  1. Hi All I have noticed that one of my Melanochromis is Ovigerious and was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to get a good survival rate of the fry as this is the first time I've had mouthbrooders spawn. Thanks for any HELP
  2. I seeded my wet/dry by cleaning a sponge filter in the tank and seems to have worked as I now have 18 fish in the tank and tests come up a 0ppm for amonia (don't know if I spelt that right. I'm guessing no) but anyhow its all good. All the fish are as happy as all buzzing round scrapping eating digging and all that stuff that africans love to do.
  3. Would be interested to hear how oscar shelia would do it......
  4. have got 10 25mm electric yellow labs doing the cycling.
  5. I have a unusual question which is common for me.... I have just set up a 500 litre malawi tank and has been cycling for about a week. The other night I noticed that the last chamber of the wet/dry where the pump returns the water back to the tank has a thick layer of protein or something on top of it. It is clear and not really visable but when there is any bubbling or the like the bubbles just remain there. Can anyone help me with wot this is and if its a problem how I can stop it from happening. Thanks for any help in advance. Steve )
  6. How the hell do you catch julie marleri fry had several sessions and still have an empty net and grow out tank. Any suggestions gratefully acccepted.

  8. Hi Peter How big are these limestone chips and where do you get them from as they could be a good substrate for my african tank also what are they worth
  9. Hi All I was thinking of using sand as substrate in my african tank but have heard stories about being anaerobic and causing gas that can stink and kill the fish. Can anyone help me with anything they know on using sand as a substrate. Cheers for any Help Steve
  10. Oh O.K Well now I know it won't annoy me anymore. Thanks again for the tip on gravel. By the way the plant tank you helped me with is growing really well and all the fish seem to be happy the kribs have even spawned. The Cabomba, well thats what I think it is is doulbling in height every few days have had to cut it down three times in three weeks.
  11. Thanks Warren will give them a try. By thye way what is your Avatar a picture of everytime I see it I have a real close look and can never figure it out???
  12. Thanks Pegasus Is the gravel smooth as alot of the stuff they use is quite sharp isnt it??? I want it for african cichlids who as you know like to do a bit of the digging and also catch food in it so do want anything they will hurt themselves on.
  13. Where I can find any Melanchromis Johanni (electric blue johanni) or Psuedotropheus Socolofi (powder blue) these are Malawi Mbuna. If so please message me. From anywhere in New Zealand is O.K if the person is prepared to courier fish.
  14. Hi Ira. Thanks for the reply but you never did say where you got it from...
  15. Hi All can anyone help as to where I can find some fine gravel in the size of about 1 to 2mm in size. I live in Hastings so somewheren local would be better. If not anywhere else can be looked at also. Thanks in advance for any help Steve
  16. Thanks Midas wondered if the pressure of it being underwater made the pump struggle like it was pumping water uphill. In otherwords Head.
  17. :-? Hi All was wondering if anyone knew, If you buy a submersible pump that pumps say 486 gph at 2ft of head does it also mean that if it is submerged 2ft under the water it will pump 486 gph or will it pump the 642 gph that it can pump at 0 ft of head. Hope that made sense and very interested in hearing from anyone who knows. Thanks Steve
  18. This place has cheaper Eheim pumps than anywhere else that I have seen and if you E Mail them they can other ones that are not listed on the web site. I brought one from them and it was all good, dealt through Andre Billington in Taupo.http://www.stylespc.com/list.asp?product=Pumps
  19. Speaking of Kribs I brought a pair yesterday, and man are they hot to trot. The female is showing off and arching to the male and they are both having convulsions at each other they are funny to watch. I think they are ready to spawn as the females belly is as rosy as and she just keeps on showing off to the male who gives her a little peck when she does. So may have some Krib fry soon also. Have heard that the first spawn usally doesnt end up with any fry though, as they are still learning.
  20. Have heard differing reports on which is bigger the male or the female seems to be a 50/50 split from info on the ineternet. Will have to check for the fin detail that brock05 mentioned as I am still confused as to which of mine is male and female as not sure if they are the same ages. :-?
  21. Hi kriber the only reason I know the hardness is that I got the local concil to send me a water parameters read out. If you ring yours they would probably do the same for you. I think that 100 caco3 is reasonably soft but I'm the same as you, I'm only just starting to learn about these things as I have to now that I'm starting to set a malawi tank. My pair are as follows. Female well so I've been told is about 7cm and the male is only little at about 4cm but thats how it works with these fish the females are the larger ones. They are dam near impossible to sex unless you vent them and I dont know much about doing that so its just hope for the best. I brought 5 fish from my lfs and I've had them for about two years now so it took a while befroe they were comfortable enough to breed. Also putting in lots of rockwork for them helped I think as they live in amongst in the wild and feel comfortable with caves etc to hide in. Hope this helps.
  22. Hi Andrew. Fry seem to be doing well so far so will keep that in mind how many were you and your friend after???
  23. Hi Kriber sorry I posted a reply but I must have stuffed it up as its not there. The water conditions are as follows pH is about 7.5 i know this is low for tangs but thats what they were in when I brought them so thats what I've left them at. The hardness is just tap hardness which is about 100caco3. And the wriggling sounds familiar thats what mine were up to a week or so before my fry appeared. Sorry bout the late replky again
  24. Just wondering Caryl how you can call something without wings a fly do you not need wings to fly?????
