    Discus eggs

Ok guys, don't know what it is i have done (or maybe not done?) but it worked. I came home today to find out 70 wrigglers on the cone with mum and dad gaurding pretty intensely. Haha awsome, this is tripple what they normally get to they wriggler stage! Temp is around 29-30. I havent touched the water since they laid a few days ago so it has gone green. Trying to do small water changes often to get rid of it but not sure if it will work...any ideas people? Its damn annoying as i cant see the fry haha Like I said I'm not sure if what i changed worked or whether the pair just got it right this time but thanks to everyone for their ideas and input as somethings gone right finally. Cheers again, Shane

Cool thanks guys. Temp is up to about 30, 31 now and have added another airstone not too far from where they lay and have blocked their view of the neighbouring tank so hopefully next time they will do a lot better. I will let ya know what happens...

    The Gold Nugget

Hey WOW thats an awesome looking fish dude! haha nice to see he's still kickin (flappin...whatever?) I think its L018, just goin off the others that i have owned etc Shane
  5. They will be sweet in that tank mate its huge compared to the size of them. I reckon its funny how all of these similar looking fish have different names, yellow seam, orange seam etc when I am sure they are just gold nuggets. That name covers quite a few different L numbers. Awesome looking fish though dude, all the best with them. Shane
  6. Have to agree with evil on this one, change too much and you will just undo all the good work you tank has already done. Enjoy your tank though its sounds really nice
  7. Hey mate nice plecs you got there! did you get them locally? Funny how similar the two different species look aye
  8. Rad tank dude, nice looking discus to, well done

    Discus eggs

Cheers guys, Ron, according to the person i got them off they should be about 16 months old, the mineral content thing did cross my mind but though i should try other things first, they are only in a 60L tank at the mo until i get my other tank back, they are in a tank by themselves in a pretty quiet corner and i am just using a sponge filter in their tank. Sharn, yeah i basically stop doin water changes until the fry go free swimming and i hate using strong meds so prob wont do that anyway. I would rather change their environment etc first. Haha right on smidey ....few issues at home perhaps? like i said aye i think the eggs are fertilised as they turn the right colour and always start turning bad mainly on the second day, surely if they wern't fertile they would start turning bad pretty soon after they were laid Hey blue, i will try blocking their view of the closest tank to try keep their minds on the job. Its only a small tank to so i dont mind doing the water changes, cant do them any harm can it? thanks guys
  10. Yeah thats all clear as day, well not today it was bloody miserable (sorry, i work outside!) Might have to go see ol phil then If i had a camera that took decent pics and i could figure out how to post pics i definately would
  11. Ok thanks mate. might try the natural look first. Awesome looking tank by the way to and nice fish, dont really see them in the pet stores
  12. Hey thanks for that guys, do you reckon bare bottom or a fine gravel/sand would be better or does it not really matter and is just relative to the look you are goin for? Yeah they are rad little fish, i put the viejitas in with my discus and panaques etc and was worried they would freak out as they monster over the dwarf cichlids but no way after a day they are out front of the tank fighting the plecs for food and chasing eachother around its funny to see. Thanks again

    Discus eggs

Ok cheers for that Luke. I tried meth blue last time and though it was goin to work but nope, today most of the eggs went white so they ate the lot, should lay again in a few days so i will up the temp. Can you get formalin from pet shops? I have never used it before. Thanks again dude
  14. Ok i have this pair of discus and they always lay and always take good care of their eggs and fry but i always have a problem with the eggs turning white. I only ever get around 10-25 fry which i know isn't bad but it just seems a waste of so many more possible fry. The eggs always seem to be fertile having the nice dark glow to them. First day a few eggs may fungus/turn white then the second day most of them crap out. They have a pretty good diet,80% water changes everyday with rain water so dont check the water for ph etc? temp bout 29 Any thoughts, cheers guys
  15. Ok guys i couldn't resist and really should have looked into it a bit more but thought what the hell... Got myself a pair of panduro, a pair of hongsloi and a few viejita dwarf cichlids and have them all in a couple of different tanks geting on fine etc but just wondered what the best way to go about breeding them is. How big a tank do you need?, fish ratio, pairs?, trios? etc. What decor they prefer and so on. I have a rough idea but thought a few of you nice people out there could give me a few tips. This could even be a good place to show of your dwarf cichlid tank pics? Neat little fish buy the way and thought it was about time i tried something new, Cheers guys
  16. I had a foot long fire eel and a 15cm fire eel and a 20cm tyre track all living together sweet, i think you just have to watch them especially at night to see if they get on. Trial them, if they dont work just whip one out and set up another tank for it haha

    The Gold Nugget

Ahhhhhhh...well actually.......it diddnt. it was on its last legs when phil found it, bit too late. I didnt think it was a good idea but hey he was sure it would work? Waste of an awesome fish if you ask me

    The Gold Nugget

Yeah thats another angle to, thing is though how are you going to pick a male and female pair? another thought haha I dont have my panaques anymore, just kept my favourite one. Sold the biggest to phil collis and it basically killed his panaque that he imported? Think the tank he had them in was way to small but anyway i think he still has it if anyone wants it haha :-?

    The Gold Nugget

Yeah they are very aggressive in general but like any species each fish is different. I have had 3 nuggets and each was different, two got on ok as long as they had enough hiding places and my other one was agro as. I couldnt even keep him with my mango plec, which is basically the same type of plec but just a different colour. I reckon aslong as you introduce them all at the same time and cram the tank full of caves etc it might work, sounds like you will have a big enough tank to do this with. One idea i had was that they are like discus, have around 6 or more and the aggression is spread throughout the group, but who has enough money to try this? Just a thought as it worked for my royal panaques which can also be quite an agro fish Shane

    The Gold Nugget

I think if someone was to breed them here there would be a pretty decent market for them. Lots of people want these fish but just cant afford the price tag of the imported ones. Locally bred would be a lot cheaper and look at the comments you have had about your nugget on here, people love them, so i dont think it would be a hard fish to sell. I read about some guy that bred them by accident ( lucky #@*%) but cant remember what size they were. I have heard that a rough guide for fancy plecs is that they will breed at around half or just over half of their max size. So if nuggets max out about 30cm maybe 15cm or so, just a guess. Males have the spines though and every fish i have seen in pics with spines looks huge. Just a bunch of thoughts really haha. Goodluck with it mate

    The Gold Nugget

I dont think it would really matter dude. If you were to breed nuggets (cross bred or not) you would be a legend anyway. They have to be pretty big before they breed tho and fish that size just arent available here. You would just have to wait a long long time for them to get to the right size. I'm sure some of the three species would interbreed given the chance
  22. I'm sure they will forgive ya
  23. Cut back a bit but this is what i have now...i think -6 upside down cats -3 oto ( usual ones that you see) -6 red finned otos -1 royal panaque -5 flash plecs -1 snowball ( L102) if anyone knows of a male please let me know -1 snowball ( L201?) -1 gold nugget (for sale if anyone is keen) -1 mango/magnum plec -8 Royal whiptails -2 white whiptails? -3 GBA -2 albino bn Think thats every thing
