    peat

Ive been using Hauraki Gold peat for the last two years. In fact ive just finished the big yellow bag and need to get some more. First I siv the peat to take out sticks and stones, feathers and all other large foreign matter. Then I boil the peat in my partners best pot and rinse it in a net untill there is minimal dirt colour being squeezed out of the peat. I find that its alot easier to remove as much dirt as possible because when it comes to hatching you can see newly born fry alot easier in clear water. Cheers Tim in 'The Fishroom'

    Dissapointing

It would great if even 1 LFS in New Zealand had a 'KILLI CORNER'. Killies are becoming a hot option for new and old aquarists ITS ANOTHER KILLI WAVE.....................CATCH IT :-)
  4. Want some free killies? :-)
  5. My King Killies suck them down faster than a lizard licking :-) Daddy Long legs seem to really help with breeding!! Ox heart, in my opinion is the best Tim
  6. Hi. Of course Id give you a deal for purchasing multiple killies :-) Probably best to look at what I have on Trademe and then let me know what you want. Also probably best tp PM me from now on ay!! :-) Cheers Tim
  7. Hi. I would probably suggest the striatum killi in the first instance as they are in my opinion one of the most colourful tropicals on the market in NZ. You cant go wrong with gardneri nigeriatum and australe chocolates. For something a little more special I'd definately suggest king killies. They are a real eye catcher. Tim
  8. Your question snookie is?

    Killie tank size

Its probably ok to seal the containers but why? and it will take between 10-15 days for those eggs to hatch out. Remember to take out fungused eggs as soon as you see them on a daily basis. Im also assuming you have the eggs in a diluted meth blue solution (1 drop to 500ml of tank water)? Good luck and keep me up to date. Cheers Tim

    Killie tank size

Gidday mate. Id throw thoughs striatum's together for a week at a time now with a spawning mop or two and check for eggs daily. Seperate them for a following week etc etc. Next time you are over this way I'll show you my notho breeding setup. Basically just put a hole about the size of a milk bottle top in a margerine lid and fill the pot with boiled and washed peat. Dont worry about peat spilling into the tank as it will also be laid in. I add a polished stone, preferably greenstone, to weigh the pot down. Let the fish spawn for two weeks and then squeeze the peat in a net. Use the force that you would use to throttle/spank your kids.... ooops, cant say that anymore.... Ok just make sure the peat is really damp. bag it up and store it at around 25 deg c for 3 months. Im finding the gardneri blues really hard to spawn in the sense that the eggs keep fungasing up. I have doubled the amount of meth blue they are incubating in ( 2drops per 500ml) and keeping them in a darker space. Cheers Tim
  11. Killies should always, where possible, be spawned in a seperate breeding tank. Cheers Tim

    Killie tank size

What you have built is great. I want one. Perfect for breeding. Its like stopping off at a motel for the night, doing the business a couple of times, and leaving in the morning. How much would you do me one for? A tank that is :-) Cut to dimenions for the bunning stands that you use as well of course. Maybe a trade in killies for tank would interest you mate? Cheers Tim
  14. I bring my peat to the boil and then rinse it very well. Doing it this way reduces the amount of dirt in the water and makes it easy to still see the parents in the tank and even easier when hatching out fry. Tim

    high jump

Id love to enter 1 of my male SJO's in the jumping comp. He will win hands down. You could also have a comp for the killi that jumps the furtherest away from its tank in 5min's. They are still alive and kicking after that time period, believe me :-) With regards to the degati fry and your concerns re when they will start jumping?................Just leave it uncovered and when the first couple jump out you will know its time to move them to a bigger covered tank. Hey its not as if they only lay a couple of eggs a day ay :-) Cheers Tim
  16. Hi I have replacements for all of the above. 15 species in total :-) Cheers Tim
  17. Ru joking. Ive just put in another 20 tanks!!! I feel another fishroom coming on. Just have to win lotto now Tim
  18. Hi. I have plenty of yellows if shes not fussy. Cheers tim

    Wish list

Hi, For a number of us it has become both 'commercial' and a hobby with the goal of preserving what killies we have in NZ and also reintroducing species as well as adding to the list, with MAF's approval of course. (trying not to be too PC!!!!) The great thing about killies is that 99% of all known species are colourful or patterned in an unusal way. Cheers Tim phone 02102333888

    Wish list

Hi, Im prepared to pay what ever it takes, with in reason  , to get some of the species back into nz that have died off. Basically if you can provide a list of killies you can get and MAF approves the import of them, I will write you a cheque. If you need a list I will work with other NZKA members who have the knowledge and decades of experience with these fish. Cheers Tim

    agressive?

Hi, Ive just spent a couple of hours seperating 100+ males from females. The females are alot more placid so I catch them first. Also had a female jump on my head only to find it an hour later Tim
  22. Hi. How many do you want? Cheers Aquanut
  23. I bet you they are degati. Throw the whole mop into a small seperate tank with an airstone and leave it for 10+ days. Every day lift the mops up and give them a little shake at the same time. You will see the degati fry easily. Cheers Aquanut
