I just got one of the siphons with a valve inside so i dont need to suck... just move the pipe up and down in the tank and somehow the valve creates a vacuum and water will start pumping
-
cool.... are they really so common?? hmm...i always thought they were really rare... might try to go around someday... maybe lake ellesmere... or the hurunui river .... or the waimak.... big streams and river are ok eh?? or does it have to be small streams
-
are they so easy to find? I do not have any idea which streams around canterbury would have koura

Well... I ended up using Spot Away... but only using half of the recommended dosage... the clown loaches were quite heavily infected... so i figured salt might just not do it this time... and this was a cheaper option... today is day 3 of the treatment... I put some in on day 1... and some today which is day 3... also turned up the temperature a bit... hope it will go away the next few days or so... heard that they usually can be cured in 3-5 days...
-
Forgot to mention the clown loaches were selling for $45... quite reasonable I think for the size... they have it in the same tank with an eel... I like the freshwater crayfish though... hoping to get a few in the future...

Club trip in January eh... hmm... a bit early... cos I was just at the Fish Tank today... and they took me out to the back... they are doing quite a big renovation and adding quite a lot of big tanks at the back... they are going to expand their aquarium displays... I think they are thinking to get serious... I have heard them saying they want to display some bigger fish like arowana, and also some siamese tigers... they have a pair out the back which they are trying to bulk up quick in time for their new refurbishment... they say it will be another 4 months maybe for it to be completed...

So does that mean you have to do water changes with warm water????
-
Sorry to dissapoint you Caryl, but I think the one in the Countdown/ Pak n Save car park has gone out of business...

It is on the corner of Ilam and Clyde Road, I think the address is 399 Ilam Road. Nice small shop with not a lot of fish...but some unique fish... they have a nice eel there... was a really cute dragon puffer but its been sold... and right now they have a freshwater crayfish in there as well... Other shops that I would advise to visit would be Pet World on 475 Ferry Rd, The Fish Tank on 250 Stanmore Rd, Animates on 467 Papanui Rd (not the one on Moorhouse Ave), Critter Kingdom on 213 Blenheim Rd and Redwood Aquatics on 21 Hussey Rd... those are the few shops that I frequent and I think have a better range of fish...

Just stopped by Organism today for a quick look and boy they have a couple of pretty big clown loaches there.... I would say they were around the 8 inch mark... biggest I have seen... can't wait till mine get that big...
-
Thanks everyone, I have added salt to the tank... and will start doing bigger water changes everyday... I will also slowly increase the temperature of the water one degree a day for 3 days... if this still doesn't work then I will have to go with the medicine...

All the fish in my signature are in the same tank... most of them should be ok with the salt... but I dunno bout the snails though
-
I just noticed that my clown loaches have white spots all over their bodies and tails as well... I am just wondering whether it is an infection of some sort? All my other fishes are fine... the clown loaches are also fine... just saw the spots earlier... The thing is... the clown loaches keep rubbing their bodies against rocks I have in the tank... they turn their bodies sideways and wiggle on the rocks as if to scratch themselves... so I am thinking the white markings on them are from them scratching themselves on the rocks... what do you guys think? should I add salt to the tank?
-
don't they have covers for the aquariums? or did the aro dislodge the cover while jumping?
-
True Benny... after having my silver for almost a month... I am starting to think it is nicer than asian aro's... I like their straight back... can't wait till it grows bigger... eats a lot... i feed it 3 times a day... usually about 5 or 6 floating pellets each time... I also feed it centipedes from the garden... about 1 every 2 days... flies when there are some in the house... and it also takes some of the bloodworms I feed to the other fish
-
I love arowana's... however I could only afford a silver... there are lots of colours as the guys here stated...red being the most expensive... then there is red tail gold...gold... green...blue... yellow... and there is also a crossback... which I think is just a red but the scales develop all the way to the top of the fish and cross at the back... something like that...never seen one though...just pictures...can anyone elaborate? there is also one called "one line dragon" where the scales crossing on the back of the fish form a straight line... and will fetch more money.... I have seen the pearl aro at redwoods...nice...but honestly... it is not a nice display tank... way too small for that fish.....I doubt it will grow much more if he keeps it in that tank... and the barbels are pretty short and stunted... I wonder why...
-
yup...true...i bought one of the ones from redwood for 42... very reasonable... the other one has been bought by someone as well... but redwood is keeping it for him to get it in a better condition before the guy takes it home... it is looking a bit thin, black and does not move much... the one i got is really good though... nice bright colours once i got it home... and swimming around... very picky eater though.... only wants to eat live food... so far I have fed it tadpoles, mosquito larvae and earthworms
-
cool.... will put a pail out in my garden soon... just wondering... when u say green water... is it just water from any river / lake... there is this dog park i take my dog to every weekend... they have a few lakes there... would water from there do?
-
ok...i got some more worms from the garden... and the tiger is chomping them down happily... so that is one problem solved.... one more question tho... i also wanna feed the worms to my arowana... but it only eats floating stuff... so any of u ppl out there have any bright ideas on how to make the worms float???
-
Hi guys... my baby tiger is about 2 1/2 inches... and it won't eat anything that isn't alive... so i am having difficulty finding food for it.... at first it still ate worms from the garden... now it won't even eat them... i got some mosquito larvae and it loves them... but they are quite hard to find and not much shops have them for sale... not much feeder fish for sale around as well... i tried frozen bloodworms... frozen beef liver... it doesn't even look at it... so i am just wondering if any of you guys have any experience and know what they would eat?
-
Got this pic from another forum... isn't it beautiful
-
i have heard of pleco's losing both eyes...and still doing fine...
-
true...i think they are all from borneo / sumatra..... but I must say the one I got was really a steal... more than half the price of what the other shops were selling them for
-
cool... I am interested...and would help out... but we would need more interest... i am sure there are enough ppl around canterbury though
-
Just wondering with the Siamese Tigers you guys are talking about for sale...are they real Siamese Tigers? Because from what I gather... it is illegal to export Siamese Tigers from Thailand... so what we are getting now is actually mostly Indonesian (Borneo/Sumatran) Tigers or Cambodian Tigers... I think Siamese Tigers are protected species or something... quite hard to tell the difference though... some ppl around the world claim to be able to tell the difference... but I am not sure how accurate they would be...since there is no proper way to tell... some ppl say from the number of stripes on the body...some say the number of stripes on the tail...some say from the size of their eyes when they are young.... others say from the colouration... anyone on this forum know for sure?
