would a 2 ft breeding tank with a third partitioned of for a pair and the other 2 thirds for growout be a suitable setup rather than having multiple smaller tanks?

as the others have said, yep. This is my old killie tank (when i first started with them) its a 2ft divided in 3. Perfect for trios!

...Then i got hooked and needed more, that tank took up too much room etc. The tank is now being used by a mate who has killies in it.
