  1. Sometimes this happens with cichlids, you are best to remove one or both of them or the babies, one way to do it would be to divide the tank with a temp divider with male and female on either side so they can't harm each other, you just have to decide which one to leave with the babies Good luck!
  2. Cool video Your tank looks awesome and a nice collection of fish you have there
  3. That is a big tank I have no idea on how you would get it down here, only option I could think of would be drive a van/trailer up and get it.. lol Or befriend some truck drivers like we were talking about..
  4. Sometimes in a bigger tank with smaller fish the ammonia can build up so slowly it is actually converted and the tank cycle started before you even detect anything on your test kits
  5. Yeah I think there were prime silvers and prime pinks and dragonsbloods around at one stage.. All very similar but their were slight differences in colour, as Kylefish said maybe they just graded them at the wholesalers or sorted them according to colour and then renamed them..
  6. I can only put those plants in certain tanks I tried them in my big tank and they destroyed them all.. It also depends on the individual fish, the breed, how well fed they are and all manner of other variables. As with all advice it is hard to make a blanket statement saying africans do/don't eat plants but generally most of them will eat them
  7. Plastic ones? lol Maybe java fern or anubias?
  8. The only safe way to do it is to pay for a huge courier box, or drive up with big bins etc and grab them yourself.. I would say the risk of shipping fish increases exponentially as they get bigger, it also goes on the experience of the person shipping if they know what they are doing then you are more likely to have success..
  9. There are plenty of different strains of these around the place, I like my ones and haven't seen any that I like anymore than that so have kept them, but would like some redder ones if I could ever find them.. Mine are in a breeding tank at the moment so hopefully will have babies in the future
  10. Wonder tonic will do nothing to internal parasites. I have noticed it when alot of white or grindal worms are fish to my fish as well. Levamisole would be a good place to start, but you might have to progress onto metro/prazi.
  11. Someone just linked to this post so I thought I had better correct the dosage rate that bilbo posted above, 1ml of 23% aviverm does 115L (2mg/L) so don't do 1ml per 4L as suggested.. If you did do it at the higher rate it shouldn't hurt your fish but according to the article it has no more affect on the parasites after 2mg/L so you would just be wasting meds.
  12. I have never seen one of those being used it would be interesting to see what others say about them Personally I would just pay the extra $20 and get one of these at least you know it is good and you can get parts for them etc. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 340114.htm
  13. Yeah they might be ok only one way to find out though Do you already have the above mentioned fish?
  14. They would probably adjust, but the last ones I saw with africans were missing eyes and had nipped fins so its probably not that nice on them.. I guess it also depends what africans you are planning on keeping?
  15. Guess it is a risk you take plenty of fish come sick as from wholesalers otherwise there wouldn't be tanks filled with sick fish in petshops.. Snow white zebra is about as accurate as any made up common name based on the fishes colour and shape not accurate at all.. It probably doesn't matter to you as you won't be breeding from them but I always like to try and find out what fish actually are..
  16. Cool fish, they should add a different colour to your tank and look good with the yellows and dems.. Did you quarantine them at all before adding them? Would hate for them to be carrying bugs and have your tank fall over.. Do you have any idea what they actually are? I mean Pseudotropheus isn't even used and they are basically saying they are some sort of snow white zebra?
  17. That is an interesting article how did you find that? I think they are naturally supposed to have 6 or 7 stripes from the lake but hard to tell really..
  18. They all come from the same place originally..
  19. ryanjury

    new tank

All of those fish are zebras of some sort, orange/pink ones are probably red zebras the others who really knows but they look cool You can add all sorts of african cichlids to the mix with these guys but I would steer towards more mbuna (zebras, demasoni, yellows, melanachromis etc) and maybe haps or if you can find them big male peacocks so they can actually stand upto the zebras aggression..
  20. Just in case anyone doesn't already know there is no meeting at the end of this month due to it falling on labour weekend and everyone being away
  21. lol this one is an 8 striper! It is beginning to look like we have a mix of all sorts in nz http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 517491.htm
  22. It is really hard to id zebras and unless you purchased them as afra then please don't go and rename them and start breeding and selling them as afra.. There are plenty of afra crosses out there that may throw back resembling them.. Yeah I would say hybrid zebra for the zebras as well so continue to sell them as blue zebras with no scientific name and you are admitting that anyway so essentially it doesn't matter what they breed with..
  23. Is there any chance you can not resize the photos as much the bottom 3 are really small.. I also noticed in the photo that was big of the dolphins that there is a heap of random zebras in the tank, is that the tank you are breeding in?
  24. If you want to really make it look good go with all dark rocks and substrate, and buffer with limestone etc rocks burried or hidden at the back or coral sand in stockings. It really brings out the colours of the fish.. BTW I agree nice looking tank, but I can see why you would like an upgrade
  25. lol awesome mate I think everyone can see that you just asked the question that was asked.. I just asked as a guy I know is looking to get it for the NZ market as an affordable alternative to NLS so was hoping it was pretty good, I think he is hoping to have some to trial soonish too so hoping it works out well, is it your main food for your fish? And do you mainly feed the cichlid formula?
