We're fairly new to this hobby/pastime, but we had two female gold gourami and one bullied the other to the point where she wouldn't come out from behind the filter unless she was chased out.
We took the dominant one back and put in a blue, an opaline and a pearl gourami. The gold took a couple of days to get used to the others, but has now stopped hiding and mingles nicely. She still has the odd nip at the blue, but we have a 4 foot tank with lots of hiding places and none are very stressed at the moment.
A couple of the people I have talked to, say the golds are a bit more aggressive than the others, and ours is definitely the dominant one, but she loves our pearl gourami and the tank seems to be a fairly happy place for all. We also have two small plecos, 10 neons and four clown loaches in there.
Perhaps a few more dwarf gourami in your tank will make your one feel less stressed and bring him/her out of her funky mood.
Good Luck!
