So I need to get those plants to clear up the tank???????????

I do have real plants in the tank but I have noticed the water being a bit warmer?! I live in Central Otago and its a lot hotter these days. Would that have anything to do with it???

Ok, have had my goldfish tank set up since April, since July I have had it cycling wonderfully, doing weekly changes etc. I test ph, but nothing else. I have noticed that in the last 3 weeks my tank has had a green tint, have done more changes etc, but it still has the green tint????????? Any ideas appreciated, I dont use algae rid or any chemicals at all??

If several fish have died without no apparent reason, it is more than likely a water condition that needs looked into. Overcrowding, temperature changes, and aeration needs attention as well. When people start out with their first aquarium they tend to overfeed their fish. This uneaten food rots in the gravel below and causes the bacteria to buildup and throws the ammonia into toxic levels as well as changes the pH, nitrites. This rapid buildup can deplete oxygen and eventually suffocate the fish. If you have a small tank and the fish were fine and now are dead, you may need to see what the water conditions are as well as ask yourself if you are overfeeding the fish. How much water and how often? I have been doing regular changes about twice a week of around 20%, it that right?? :bounce:

Could I use the heat gun, and still maintain good visability?? We have one and I want to do it

I use them too occasionaly because I thought they were a good idea if you didnt have air going into your tank, so thats wrong then?????

I really wanted it to look a lot like a normal tv thats all, and I thought the acrylic bulging a bit would look a bit more realistic.

I am making a tank inside an old TV as explained in the rest of the thread, I thought acrylic would be good as suggested by someone in here because it could be moulded to bulge out a little like the old television. I was under the impression that normal silicone would be sufficient to join the sides :-?

so are you guys saying oxy shells are a bad idea, reid uses them and only them in her tank, would you advise her not too??? :-?

I dont think I am think either, I have heard that some acrylics are lower grade or too thin and may warp with the heat from the heater I am wondering what would be the correct thickness of acrylic required for my tank??

I only have a ph tester because as yet I have been unable to afford a complete testing kit from our LFS, and they would have to get one in for me at an additional cost, when the ph has been high or low I have always done a water change is that adequate enough in the mean time. Oh and thank you caryl for you awesome response (as usual ) you have explained the process very well

I have my fish in it and they are swimming beautifully, thank you So if they are all good and well then the tank is cycling well?? (Blonde question huh?? :oops: )

What width is the correct type of acrylic to use with heaters and where would we source it??? ANYONE??

Just curious I've read lots of the stuff about cycling and doing regular checks, but how do you know for a fact when you tank is cycling properly?? What are the signs??

As some of you know hubby and I are about to build a new tank and we were going to use acrylic to make the tank, however while just browsing Trademe just now came across the comment that acrylic was only safe for goldfish?? ANd not to be used for tropicals. Just need someone to clarify that for me :-? :-?
