  1. However seeing as its 80sq metres though bigger oscars will do a far better job than little ones, not only will they eat more they will eat more often
  2. Thats right. Post it in here and dont expect too much from people like Hummingbird, google has alot of info! But keep trying and dont let people like hummingbird turn you away from this website. Good luck!
  3. Take one saucepan 50 ml of canola oil and heat for 5 mins Take fish and fry for 30 seconds on each side, garnish with a rind of lemon and a little parsley, the fish should now be ready for consumption. jokes Sorry to hear about that mate, I had the exact same thing happen to one of my fish and was told it was an infection, but cannot remember the name of the problem nor the product I was told to purchase. I didnt buy it though as the muppet in the LFS was too vague. It actually corrected itself and after 3 days had gone. The fish is very healthy now. May want to leave it a few days before stressing, however the experts in here may know more, and maybe it needs urgent attention. Good luck matey
  4. I used to freak, however let the algae go mad over the rocks! not only does it look natural (like what you would see on rocks in a freshwater lake) the fish just love it and everybody comments on how great it looks to see the cichlids, biting bits off the rocks and eating it. It looks fantastic, let it grow wild mate, just clean the glass every few days! 8)
  5. big oscars, big oscars, big oscars
  6. I see my cichlids with stringy poo sometimes and then it goes and wont return for a few weeks some at all, never had any problems and they all look very very healthy
  7. I miss my convicts. Became fish food not long after being introduced
  8. mine were doing this then the female started holding. After two days she had been giving such a hiding from the kenyi and male elec yellow she hid under a rock so much that she got stuck and the others finished her off, if the female is holding and in a fairly aggresive tank and you want either her or the fry to stay alive, take my advice and remove her into a suitable tank with same conditions and watch closely
  9. kinda scary doing the first strip then, i better do some research
  10. thats what i mean tho, she dsnt seem to keep them long enuf
  11. My elec yellow has eggs in her mouth every month or so but i find after 4-5 days they are gone, must be getting scared from the bullies in the tank, i am keen to try this stripping next time, but wonder, how do i know if the male has already done his job?

    Black Sand

I know I have asked this before but had a failry vague reply. I understand the black sand from the west coast beach of Piha has a fairly high iron content and have been told it may make the water fairly acidic (PH around 6.0) and this is no good for my Mbuna, so what I really want to know is: 1 - can this be countered by adding oyster grit and ph increasing/buffering things 2 - has anybody ever done it in a cichlid aquarium 3 - are there any other changes to water parameters that I should know about??? Thanks in advance
  13. Thats a shame, just read the post and wont post images again, thats a shame about your connection tho!
  14. Shows a little bit of the colour, I should get some more for better comparison against other fish, fish is def orange coloured now and fins and black, yellow and orange! looks awesome. This pics about 4 weeks old, he has changed heaps since then
  15. Whats the deal with fish shops buying fish that you have bred? Im in Auckland and have some breeding and want to sell them to LFS's if possible. Whats the best angle for these people?

    Light??

depends entirely on what you keep in your tank
  17. sweet im sure my mrs will fry em - excuse the pun
  18. cull them? And the most humane way to do this is...? Puting them to sleep in the fridge is my best guess? (Do this with crayfish)
  19. I see! Cool, might need a pleco or bristlenose to assist, if they eat that brown algae
  20. na the rocks are harder to clean than u think, the look smooth however the algae needs to be removed with a scrubber or toothbrush of some sort. If it needs to be removed or will eventually dissapear on its own, I dont mind pulling them out however im sure its only bound to come back again.
  21. OK so should I let this grow all over my rocks or should I treat it with chemicals? I dont like the look of poo brown rocks. However if its beneficial or I should keep it in the Malawi tank, please let me know. Cheers N
  22. i did want to but now knowing that she is a very light one and an unusual colour for yellow lab there is prob no point in trying to breed her, just got another wee one in the weekend however the male is 4 times her size! so will see what happens!

    Black Sand

What are your thoughts on using black sand from some of the west coast beaches Piha and Muriwai for example. I recall on previous experiments at school this type of sand was attracted to magnets. High iron content I think... Would it be ok in a malawi tank, or is black sand a big no no? never seen anybody use it
