    Water Tests

No one? Alk 3.6 Ca 260 Have dosed Reef Complete and will monitor very closely
  2. Reef Builders for raiseing Carbonate Alkalinity what you need is reef complete but test first. I heard some good advice the other day. "dont add anything you dont test for". Thats good advice

    Water Tests

Hi Guys and girls Well I have a little story. I havnt been testing my tank at all. Right from the first day I set it up.This is my secound marine and ive had discus etc for years. And Ive had good success with all coarls ive put in . I have been getting more into the hard corals but have a mixture of soft and hards etc a bit of every thing. So i got reading and thought i would add a calcium supplement. I picked Red sea reef success Calk with a free alkalinity test kit. Well it worked very well but was getting exspensive when it finished i thought i would try some other products. So i bought A seachem product reef complete which is a calcium supplement with out testing Calcium. Then my coraline algae started to go white!!! So i did a water change which has helped a heap. It all starting to look alot better. Then I did a test yesterday on the alkalinity it was low 2.0 so I added Reef builder which Raises carbonate alkalinity. So today I bought a Ca test kit. Want to Guess what my alk and ca are reading ? Before adding anything tonight. PS all products I have spoken about are very good. Its just the goose adding them thats the problem
  4. along time ago I had a pair of maroons. But they got to territorial they started to bite corals They had to go very aggressive I was scared to put my hand in the tank. And then when I went to removed them I had to pull the whole tank apart. No fun . Partly my fault at the time I didn't realize how big they got so the tank was smaller than they really needed. If I was them I would bite me to. Reef rule 101 read about the fish before you buy them...
  5. I cant add it up scared the wife would see. And that would be a devorce or I would have to spend the same amount on her. I dont want to buy her a new car or small plane I have fish stuff to buy
  6. Funny thing happened I thought i would give them one more chase. This lasted a hour. Then the lights went out so I chased a little more and bang straight into it!! Thanks for the help . Think it could be time to buy another manderin yehaaaaa !!!!
  7. Mmmm some good advice. I chased them for a hour last night but no luck. So plan B I will make something to keep them close to the BT. Thanks for the advice will keep you posted :bounce:
  8. I'm going nuts I have tried so hard to get my clowns into a BT but they wont go. I know its ok (The BT)because I had one in there before(Untill the last clown made a jump for it  ) Its driving me nuts!! I also lost my mandarin it was getting so fat and looked so good  I'm sure the bubble tip ate it. If only the clowns had been in there . They have paired up and like to hang by the glass and keep it clean. Do I need a smooth rock near the BT? Help im at my wits end. Im seriously thinking of trading them all in and getting another Mandarin.
  9. Nice school of chromis. The beauty of a large tank hail:
  10. 1,What you do is find info from other sources to back up your side of the argument That doesn't mean its accurate at all. 2 You Do 3 You Do 4You will try to find something to disprove the other person. But what really matters is how it is based. Is it from your experience No its not I agree with the others in that I would like to hear about first hand experience. Which can be backed up with results. From personal experience with a open mind from experience not some research from some one else. The nets a big place if you look you can find some one who has a PhD to back up anything. To me it doesn't match experience theory and practical are very different.
  11. First I would like to say Amazing tank reeftec. It is a truly beautiful tank. Congratulations on the hard work and planning that you have put in. As you can see from our posts filtration is an area of hot debate. I guess its the same world wide? I have a couple of questions that I would like to ask. Here in New Zealand I would say zeovit has a good following but it hasn't become mainstream. How big is it over there? I guess you would get a lot of questions about the DSB. With a lot of zeovit tanks being BB. Do you find any advantage or disadvange with it? PS Any reply on the comments made about DSBs and Zeovit? based on personal experience. As you can see on the previous page there is a lot of misinformed or maybe over informed? Information about Zeovit and DSB Once again thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.
  12. I second that!!!! Layton your quick to put down DSB we all see your dislike for them from your comments . show us you tank  . By the way there are plenty of DSB tanks that have been running for ten plus years with no stirring you need to do your homework As you chemical lessons don't cut it.And if you do show some pics make sure they are yours this time!!!

Has anyone in NZ done this? Think of the money you could save. Would it work? I see a few on other sites and have been thinking about this not as the only source of light but as the main one. With maybe some VHO fluros? Should pay for itself? Just getting the wife to let me put a hole in the roof could be a problem and from what I can see you need to get the dome with no uv filter?
  17. Thanks For sharing :bounce: Makes me think about lighting when you see how deep the corals are in the photos and the growth. Been looking at the skytubes etc and thinking there might be something in it?
  18. you shouldnt be thats a nice tank you have there Infact i like all the tanks. More Pics More Pics
  19. My first attempt at posting a pic. This was back in april. Heaps more growth since then and some new corals. One for the DSB club Think i could be the only member?
  20. Im a little confused ? How do you get your tank to sit at 8.2 24 hours a day? :-?
  21. Layton Im not saying to use this as a method to dose your tank. Only as a supplement. The main reason for the DSB for me is NNR. but I do want to read more on Where can I read more on that?
  22. Hi Ghostface i think what your doing is verygood. One of the principal benefits to deep sand bed methodologies is the potential for natural nitrate reduction (NNR). The speed and extent to which a DSB can reduce nitrate in an aquarium amazes many aquarists… especially those that have struggled with nitrate control for any length of time through other means. The benefits to an established tank with the upgrade to a DSB are apparent in just a few weeks with potential for complete nitrate reduction (to “zeroâ€)!Anthony Calfos words not mine. And every thing i have read says the same thing about the buffering layton is correct in saying that bacteria dissolve it within their micro environments but there is no deniying the facts that it has been proven with out a doubt to buffer water giving a more stable ph and better alkalinty aragonite is to be favored for it’s better solubility and buffering capacity in seawater (providing necessary bio-minerals, buffering pH, and supporting calcification). Aragonite can begin to dissolve, in fact, at a high pH over 8.0 (a still safe level for marine life), Ps i do the same thing but have it in my display tank !!!
  23. A fan does a really good job but you will get more evaporation. So not so good if your not around unless you have a large topup system? You could run it on a timer ? Just a cheaper option . Mine only gets hot for around a month so I use the fan I cant justify the cost of a chiller.
