My angel fish has no fins? Hi I am also new :)

Hi this is the first question I have asked :)

I have 2 angel fish with no fins, these are 8cm angels and they were in with some baby electric yellows (3cm) and some others but i don't think it was them, funny thing is that they had been in with other angels no problem but between me going to work and they were fine and then getting home 9 hours later they were nearly dead (there was two angel's in there one more damaged than the other) I took them out of the tank within seconds of seeing them like that, they lasted the night which took me by surprise but now the worst of the two has a funny white looking fungus hair like thing growing on the parts where the fins were trimed right down to the flesh (3 parts) what do I do? and was this the electric yellows? :(

Also what fish would you recommend that my 10cm black ghost knife should go in with, he is such a beautiful little dude?

Just so everyone knows a little more about me- I have three tanks 1x 100ltr 2x 130ltr and quite a big range of fish which I have had no problem with up until now. I also have some of Ronnie's beautiful Red melon's in one of my tanks I also have neons, albino cory's, clown loaches, bristlenose, 2 large pleco's (one is in with my turtles), mollies, kribs, red tailed sharks, dwalf gourami and fighter's. Mostly two of each of the above but I have got a few more discus which are stunning. I am tring to find Ram's in wellington but have had no luck?? does anyone know where to get them without paying the earth :)

my guess is the yellows, from what ive heard they can be nasty buggers. the white fluff you are seeing is fungus, theres a few meds out there that are good for getting rid of that. are they in a hospital tank with just them or in another tank with other fish? if they are in with other fish i would suggest moving them to their own tank to be treated, that way the healthy fish dont have to be put through the stress of medications. i would imagine the fins might grow back, depends on how far down they have been chewed and what fins. if the actual rays are damaged their might not grow back to well, if it all, might just be a wait and see thing.

good luck and welcome to our forums!

Tammy you should never have had angels and electric yellows in the same tank! Angels like slightly acidic to neutral water pH 6 - 7 whereas electric yellows are African Malawi cichlids which require very alkaline conditions pH 8.

Yea I meant red tailed sharks (must have been dreaming  ) no the red tailed sharks weren't in with them just some mollies, clown loaches, cory's, bristlenose's and kribs.

the electric yellows are only about 3cms long and I have had no problem before with them nipping untill these angels???

I found that the red tailed sharks were too nosey going into where my ghost knife likes to hide so I seperated them, now hes in with a few discus until I can find more suitable tank mates for him!! He seems happy with them though (no nosey little buggars coming to see him  ) and I can tell since I have had him he has got way more friendly, at feeding times hes not shy at all :bounce: not like to start with it had to be completley dark before he would venture out :D And yes for the tank and I'm going to get larger tanks as he gets bigger :hail: ghosty!!!

Thats it so totally what I thought but they don't seem to be bothering each other? (angels did it to each other)

Ghosty was in with them would he have done it? I have never seen him even look at anyother fish? especially that size?

Oh I sure have I will do anything to make him happy :hail: haha

Anyothers that he will be in ok with? so he will be in ok with my yellows and I think possibly I might get a few more I just have to do some study on who will be in ok with each other :-? Are Rams (buterfly cichlids) ok in with them as I really like them and want to get some possibly even just put them in my community tank?

Thanks for all your help :D

i would put your ghost in with your discus, ghosts can be sensitive and discus arent often that boisterous to annoy em. rams can be picky with their water and ive found the quality of them in NZ isnt the best (often die for no reason), but if you get some good stock they would make great tankmates for your discus also.

the neons, large plec, mollies, kribs, shark and possibly the gourami and fighter probably wont fit in with the discus. neons perish at high temps, mollies are sometimes put in but i wouldnt reccomend it, kribs can be mean, sharks can hassle them (but if yours are ok then thats cool), and the gourami and fighter might (i dont know bout these fish) not like the high temps. alot of plecs will latch onto discus (commons are notorious for it apparently) and eat their slime coat, but they can cause some major damage to them also. the cories, clowns and BN will fit in with your discus ok.

i would put some more africans of some sort in with your yellows, perhaps the BN?

this is just my opinon though and what id do if i was in your situation :D

Well pretty much what you have said suit is how I have got them together at the moment so that is great news thanks so much :D

I have got the discus, ghosty, cory's, clown's and bristlenose's in one tank (oh and also 2 kuhli loaches) with them to, and the tank looks great and everone is getting along GREAT!! :P And I am looking to upgrade there tank at the moment too so they will be getting a wonderfull new home haha, :hail: (oh and the neons are with them at the moment too so I will change them around)

I then have the RT sharks, yellows, large pleco, kribs, mollies and one gourami in another tank as yes the mollies and the sharks anoy the other fish :-?

And then In my third tank I have another gourami (as the other had been beating him up :( ) my fighters, and some other fish that I have sold which I am waiting to be picked up like lace gourami, platties, guppies etc

I definately will start looking around to set up a cichlid only tank as they can go into the spare tank once I have got a new one

Thanks Heaps you have been a great help!!!!

Is there any african's you would recommend I have a look at?

How big is the tank you have your discus in? From what I've read here, they require a BIG tank, am I right oh wise fishy people

unless your breeding (in which case two to a tank/divider/whatever) it is reccomended you have at least 5, and you need 40L minimum each, 50-60L is better though if you can manage it. the reason you want a large group is to minimise fighting. my bigger lot which consists of five still have some good fights (normally the two larger who both want to be boss). they will sit their tail slapping, ramming each other and a few times ive heard the 'pop' noise as they peck at each other :o they are in a small BB tank at present though so are always in each others face, hopefully when they move into the 216L they will settle down a wee bit. this is mostly my opinion though based on lots of reading and a little experience
