Daemon
Hi everyone. I am reasonably new to tropical fish but I have managed to sustain a tank full for a couple of years. I would like some help please. I recently changed from a 60 to an octagonal 80 litre tank. During this process I used most of my old water and didnt wash anything. The only things new in my tank are a new sponge in the filter and a new undergravel filter but with the same gravel. I have been told I am over feeding but I give my 30 or so fish only 1 pinch in the morning of flakes. I have a sponge filter and an undergravel filter with 2 risers that are not quite long enough to make it to the surface and I have an ammonia filter on one and a carbon filter on the other. I gravel clean once a fortnight and do a 10% water change every fortnight as well. My water looks permanently cloudy and I think it might have something to do with my biological filtering. I use stress zyme reasonably regularly to help with that but it doesnt seem to be working. Any experts out there with any clues? Perhaps the fact that I recently had either black or glow light tetras(havent matured enough to tell yet) breed in my tank might give someone a clue as I am told they are quite hard to breed. Ira
First of all, don't use the stress zyme. You're just throwing more garbage into the tank. Second you could use a lot more and bigger water changes. With that little tank and as many fish as you have you're probably better off with at least 30% a WEEK. I guess it's not too bad though if you've got some fish breeding.
Daemon
Thanks. So what do you recomend to add into the tank instead of stress zyme. Or do you think the 30% water change will be enough? Cheers for the reply
Ira
The water changes should be enough. If it doesn't, you're at least cutting down on dirty water as a possible cause. You could do a couple big water changes, say 50% every other day and see if that makes a difference. But you'll want to slowly add the new water in when you do that because that'll be quite a big change for your fish if they're used to 10% a fortnight. Daemon
Magic Thanks for the help. I will try to increase the water changes and see how that goes.
Pegasus
Hi Daemon, Welcome to the forum. You might also want to check that you have nothing slowly decomposing or desolving in the tank like rocks, gravel, or ornaments. If any are lime or alkaline based they could fog your water. Test the gravel by adding some vinegar to a small amount in a container. If it fizzles it will give probs. Test other items after removing them. Daemon
Thanks for that. I will try it. I made the an assumption there and thats something I hadnt considered. Good one.

Daemon
Hi there. I have considered it but from descriptions I have had from people who were previously members it sounded like too serious a group for me. I just l;ike my tank to look pretty. Although they do have some great auctions by the sound of it.
Caryl
The Napier group - serious??? I think you have the wrong group  Try it and see for yourself.
Goldie
I agree with Caryl. Having meet some of them at last years' auction
