  1. I noticed that my skimmer wasnt working yesterday... makes a funny noise... like the propeler is having some problems... i tried opening it up and cleaning it...but same thing... this has happened before when the skimmer hasnt been cleaned for a while...and usually a good clean does the job....but this time... its not working... just wondering... what will happen to the tank if the skimmer is not working?
  2. saw the fluval 403...the starting bid is $200 !!! which is too much in my opinion... 404's selling for $350 brand new... anyway... I am bidding for the Eheim at the moment...hope i get it...
  3. Thanks for the offer robert... but I am still managing at the moment...will give u a call when i need it...
  4. yes robert that is the one i am looking at... I am really desperate for one at the moment... because my wet/dry trickle filter is broken... the propeller part of the pump keeps coming out of place and stopping.... and the only other filter I have in my tank is a small internal Rio filter... which would not be good enough for the fish I have in there... so i need to get something really soon...hope i can get the eheim
  5. Ok...need help in a decision here... I want to buy an external filter for my tank.... have been looking around...very expensive.... found a 2nd hand one for sale.... Eheim 2260 Cannister Filter.... I am thinking to buy this off someone...he wants $300 for it.... what do you guys think? About $359 would get me a brand new Fluval 404 at the moment... so how do they compare?
  6. Yes I am quite interested in the Red Devil and Midas.... dont know much about the jaguars... do you think they would be able to live along my silver arowana, oscar and borneo tiger?
  7. I really want a red belly pacu... but the fish i saw for sale is a red hook pacu or as i found in the internet red hook silver dollar....
  8. I have actually done some searching on the net and it seems as if red hook pacu is not a pacu...but red hook sliver dollar... can anyone tell me more about this? the one I am talking about would be red bellied pacu which would be different i think
  9. I am looking at buyine one of these to put in my tank... just wondering... are they much different from red belly pacu? Can anyone tell me more about them? I heard that pacu are the closest fish you can get to piranha... is this the case with red hook pacu? or is it just only red belly pacu? how big do they grow? feeding habits...etc... they also have a black line pacu or something for sale.... about $75 for the pacu's
  10. Yea Macka....feel sorry for u...how did u lose it? I thought they would be quite stable once they reach that size....25 cm would be a very big fish!
  11. Just wondering...with the water pumps... they have a tube that extends outside the tank to get air and create bubbles.... if i do not use this tube... and there are no bubbles...but the water still moves.... does it mean there is less oxygen created???
  12. 225mm with 75mm??? wow.... i have had mine for a year... it is still only about 80mm... hasn't grown much since i got it....cos it is so stubborn and picky at the food it will eat... what do yours eat?
  13. Well, I haven't been frequenting the LFS recently... went for a wee drive today and was quite impressed with what I found! Redwood Aquatics has 4 big borneo tigers for sale @ $140 each... quite cheap for the size I think... they also have gold and red arowana ranging from $1600 to $6000 I really wanted to buy the tigers... but I think it would kill my wee tiger I have at home... Pet World had a few FlowerHorns... Fish Tank had some seahorses... and their new display tanks at the back have huge fish in them... quite impressive...
  14. I got hold of some brine shrimp eggs from a friend... followed the instructions and added salt and the eggs to water... however... nothing has happened so far... does it need to be outdoors under sunlight? will it hatch seeing that it is quite cold now being winter? i have it in a pail.... so does that matter? the instructions say to use a shallow pan... but i dont see why a pail would not work... my guess is maybe the temperature and sunlight?

    green algae

dont use tap water... use water from the sea...so that cant be the problem....

    green algae

nope...not overfeeding...feed them once a week or less... sometimes once a fortnight... tank is 3 feet... protein skimmer...dont know what type... the green stuff is just like the coraline algae... it is just like colour on the live rock...not like grass or something... just like the live rock becomes green in colour...the green is a bit bright in colour

    green algae

i know the purple coloured coraline algae is good on live rock.... but i also noticed some green coloured stuff growing on some of the live rock as well...are these good????
  18. just wondering if it is ok to use the same pail and syphon to do water changes for my freshwater and marine tanks....should be ok am i right?
  19. Yup...the best places to go for marine stuff in chch would be Petworld, Organism and Redwood... I got my marine setup for around $600... got it 2nd hand.... just to start learning... it is only a small 3 ft tank.... i think it is better to start learning at a smaller scale...rather than spending $5000 on your first marine tank...and learning from that....would be very expensive....
  20. i will try and go look for some around chch... but i dunno if i will be able to find any... water down here is a lot colder as well... so they might not survive that well...no harm trying though
  21. can they survive the 25 degrees in the tank?
  22. rock pools? so i would have to go somewhere like Hanmer Springs or Muiria (spelling?) Springs ??? hmmm... would be hard to find them wouldn't it? and hard to catch?
  23. thanks... so where do i get hermit crabs? just from the beaches? will they live in the warmer water?
  24. got the pump... you dont actually connect the tube that gets oxygen do you? tried it and the pump squirted lots of air bubbles as well.... i think that is more for a freshwater tank? so i took the tube off... am i correct? where does oxygen come from in a marine tank?
