic. im looking at the 2200 for my 460L, in the past ive had issues with the inlet/outlet bends because of the bracing thickness which is why i currently have a fluval running (its too small for the tank which is why i need a bigger filter). i dont have the cash to fork out for a fx5 hence me looking at these. will the inlet/outlet bends fit over my 70mm bracing without needing to be modified?
-
as far as i am aware most filters are rated before media is added with the exception of a few brands which have an approx after being filled. i would take a couple hundred lph off it once its full up depending on what you put in it. do they have spray bars or the plain outlet like the fluvals? if it has a spray bar you can just face that back at the glass to diffuse the flow

   no need to tell lies brian, thats no filter, thats a small child disposer! good stuff

yes, acidic is the lower end of the ph scale. i dont think your geo will be too happy in an african tank, they also have different ways of going about things territory and aggression wise. i dont keep africans so im not too sure what the different species prefer, most keepers keep them around 8 i think.

angels: maybe depending on the sevs temperment plecs: should be fine (mines ok with my plec) algae eaters: should be fine (havent seen them kept together though) tiger barbs: not sure siamese fighers: probably not, the fighters wouldnt be able to stand up for themselves and their fins would probably get nipped

where is it coming from? its behind? if so then thats probably its 'bits'
-
MTS= multiple tank syndrome  BTS= big tank syndrome im no african expert but i beleive the synos can go in with africans, i dont think the geos can though- they prefer the acidic waters like discus i believe.

im not a guy though evil? who are you talking about?

my Oscar probably provides the most amusement. As we speak he is waging a war on one particular plastic plant, hes spent the last few days angry as hell (flaring, changing colours) attempting to ram it. It seems its the plants fault when hes goes straight thru it  He also has a terracotta pot he has managed to move great distances (up and over a piece of driftwood) that also gets a good bite/tail slap just for good measure when it looks at him wrong  His all time favourite hate is the white teddy bear, im not sure what exactly he hates about it but if its anywhere near his tank and he can see it he will spend many hours attempting to get to it. Other than that my discus peck at my freckles on my arm sometimes and my axolotls bite my cats tails/noses when they are on top of their tank

when it comes to keeping big fish (if thats what you are planning on doing) it always helps to have a spare they could go into temporarily if need be. that said its a good idea to have a spare tank for any size fish, a couple of cheap two footers will do for small fish and a second hand 300L or so could do most large fish for a few days. they dont have to be flash new tanks, just need to hold water ok. i was very thankful that i had a 460L spare out in the garage (bought specifically incase a tank ever leaked or fighting was causing problems) when my 360L sprung a leak, i would have been in BIG trouble otherwise because an oscar isnt going to be too happy in a standard two footer  its not a must you have a spare and most people wont ever need one, its just nice to have a little backup plan *just incase* if you can
-
any aggression in the tank? if there is it is possible he has taken a good beating/ramming and it has hurt the swim bladder/other vital organs?
-
discusguru- the fluros are only 30W each so it doesnt sound like im going to be creating electrical fires
-
not sure if this is any help- http://www.fishbase.org/summary/species ... hp?id=7990 seems their max size is around 24" youve probably googled it already but i thought id pop it up anyway- http://www.google.co.nz/search?hl=en&q= ... erus&meta=
-
id say so tsar- if my experience is anything to go on. i fixed mine, i just stole the starter out of my 4 footer and popped it in and away it goes. now i just gotta get a starter for my 4 footer  does it matter the one in the bung light said 4-65W and the one i put in said 4-85W? probably shoulda asked this before hand just incase

fishboi- im not anti-culling the undesirables for general breeding, im actually all for it as it is bettering the species/variation (i wont even let my discus breed due to a few small faults most would over look) but making a 'new' fish up would mean thousands would die because you are looking for a certain mutation which i would imagine may be a bit harder to find than 'perfection'? i dunno *shrugs* i have nothing other than opinion to offer so i shall shut my pie hole cause im not helping pheonix
-
ive just skimmed this topic so excuse me if this has already been answered- what are you planning to do with all the undesirables along the way? i know you are going to go ahead if you want to regardless of my comment but i would like to say is it worth hundreds (potentially thousands) of fish being killed to make one new looking fish? (i know they already exist, we just cant get them).

ive always used rock salt personally, not sure if thats sea salt or what though (im not a salt expert)

6 + 24 at perhaps  if you are planning (and its a total definate cause if it goes down the plug hole chances are you wont be able to get rid of it or move it when it gets larger) to get a tank at least 8x3 (then you have the whole deal of filtration, flooring, stands, heating etc) then a giant gourami *may* be worth looking at. IMO they require more financial commitment than most other animals, they require large tanks (lost of $$), lots of food and can live for 30+ years once they get to full size moving is not an easy task and it causes them considerable stress. consider them a very long term commitment. they do however make excellent pets but a little bit of cash must be sacraficed to make them a nice home  if not oscars are an awesome smaller fish, they max out at 12-14" on average. i love mine to bits, he is definatly part of the family. mine has his favourite things and things he hates with a vengance (a white teddy bear, terracotta pot, my slipper)

my mother has told me Frank (my oscar) likes locusts better than praying mantis (apparently he likes the crunchyness). shes the primary insect feeder and often goes on specific catching missions just for Franky because hes 'giving her the look'

you guys are legends i shall get onto that tomorrow
-
yay :bounce: the first spawn is always a good feeling (well i wanted to cry cause i didnt want eggs and an angry pair messing up my relatively calm tank  ). it seems you could almost put them under the 'convict' class, once they start they just keep on going if they dont raise fry  best of luck and hopefully you will get some fry out of them (if you want fry of course)

cloudy eyes can be a sign of bacterial problems or a water indicator. im not sure how long platties are supposed to live for these days so im not sure if old age would be causing him to go blind or not. white stringy poop isnt a good sign, even with a diet of algae wafers you would expect to see some colouring to his poops :-? have a look thru the recent posts on 'hexamita' on here or do a google and see if you think that fits his description for his feaces he definatly sounds like one tough cookie, i hope he pulls thru!

just wondering if anyone knows what to do with the Aqua One AL-30D (3 foot double fluro tube) when one of the tubes just doesnt turn on anymore? ive got the round starters in my larger 4 foot lights but im not sure what to do about the Aqua One ones. its definatly not the tube either, it was recently replaced and the actual unit has been making a slight buzzing noise when that side of the unit is turned on (and it flickered too for a bit before turning on which im told is the starter motor?).

you are indeed right abalone- it isnt great fun watching six fish die off (especially if you had to fork out a fair bit for it) however a single discus probably wont be too happy and the stress of being alone may invite problems along eventually. i would suggest getting more discus within the next few weeks if your first one is doing well (from personal experience i suggest get at LEAST 4 more to make a total of five otherwise its constant bickering and picking at each other). big discus also dont seem to like being moved much, my larger fish definatly sulked longer than my smaller ones when i bought my discus. if they start to play up the remedy will probably be fairly easy if caught early enough- most of the time the problems lie with tank params (dirty water, wrong temp) or tankmates. if in doubt do a water change  that said i agree with the others on tank flow, i have my spraybars pointed back at the glass best of luck with your discus :bounce:

youll get both colour strains, im not too sure what %, id guess around 50/50 though. when you cross the colours the fry dont turn out to look like a mix (ie they wont be red (from red parent) with orange stripes (from lutino parent)) they just look like one or the other- im not sure if thats what you were asking or not though  oscar breeding pairs (successful ones) will go for as much as someone wants to pay, a store may sell them for $200 where as some people might think $80 is too high. IMO somewhere around the 80-100 mark would be a good start but i havent looked into purchasing pairs before. best of luck with your O's :bounce:
