  1. Interesting... would be good to have an active club here in Christchurch... I will think about it... maybe when I have a little more free time
  2. Hi there... I am interested in joining a club... I am located in chch... so I guess the Canterbury club will be the one for me. I am just trying to get more info however... is there ONE club for the whole of NZ like the FNZAS where everyone joins? Or does everyone belong to a local club? and all these local clubs make up the FNZAS?? What is involved in joining a club? Fees? What activities are there? Just curious... are there regular meetings or activities?
  3. Underwater World in Hokitika? Is that some kinda aquarium place ppl go to see fish swimming around?? Or is it a shop selling fish and stuff?? Sounds cool... might make a trip to Hokitika to visit if I have time... will have to get in touch with the shop to find out what they have there first before I make the trip though... dont wanna drive all the way for nothing
  4. hey there... anyone in here have freshwater prawns, crabs or lobsters in their aquariums ??? Maybe there aren't any freshwater prawns in nz... and crabs... My tanks

I have a 4 feet, 200 litre tank. 1 silver arowana 1 tiger fish 1 pleco 2 silver sharks 2 apple snails 3 clown loaches The tank is planted with gravels, some big rocks and driftwood.
  6. so rock salt or sea salt is ok? as long as it is non-iodised? Is epsom salt ok?
  7. Datnoides Microlepis
  8. finally found one today... great price too...very happy about it... will post a pic soon
  9. I did cycle the tank when I first got it... One more thing... I hear some ppl adding salt in their tanks... is there a reason for this? Anyone on this forum do it? I picked some worms from the garden today... and put them straight in the tank.. just wondering if this is ok? do i need to clean the worms? some ppl say that the worms shoulde be quarantined to make sure they do not carry bacteria etc etc... but then they also say feeder fish bought from shops should be quarantined... isn't this a bit overboard? I have even heard of ppl leaving the water in pails overnight before they do their water changes... i usually just get water from the tap and pour it straight in the tank... I am in chch...so should not have problem with water quality... no chlorine in tap water... what pH is chch tap water anyway?
  10. Well, I have just had my tank for a week now... all my fishes seem pretty healthy... swimming around quite actively... so shouldn't be any problems... I do regular water changes... about 10% every 2 days... coz my filter is a bit small... it is a Rio 400 pumping 420 litres/hour... and my tank is a 4' x 1.5' x 1.5' which is about 200 litres...so the pump is turning over the water in the tank 2 times an hour... I know this is a bit low... and I really need an external canister pump... but I can't afford one now... will get one in the next few months when the fish get bigger... and i figure with regular water changes...it should be allright? my silver is about 6-7 inches now... pleco is about 7... clown loaches about 2-3, silver sharks about 3, and I have some plants in the tank... pebbles.... some big rocks... some driftwood
  11. i just went thru the list... and there are quite a lot of fish there... I have one question though... have any of u heard of the flowerhorn? it is supposedly a pretty new species/breed... I have a friend breeding it in Malaysia at the moment... he was just telling me about it... Is it allowed to be imported into NZ?
  12. I saw a puffer at a local shop last week... they called it a "dragon" puffer... have no idea what that is... could not find any info on it... they were selling it for $57... it was about 3 inches... only eats live worms apparently... I didn't dare to get it coz i was afraid it would be aggressive as most of the info i got for puffers on the net said that they were pretty agro... nipped tails... and i didn't want to risk it nipping my arowana... it had red eyes in my memory... body was plain with not much markings... just light greyish in colour
  13. thanks... will do that this weekend... they are awfully expensive though... there were a couple i saw today... the shop would only sell them as a pair... 99.95 each... they were tiny...about 2 inches... and their colour was all faded and scrappy and looked dirty.... another shop i went to.... they were selling sumatran tigers for 110 each... bigger in size...but all sold out... I am just looking for one...to add to my tank... but dont want to pay too much for it... would it be possible to get a small one for about 70?
  14. hi there everyone... I am new here... have been on other overseas forums... never knew there was one in nz... cool... well... i am actually looking for a siamese tiger at the moment... cant seem to find any... can anyone help?
