  1. I agree with jim r on the ph. I got rain water from my parents to do water changes. It came out of a concrete tank and the ph level was over 8.

    A Casualty

Yeah Mystic I suppose so. It's been fine for the past six months, I guess there was just to much action to be had and it all came to a head. It's all good.

That's it, nothing is stronger than nature. What can we do!

    A Casualty

Came home home from work Friday to find an Electric Yellow male dead in the tank. There were also 2 females holding,so I'm guessing this fish lost out in a fight to the death over breeding rights. He was one of 2 males in with 6 females. You would think that was enough to go around wouldn't you?
  6. Do you mean for the water to flow straight down from the outlet pipe? And why? I have the same system in my discus tank.

    Tetra Tank

My brother had neons before and had trouble with them,I even told my young bloke that prior to buying. Got to the shop and forgot about that. Not to worry, still up in the air now. Might just take my boy to the lfs and let him choose.Easy way out. It is "his" tank after all.

I'll just stick with the neons for now then. Thanks guys

    Tetra Tank

I was only thinking of a bit of colour in the tank. But a good size school and plenty of movement would be just as effective. The types I saw today, well there were to many to remember. There were blue, green, gold maybe, cardinal, glowlight.

    Tetra Tank

I have just changed my young blokes 32 litre goldfish tank to a tropical tank.I have a dwarf gourami and some neon tetra in it at the moment. While I was at the lfs today I notice they have all sorts of tetra's. My question is, do all the tetra get along if we were to put some of more than one variety in the tank? Are there any to avoid? They seem peaceful and I'm sure it would be fine,,but it costs nothing to ask the question.
  11. It has taken this long but the sick discus came to the top of the tank for a feed this arvo.(first time I have seen it eat properly. I end up treating the whole tank with Trichlorfon because the sick fish was breathing through one gill and clamping the other one shut,so was treating for gill fluke.Must have been the problem. All is good. Thanks again for your help. Greg
  12. I did intend taking a pic,but slipped my mind and have cleaned the tank now.
  13. After isolating the offending fish with white fluffy poos and treating with Metro I notice when checking the fish this arvo(5 days after starting treatment)what looks like a worm probably the size of a match stick on the bottom of the tank. Does this sound right? I am hoping this was the problem with this fish and things will get back to how they should be.
  14. Have checked the fish this morning and it is breathing normally and through both gills. Still not eating tho'. Haven't really seen it eat anything decent in the 2 weeks I have had it.It was taking food in and then spitting it out again. It swims around and most of the time it swims with the other fish, only sometimes will it sit alone but the other fish do that as well. Still looks healthy enough too,not thin. ??????
  15. The white fluffy poos seem to have gone from my ill fish, but now I have noticed it is breathing through the one gill. In a sticky that Caryl has in the disease section this would be a symtom of gill fluke. Still not eating either.Doesn't look thin tho'. Gills could be a bit red as well, but a bit hard to tell with it being a white fish. Have just finished a lot of reading on this site and a few others and it all gets to confusing. What do I treat with???? Have a vet friend that is getting me a few meds, prazi or droncit and trying for some furan 2 too. I have metro from a previous ill fish, should I dose with this for now till other meds arrive? What other meds would be good to have on hand, as I have access to them?
  16. I redid the tank for the discus, new gravel.some plants(changed from Africans) I had it with only the loaches and b/n in it waiting for the discus,so I'm guessing it came on the discus. When I went to get the white spot meds at the lfs,I checked the tank they were in and I reckon I could see the odd spot on the discus in there. So I let them know.
  17. That's why I said I may need a new thermometer,it says 29 and has done for a week. Will get another one tomorrow and see what it reads. Might try for a pic later, just going to do a water change now. My loaches don't look like the one in that link, thank goodness.
  18. Thanks guys most helpful as always. LYNDYLOO, Had to start another post, the other one was getting a bit crowded. Thanks again.
  19. For the white spot I am using Aqua master Rapid white spot remedy, tank is at 29 degrees, may need a better thermometer because the white spot is still there. Other fish in the tank are 2 clown,1 yo-yo loach and 2 b/n. Is it worth taking the loaches out and treating separately at 1/2 strength so I can treat the tank at full strength? Or just keep on the 1/2 strength and raise the temp to the 32 as you said flosty? Only asking because it has been 1 week now have been treating the tank. I did a search on the forums to find out about the "white fluffy poos" and the use of metro, so only going on info from the people on this great site.
  20. I am currently treating my discus for white spot, which has cleared from the discus but is still on the clown loaches in with them.So still treating. One of the discus has white fluffy poo,and after asking the question yesterday and searching the forums,it would appear I need to treat this fish with Metrogyl. Is it safe to treat the tank for both diseases at the same time or do I need to separate the offending fish and treat separately. When is the right time to do a water change when treating for whitespot? Have done 2 in the week treating, and re-dosed after each change. Don't know if this is the right thing to do, but I had to, to much poo on the bottom of the tank. Couldn't stand to see it there.

    My First Discus

The leopards are feeding really well, but the white one is only picking off the bottom of the tank. The white one picks at the spiralina flake and the leopards love the blood worm.None go for the colour bits still.Hope they aren't going to be that fussy. The white one is pooing white, what is it's problem?
  22. Bloodworms and colour bits are their diet atm.Feed in the morning then a couple of times in the evening. They are yet to have a go at the colour bits, even tho that is what the lfs said they were eating in the shop. The bloodworms as I said before they eat 1/4 of a cube(feeding 1/2 a cube at a time till I get an idea of what goes on) between them and then the Bristlenose and clown loaches get the rest.Might just feed small amounts,a few times like has been mentioned. Only had the fish 5 days, doing a 2nd water change today but will do 2-3 a week as there isn't a lot in the tank at all.
  23. You talk about feeding until they are full. As I am new to discus what is considered a feed for one discus? Mine have settled in well now and feeding nicely, even hand feeding after 4 days, but between the 3 of them they might eat 1/4 of bloodworm square.Body size is around 8cm. Could someone maybe give me a bit of a guide just so I do the right thing by them. Thanks guys

    My First Discus

Was a little concerned after the first day as they did not eat. Fed them this morning and one ate and the other two nudged the bloodworm around a bit,so that was a relief. They were happy tho', fins up and showing plenty of colour, not hiding at all and coming to the front of the tank when I approached it.
  25. Have taken the plunge today and bought my first discus. The tank will be a work in progress for a while with more plants and some other fish too I guess. Have seen the white discus in the lfs before and not thought much of them, but this one caught my eye today, so had to bring it home.
